TITLE: Fifty Christmas Eves | Previous Challenge Entry

“Come along, GG.” Maddison bubbles with teenage effervescence as she twirls through sheets of lacy snow. “Mom and Gran are waiting in the car.”
I slide into the back seat and smiles and squeezes are exchanged all round.
“So where’re we going?” I ask.
“It’s a couple of hour’s drive.” Sheryl says, “So sit back and relax.”
“You tell me, Maddison.” I can see she’s bursting with excitement.
“Let’s just say it concerns the most awesome Christmas tree for miles around.”
“Is it big?”
“Massive.”
“Close your eyes and rest, Mom.” Sheryl twists from the driver’s seat for a moment. “It’s Christmas Eve. You deserve a break after all the baking.”
Obediently, I close my eyes and try and take a nap. Instead, memories of past Christmas Eves seep into my mind. The year I turned ten, Daddy bought a Christmas tree to plant in the front garden. It was the same size as me and I ran my fingers through its cool green needles. “It’s beautiful!” I exclaimed. Each year, Daddy would measure both of us and of course the tree always won. By the time I was sixteen, it was twice my height.
I was sixteen the last time I saw Jack. He lived next door to us and we were best mates, spending hours boating, fishing and swimming together. He and I always decorated the tree together. He would stand on the ladder and I would pass up silver baubles and strings of gold and red tinsel and then Daddy would come out and help us with the coloured lights.
A familiar pain tweaks my heart. How had we let things go so terribly wrong? My parents were devastated to hear I was pregnant and after weeks of agony and tears, decided to send me to a home for unwed mothers.
I said goodbye to Jack on Christmas Eve, tears streaming as we stood locked in a desperate embrace. Above us, the Christmas tree swayed in the wind and flurries of snow swept against us, numbing our hands and faces. Jack pulled me even closer. “I’ll find you,” he promised. “I’ll find you and the baby and we’ll make a life together. I’ll get a job and look after you.”
I never saw him again although I searched for years. Both sets of parents had moved away, ensuring the break was final and complete. My one blessing was that I got to keep my baby although with harsh conditions attached. My daughter was raised as my sister.
“GG.” Madison is shaking me and I’m surprised to see it’s dark outside. “Come and look.” She helps me out of the car and turns me round to see a towering Christmas tree.
“Oh!” I bring my hands up to my mouth. “It’s beautiful.” The tree is wrapped with strings of gold and red tinsel and silver baubles reflect winking coloured lights. “But it’s in someone’s garden.” A house sits like a grey smudge and windows spill yellow squares of light across snowy lawns. It has a hint of familiarity and I step closer before looking back at the tree.
“I’m home!” I turn to Sheryl. “You brought me home! And look at my tree...how big it’s grown.”
She smiles. “I called the owner of the house. He says you’re welcome to go inside.”
“I can’t do that. It’s Christmas Eve.”
“Yes you can.”
We’re still arguing when the front door opens. “I’m sorry.” I say as a man approaches. “I used to live here but I don’t want to intrude...” My words lose momentum as he stops and looks intently into my face.
“Glenda.”
There’s something familiar about him. His voice, the dimple in his chin and the way his mouth turns up at the corners. Surely not?
“Jack?”
We move forward at the same time. “Your great granddaughter traced me using the internet. I bought this house twenty years ago in the hope that you might come back for old time’s sake.”
Twenty years? Waiting for me? The pain of fifty Christmas Eves slips away like a ghost of Christmas past. I reach out a hand to him. “Do you remember the last time we stood under this tree?”
He nods
“I think we need to make a new memory.”
We stand under the shelter of the branches, coloured lights winking silver, red and yellow as he wraps his arms around me. “To new beginnings.” he whispers, as I lay my head on his shoulder.

