Previous Challenge Entry (Level 4 – Masters)
Topic: ODD (10/06/22)
TITLE: Talking to Cynthia | Previous Challenge Entry
By Graham Keet

I’m probably clumsier than most ten-year-old girls; some consider me a bit of an odd kid.

I don’t have brothers or sisters, but I have a few friends, and I have Cynthia who is with me at any time of the day or night. She’s with me now, sitting at the end of my bed. Nobody else can see her, but I know she’s there. You ask me what happened to my face, Cynthia? It’s a long story, but this is what I tell others who ask.

It was all my fault—I didn’t see the door was open … and … and I guess I ran straight into it. Yeah, I know I did the same stupid thing a week or so ago, maybe I am a bit odd.

Oh, those noises my friend Wendy in the apartment below heard last night, well, that wasn’t me. I guess I inherited my clumsiness from my Mom—she told Wendy’s mom that she slipped in the bath and hit her face on the edge of the tub … and the bruises on her leg were caused when she hit the floor. I feel very sorry for Mom, but I know she’s used to it by now.

My Dad says Mom and I should listen to him more often. Some days he’s very kind to us, but we must be careful on Friday nights. Mom and I try to be in bed and asleep when he gets home after being with his friends, but then he normally wakes Mom up to fix his food. Two weeks ago Mom was really sick and running a fever, but I guess Dad was so hungry that he made her get out of bed to fix his supper. I think she must have been half asleep and that’s why she slipped on the kitchen floor and hit her head on the side of the fridge. It bled quite a bit and this made Dad angry, because she couldn’t carry on with the food.

My teacher sent me to talk to the school counselor, Mrs. Watson, who seemed very worried about me. I told her everything was fine at home and that my parents love me very much. I’m sure they really do, and that’s why I always try to do what they want me to do—especially my Dad. He works so hard to get money for us and that’s probably why he is often tired and irritable at home, so I try to be nice to him.

The only thing I’m sorry about is that Wendy isn’t allowed to visit me anymore. I’m not quite sure why her parents stopped her, maybe it’s because of my being clumsy so often and bumping my head on things. They said they can hear sounds like someone falling sometimes. Anyway, I see Wendy at school and we sit together at break and chat. Wendy says her parents want to call the police, but I told her they mustn’t do that because it would make my Dad very angry, and Mom gets sad when Dad gets angry.

But Dad is often in a very good mood, especially when Mom is tired and goes to sleep early. Then he comes to my room and we chat about lots of things. We even play a little game together that has no name—it’s just a game. He says this is our secret game and the secret will be lost if I tell anyone; so I’ll only tell you, Cynthia.

I really don’t have much to complain about, especially when I hear what happens to some of the other kids. My Mom takes me to Sunday school whenever she can. It’s a bit far from where we stay and Dad doesn’t let her use the car. So we walk. Miss Jensen, my Sunday school teacher, says I must ask God to help me with anything that worries me. She says God knows all about me and will really help me with anything I ask him. So I do. I think it’s starting to help.

So Cynthia, perhaps in time I won’t have to tell people I’m clumsy so that they stop thinking I’m an odd kid. I pray for this to happen soon.

Best of the Best Interview 2023 - Graham Keet

Shari: First, congratulations again on winning Best of the Best for your entry, "Talking to Cynthia” for the topic Odd. What was your first thought when you found out you had won?

Graham: Firstly, I was pleasantly surprised that my entry was chosen as a Quarterly winner and I didn’t even think of being selected for Best of the Best. It was, therefore, a huge surprise to receive notification of winning the top honor.

Shari: How did you come up with the idea for the story?

Graham: I wrote Talking to Cynthia soon after seeing a TV report of a case where the ‘man’ of the house continually abused his partner and her young daughter. This is a subject I feel very strongly about and I cannot understand how a man can abuse any woman and child in this fashion. Unfortunately, such behavior is all too prevalent in spite of the efforts of various action groups, and even governmental concerns.

Shari: It is truly a tragic thing that happens all too often. Hopefully, your story can reach some hearts, to both heal and convict.
How/when did you first start writing? What is your favorite genre to write?

Graham: I have always enjoyed the challenge of expressing myself in writing. In primary school, I won the prize for an English essay and as a young adult, I had a few short stories printed in local newspapers. While working in my company’s regulatory section my writing was confined to legal documentation which, although challenging, did not permit a free flow of ideas.
After my retirement, I decided to study the book of Revelation, which I had always found difficult to understand. This led to a growing interest in end-time prophecy resulting in my publishing two novels on this subject.

Shari: And now you have won another prize for writing. Most people find Revelation both challenging and fascinating. I did notice that both of your novels are available in eBook form through your FaithWriters' profile. From the excerpts found on FaithWriters, both of your novels sound very interesting.

Do you have a favorite piece you have written, for FaithWriters or elsewhere?

Graham: A few years ago I submitted a Challenge entry called Mr. Fix It. This was a light-hearted piece about two robots falling in love without the one knowing the other was a robot. Sounds a bit like what’s happening today with AI.

Shari: Being a science fiction fan, I had to go check out that entry (as I hadn't read it before). It was a lot of fun. And you're right, it does sound a bit like the direction AI could be headed in the not-so-distant future. Which authors have been your writing inspirations?

Graham: For relaxation, I enjoy reading thrillers—books written by authors like David Baldacci, Jack Higgins, and Lee Child (who wrote the Jack Reacher series). This is probably why my two novels, while being Bible-based, are written as thrillers. In many ways, world events unfolding at the moment read like extracts from an action novel.

Shari: How did you find FaithWriters? How has it helped in your writing journey?

Graham: FaithWriters is like a breath of fresh air. I stumbled across the website some years ago while doing research. I was fascinated that writers were invited to submit articles for others to read and so I submitted my first story (The Vow). Faithwriters Challenge has taught me so much about writing technique that when I read my early entries now I think “how on earth could I have submitted this?”

Shari: Oh I, know that feeling of "How could I have written that?" all too well. There are even some I forgot I wrote. I'd taken a bit of a sabbatical from FaithWriters until I was asked to set up to become the Challenge Coordinator (and ironically, our former Challenge Coordinator, Deb Porter, used the name Breath of Fresh Air on the forums for years and was the name of her publishing company). So, I’d like to get to know you a bit better, as I’m sure would our members. Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

Graham: I am a South African living in Pretoria, which is about 40 miles north of Johannesburg. My wife (Astrid) and I have been married 53 years and we have two sons. Our elder son, Gary, was killed in a light aircraft accident in 2004, while our younger son, Ryan, lives close by. Ryan and his Japanese wife Ayako have six children, three boys and three girls, aged between 4 and 17. As you can guess Astrid and I are kept busy, especially helping with transport between school and sport activities. Ryan worked in Japan for 11 years, where he met and married Ayako, who is a wonderful Christian woman. It brings us much joy to see the grandchildren growing up to honor God and for the older children to be outspoken in their Christian beliefs among their peers.

We belong to the Hatfield Christian Church, which is a charismatic, spirit-filled church. In our younger days, we both taught Sunday School and then went on to hosting a young adults group in our home for 20 years. We used to regularly have 50+ young people on a Thursday evening and were privileged to have been invited to about 40 weddings, where either the boy or the girl, and often both, were in our young adults' group.

Astrid and I have been involved in sport all our lives and we still enjoy long walks, running, and gym. We look forward to experiencing God’s love and His blessing for a long time to come.

Shari: What advice would you give to our other FaithWriters members?

Graham: Firstly, write from your passion. Your excitement and involvement in the subject will be obvious to your readers. It is possible to write a technically sound piece without your personal emotional involvement, but the final product could fail to attract any interest by the readers.

Learn to write clearly and concisely—the weekly Challenge will teach you to cut out all unnecessary wording. When I started I would end up with more than a thousand words and would have to trim down to 750. Nowadays I am usually spot on regarding the word limit, and this conciseness has helped me with writing in general.

Shari: Thank you for your time in letting us get a little peek into your life and writing. Congratulations once again. I look forward to reading more of your work in the future!
We Would Love To Have You Come Back to The Challenge!

Not Your Usual Writing Challenge - Challenging Topics Quarter
Awaken Your Creativity - Fiction and Non-Fiction Entries Encouraged

This quarter, we’re focusing on More Controversial Topics that are in the public square. These are some of the hot topics that are in the news, topics that you might be asked to write on from a Christian perspective for a website or magazine.

Here is an introduction: As Christians, we are called to be in the world by not of the world (“I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” John 17:14). However, we need to be aware of what is going on in the world, the way the world thinks and teaches, and what God’s word teaches us and how we’re to react to the world.

This quarter, we’re going to focus on things that are relevant to believers from the news/current events and how we are to relate to these issues. We are back to single-word topics for this quarter.

Get Notified Automatically of The New Topic: If you have not already, go HERE and sign up for the weekly topic notice on the right-hand side of the page. We will then send you a new topic email each Thursday and you can choose to enter or not.