“Wait for the Lord, take courage; be stouthearted, wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14 NAB
The centuries-old longing was alive and well when the angel Gabriel arrived on the scene. With her faithful yes, a young Nazarene girl entered the holy echo of calls for the arrival of the long-awaited Messiah. Mary became the vehicle through which God would send Emmanuel, “God with us”. With the Annunciation, she becomes a willing, humble participant in that holy call. The arrival of the Messiah was at hand, but began with another kind of waiting.
How was Mary sustained in her waiting? Mary waited with God, Emmanuel, the God who is with us. Luke 2:19, “And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart,” tells us that Mary also had a contemplative nature. She not only kept the written Word of God in her heart during childhood, but had now chosen to keep Gabriel’s message from God alive in her heart, to sustain her in the waiting season of pregnancy.
Have you been waiting for so long? Don’t just wait. Like Mary, wait with God. Without Him, the waiting is empty. Fear creeps in and doubt plagues us. Impatience dominates. But with God, there is a companion on the journey. Someone to talk to who understands completely. Like Mary, keep His Word in your heart and reflect upon it. Whether it is written in the Bible or spoken to the heart, His every Word sustains us.
Wait with God and His Word; generate strength and endurance within. From this waiting will also spring forth hope. “My soul, be at rest in God alone, from whom comes my hope.” (Psalm 62:6) During this Advent season of waiting, and in all the waiting seasons of life, remember that God is with us, Emmanuel, now and forevermore.

We appreciated your patience when FaithWriters was down for over two days a few months ago, due to issues with our service provider. The issue we experienced makes this message of even more importance. We do not want you to lose your articles. Therefore, we have been pushing this for over a year and hope you have already taken advantage of it. You can download a copy of your articles in mass, with one click on the site.
We back up the site regularly but cannot give you a 100% guarantee of there safety. Things happen online as you know. Hackers are a big issue and some out there would like to take a Christian site down. If you log into the site and look in the middle left column of the My Account page under Update and Manage Your Profile/Account, you will see the following link on the website.

When you are logged into the site, click on that link on the website and a copy of your articles will be downloaded to your computer in a zip file. It will be fairly quick depending on your internet speed and number of articles. Save them to your computer or a thumb drive. While this should download all of your articles, sometimes a couple are missed for some unknown reason. Therefore, double check the downloaded articles by opening each one on your computer. If an important one is missed, you will need to manually copy it to your records from the site. Then going forward, make sure to keep a copy of each new article you post.

To Be Fully Known and Loved is Freedom and Peace
But if anyone loves God, he is known by Him. 1 Cor 8:3 NASWe all long to be known, accepted, and loved. This is authentic love, a love that heals all things and brings us peace, joy, and freedom. This type of love requires that we are known. The following is my adaptation of a quote from Tim Keller. To be loved but not known is superficial.
To be known and not loved is our greatest fear.
But to be fully known and deeply loved is freedom. The more that is known about us, the stronger the bond and deeper the love can be. But we all fear not being loved if everything about us were revealed. This is the part that we are ashamed of, and like Adam and Eve in the garden, we try to make our own covering to conceal these areas. Sadly, even in the best marriages, there are often things that are kept hidden for fear of rejection. The good news is that God knows everything about us and still sent Jesus to die for and save us. Love perfected by the One who fully knows us and deeply loves us. With all revealed, no fear of rejection remains, and an eternity to love Him in return awaits. His perfect love known, believed, and fully embraced has cast out all fear and ushered in His peace, joy, and freedom. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. Not all of us can go around the world as missionaries in person, but we can reach the world online. We can even reach many places missionaries cannot go in person. The world needs sites like FaithWriters, prepared Christian authors and as many Christian articles and books that point to Jesus as possible. The web especially needs your Bible studies, apologetic articles, calls to salvation, nonfiction and fiction articles and books leading people to Jesus. Together we attract lost people from all over the world who need Jesus along with believers who need their minds renewed and encouraged. God has given us a great opportunity to reach many people who may have never heard of Jesus. The image above marks the location of our visitors.
Numerous people from around the world have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. We contact every person who leaves an email address and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country. 1) This first one was from a person who hacked FaithWriters a few years ago. We feared the entire site might be lost. We prayed for our hackers and posted articles letting them know that their salvation was more important than the website. The shutdown of the site stopped and we received this message through our evangelism page. I am certain is was our hacker.