This should be really challenging and prepare members to spread God's perspective on challenging topics when writing for websites and magazines.

The Good Shepherd - Jennifer Woodley

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.” Psalm 23:1 (NIV)

David wrote these words from his own experience of caring for sheep. He knew that sheep are dependent upon the shepherd for provision, guidance and protection. As the Lord is the Good Shepherd, so we are His sheep; obedient followers, wise enough to follow one who will lead us in the right places and in the right ways.

When we allow God to guide us, we have contentment and His blessing. But how very difficult it is to depend upon the Lord when there are things that we want! Things that are just beyond our reach and can become more important than believing that God is our shepherd, who knows what is best. His promise to provide becomes a fact in our heads rather than a lived-out reality in our lives. We know that our own efforts to run our lives lead to disappointment, and more often than not messy, complicated situations. There is no contentment nor blessing when this happens.

So how do we obey His promise that as a Good Shepherd He will provide, guide and protect? We must discipline our desires and restrain those strong urges to take over and make things happen. We must release control and wait for God to do God-like things in our lives, by trusting His ways and His timetable. And we must purify our motives by aligning every activity and every thought with what we know (and deep down we do know!) God would have us do and think. Our motive must be to bring honour to Him alone!

Our Good Shepherd waits to lavish us with His goodness.

I have been doing this for years, so email me if you want some great ideas on where you can put them: michael@faithwriters.com.

“I’d like to thank you for producing the million-dollar tracts. Because of it, I got saved and I gave my life to Jesus Christ 8 years ago. I used to be an atheist and God brought me to my knees through your million-dollar tract. I went from being an atheist to being on staff at a church, and now I evangelize regularly.” Peter G.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives. Pro 11:30 NIV

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt 6:20 - 21 NIV

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. Luke 12:33 NIV

You can do this for Jesus!

Please bless us by letting us know if you have gotten involved in any of the options.
Increase Sales With an Audio Book
                          or
Make a Nice Income From Home

Recently, I had an email exchange with Dave Walker, a longtime FaithWriters member who grew tremendously in the Writing Challenge. Dave's book, God in the ICU, has done extremely well with almost 2,700 Amazon reviews the last time I looked. He was happily surprised to see a significant increase in sales due to the addition of an audio version. You can view Dave's book and listen to a small audio portion HERE. Dave's book was perfect for an audiobook.

Dave did his own narration, and for some, that works great. But there is an easier way, and it is not that expensive. You can learn about it HERE. ACX is an Amazon company, on their site you can place your book up for narrator auditions. You then get offers from narrators who read a sample for you, posting it on ACX. You choose the one you like and make a deal. This is all done online.

I recently had an audiobook done of Gravity on ACX, by a great narrator and believer named R.F. McCoy. You can hear a sample HERE. If you like R.F. McCoy's voice, make sure to request an audition from him. He was professional, diligent and on schedule. You can find his profile on ACX. It costs nothing to request auditions and you will probably get several. I paid Bob $500.00 and get to keep any profits for myself after Amazon's cut. You can also offer to split profits and pay nothing if a narrator agrees.

When your narration is complete and you have paid the bill, your book is automatically loaded for sale on Audible and other outlets. Everything is professional and that's what you want for your audiobook.

Another thought for some readers is to apply to be a narrator.
ACX will show you how to do this on their site. If you have a good voice, you could make a nice income from home.

Please let us know if you have signed up for this program.

Together We Spread the Gospel On the Net

Not all of us can go around the world as missionaries in person, but we can reach the world online. We can even reach many places missionaries cannot go in person. The world needs sites like FaithWriters, prepared Christian authors and as many Christian articles and books that point to Jesus as possible. The web especially needs your Bible studies, apologetic articles, calls to salvation, nonfiction and fiction articles and books leading people to Jesus. Together we attract lost people from all over the world who need Jesus along with believers who need their minds renewed and encouraged. God has given us a great opportunity to reach many people who may have never heard of Jesus. The image above marks the location of our visitors.

Numerous people from around the world have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. We contact every person who leaves an email address and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country. Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two-minute video from Kimberly on how she found God on the internet

Do This Today!

Do You Always Keep a Copy of Your Articles?
We STRONGLY recommend you do this today and occasionally in the future as you add more articles

We appreciated your patience when FaithWriters was down for over two days a few months ago, due to issues with our service provider. The issue we experienced makes this message of even more importance. We do not want you to lose your articles. Therefore, we have been pushing this for over a year and hope you have already taken advantage of it.  You can download a copy of your articles in mass, with one click on the site. If you post regularly, go back and do this once a month or so to capture your newest submissions.

We back up the site regularly but cannot give you a 100% guarantee of their permanent safety. Things happen online as you know. Hackers are a big issue and some out there would like to take a Christian site down. We have had attacks and issues in the past. Thankfully, we do not keep any of your financial information.

If you log into the site and look in the middle left column of the My Account page under Update and Manage Your Profile/Account, you will see the following link on the website: Click Here to Download a Copy of Your Articles in Mass

When you are logged into the site, click on that link on the website and a copy of your articles will be downloaded to your computer in a zip file. It will be fairly quick depending on your internet speed and number of articles. Save them to your computer or a thumb drive.
While this should download all of your articles, sometimes a couple are missed for some unknown reason. Therefore, double check the downloaded articles by opening each one on your computer. If an important one is missed, you will need to manually copy it to your records from the site. Then going forward, make sure to keep a copy of each new article you post.

KEEP COPIES OF YOUR ARTICLES! Make sure to do this today to protect your writing. Log in HERE.

We can learn and improve our own writing by reading the winners.
While you are there, sow some good seed by leaving a comment.

Another Great Way to Improve The Critique Circle

Fellow Members Need Your Help.

Providing comments and critiques for fellow members is of great encouragement to them. It is also the perfect way to improve your writing skill.

Tips on Giving Critiques

Critiquing the work of others requires balance. Being too nice will not help your fellow writers develop their work; being too harsh can crush a writer’s ego (particularly new writers, who tend to be shy about sharing their work). How can you achieve the right balance? Here are some tips:

Take care to point out both what works, and what doesn’t. If you’re new to critiquing, a good hint would be to point out one thing you like (a phrase, a description, an idea) for each thing that bothered you.

Whenever possible, be specific when pointing out things that you didn’t like (don’t just say “I didn’t like this part” or “I’d cut that,” say “I didn’t like this part because…” or “I’d cut that because…”).

Try to offer suggestions when you think a change is needed. Suggestions, even to the point of an offered rewording, can be very helpful; even if the suggestion isn’t exactly right for the author to use, he or she may get a good idea from it, or at least a better understanding of the point you are trying to make.

Be honest and direct, but in a polite and caring way. Holding back your feelings about a piece because you’re afraid to share your thoughts isn’t going to help anyone. Just be mindful of how you share your opinions!

We Also Need Your Article to Critique!
Members and paid editors provide the critiques in the circle. You can even submit your judged Challenge entries to the circle.

"I have a few, very few, trusted friends who will edit me with a scowl. Most people want you to feel good so they give you compliments about your writing, and these don’t help at all (except emotionally). Really, you need some grouches to edit your work." Philip Yancey in a FaithWriters interview.

This is a real chance to help others and receive some very constructive and private critiques of your writing.

We Always Respond to Emails

If you do not receive a timely response to an email, we did not receive your email, or you did not receive our reply. We are constantly battling overwhelming amounts of spam and sometimes emails we should receive end up in our spam by accident.

You should check your spam and make sure that writer-support@faithwriters.com, feedback@faithwriters.com, bea@faithwriters.com and michael@faithwriters.com are on your email providers approved list.

If you have tried more than once and did not receive a reply, click on a contact link at the bottom of most FaithWriters pages and send us a message telling us of the issue. We will try and email you from another email provider.

Article Comment Emails Not Getting to Your Gmail?

In the past, some members have had issues receiving notification emails when their Challenge or other articles receive a comment. We just did a test of the system and placed a Gmail test address in my profile. I then posted a comment on one of my articles. I also did this test on a Challenge article for a member who said she was not getting the emails. In both tests, the email notification of the comment did come through to the Gmail address, but in both cases it went to the junk file in Gmail. So, FaithWriters automatic email system is working to Gmail but may be going to your junk.

If you have not been receiving notifications of comments on your articles, post a test comment on one of your own articles and then check the junk tab on your Gmail. Be aware, my junk tab in Gmail showed there were no junk emails until I clicked on it and found the comment notification email from FaithWriters in there.  If you find any emails from FaithWriters in your junk, move them to your inbox and hopefully next time they will not go to junk. Make sure to check your junk on a regular basis and click on the other tabs just to check. Each time move them to your inbox. There is also a tab titled "view all email" that should be checked. Sometimes Gmail divides email up into different tabs, so check all the tabs once in awhile just in case. This is something you should check if you have Hotmail or others too.