8) Recently had a deputy police chief from a major city accept Jesus on the site. He is responsible for over 1,500 officers and staff and could be a big influence for Jesus. Please pray for J. Ramar.

| | | Article Comment Emails Not Getting to Your Gmail?
In the past, some members have had issues receiving notification emails when their Challenge or other articles receive a comment. We just did a test of the system and placed a Gmail test address in my profile. I then posted a comment
on one of my articles. I also did this test on a Challenge article for a member who said she was not getting the emails. In both tests, the email notification of the comment did come through to the Gmail address, but in both cases it went to the junk file in Gmail. So, FaithWriters automatic email system
is working to Gmail but may be going to your junk.
If you have not been receiving notifications of comments on your articles, post a test comment on one of your own articles and then check the junk tab on your Gmail. Be aware, my junk tab in Gmail showed there were no junk emails until I clicked on it and found the comment notification email from FaithWriters in there. If you find any emails from FaithWriters in your junk, move them to your inbox and hopefully next
time they will not go to junk. Make sure to check your junk on a regular basis and click on the other tabs just to check. Each time move them to your inbox. There is also a tab titled "view all email" that should be checked. Sometimes Gmail divides email up into different tabs, so check all the tabs once in awhile just in case. This is something you should check if you have Hotmail or others too. |

| | Another Great Way to Improve The Critique CircleFellow Members Need Your Help.
Providing comments and critiques for fellow members is of great encouragement to them. It is also the perfect way to improve your writing skill.
Tips on Giving Critiques
Critiquing the work of others requires balance. Being too nice will not help your fellow writers develop their work; being too harsh can crush a writer’s ego (particularly new writers, who tend to be shy about sharing their work). How can you achieve the right balance? Here are some tips:
Take care to point out both what works, and what doesn’t. If you’re new to critiquing, a good hint would be to point out one thing you like (a phrase, a description, an idea) for each thing that bothered you.
Whenever possible, be specific when pointing out things that you didn’t like (don’t just say “I didn’t like this part” or “I’d cut that,” say “I didn’t like this part because…” or “I’d cut that because…”).
Try to offer suggestions when you think a change is needed. Suggestions, even to the point of an offered rewording, can be very helpful; even if the suggestion isn’t exactly right for the author to use, he or she may get a good idea from it, or at least a better understanding of the point you are trying to make.
Be honest and direct, but in a polite and caring way. Holding back your feelings about a piece because you’re afraid to share your thoughts isn’t going to help anyone. Just be mindful of how you share your opinions!

| | | Increase Sales With an Audio Book or Make a Nice Income From HomeRecently, I had an email exchange with Dave Walker, a longtime FaithWriters member who grew tremendously in the Writing Challenge. Dave's book, God in the ICU, has done very well with almost 600 Amazon reviews the last time I looked. He was happily surprised to see a significant increase in sales due to the addition of an audio version. You can view Dave's book and listen to a small audio portion HERE. Dave's book was perfect for an audiobook. Dave did his narration, and for some, that might work out great. But there is an easier way and it is not that expensive. You can learn about it HERE. ACX is an Amazon company, on their site you can place your book up for narrator auditions. You then get offers from narrators who read a sample for you, posting it on ACX. You choose the one you like and make a deal. This is all done online. I recently had an audiobook done of Gravity on ACX, by a great narrator and believer named R.F. McCoy. You can hear a sample HERE. If you like R.F. McCoy's voice, make sure to request an audition from him. He was professional, diligent and on schedule. You can find his profile on ACX. It costs nothing to request auditions and you will probably get several. I paid Bob $500.00 and keep any profits myself after Amazon's cut. You can also offer to split profits and pay nothing if a narrator agrees. When your narration is complete and you have paid the bill, your book is automatically loaded for sale on Audible and other outlets. Everything is professional and that's what you want for your audiobook. Another thought for some readers is to apply to be a narrator. ACX will show you how to do this on their site. If you have a good voice, you could make a nice income from home. |
