TITLE: Risky Trade | Previous Challenge Entry
By Holly Westefeld

Once my pottery and my wife's woolen cloth were inspected by the respective guild masters, I packed them carefully into the oxcart, using the fabric to protect the jugs, pots, and vases. The emperor may have improved on the roads, but the wares would still undergo much jostling. The caravan would be departing at dawn the next day, and would not wait for stragglers. There would not be another guarded caravan before winter, so it was the last opportunity to market our goods at the port, and procure provisions for the next several months. The risk of bandits, not to mention sudden storms precludes solo journeys.

We arose early, my wife preparing a simple breakfast, while I stowed the rest of the supplies needed for me and the oxen. Lastly, I removed the lid from a jar in the corner, removed a cylindrical parcel from it, and slid it into the lining of my cloak.

The day was crisp but fair. We made good time, arriving at the ruins by the crossroads where we would camp well before sunset. The roofs had long since decayed, but some sturdy walls still stood, providing some protection from the wind, and making it easier for the guards to keep watch.

There were no other travelers present, but there were signs that some had been there recently. That meant that I was able to position myself near the end of one particular wall. I hoped it portended that my contact had already been there.

I went through the same routines as the other travelers, eating my dinner, feeding the oxen, and laying out my sleeping mat. I could not allow myself to fall asleep, however, until I checked the hidden alcove in the wall.

The moon was full, but providentially, clouds wafted in, leaving only scant firelight for the guards to keep watch by. Even so, I waited until snores resounded off the walls to slip around the end of the wall. I counted carefully, seven stones from the end, and three from the ground. The oil I had used on the rock was still working beautifully. It slid out without a sound.

I reached my hand inside the wall. Indeed, there was a parcel similar to my own. I exchanged them, then carefully replaced the stone and returned to my sleeping mat.

I was nearly as sluggish in the morning as those who had over indulged in their wine the night before, but I pressed on, knowing that sleeping at the inn that night would be deep and sweet. We arrived at the bazaar by mid morning. Sales were brisk, as both my artisanship and my wife's were well known in the city. The balance of the goods sold before we departed the following afternoon. This time when we arrived at the ruins, I worked my way back toward the corner of the walls, a safer spot with a full purse. Especially since the night sky was cloudless, I resisted the urge to check and see if my parcel had been retrieved. The risk was great enough as it was, and my family would be devastated if I were caught and sent off to be tortured and executed by the emperor.

It started to drizzle the next afternoon, which made the warmth of hearth and home all the sweeter. Embracing my wife, she ran her hand over my cloak, smiling when she felt the parcel tucked in the lining. We stowed the winter's provisions and returned the oxen to the stable, where they munched contentedly.

Word spread quietly that the trade had gone smoothly. Family by family our home filled on the first day of the following week. Their excitement was palpable as I ........

Instantaneous Revulsion – Toni M. Babcock

The brain is amazing in that it can identify and cause the body to react to a perceived threat in a split second. Here’s a recent example: In the woods, I expect to see certain things in certain places — like snakes in the grass, skunks in the forest, and spiders that can walk on water in the pond. None of these observations have a major effect on my psyche. What I don’t expect to find is a shocking appearance in my house, or worse yet, in the sugar and shortening I’ve begun to stir together in a steel mixing bowl. Let me explain.

The other day I decided to bake sugar cookies. First, I measured a cup of shortening and plopped it into a steel bowl I’d retrieved from a lower cabinet next to the kitchen sink. Next, I reached up to an overhead cupboard to retrieve a bag of sugar and measured out a full cup in the bowl. I began to stir the sugar and shortening together. Suddenly as if out of nowhere, NOWHERE, a large black spider began scurrying around in the bowl!

In a nanosecond I dropped the spoon and turned, fleeing out of the kitchen to my husband’s side who was sitting on a chair playing his bass guitar. There I stood, stiff upright with a frozen look of terror while pointing a trembling finger over my shoulder toward the kitchen as if I’d just seen one of those giant murder hornets they found in the Pacific Northwest. After the terrifying spider was removed by my spider-dispatching husband, I rewarded him with a warm batch of homemade sugar cookies.

Now think how much better our lives would be if we responded to every sin like that — if we were instantly repelled when seeing some evil appear out of nowhere and ran to Jesus “Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people, zealous of good works.” (Titus 2:14 KJV)

Do This Today!

Do You Always Keep a Copy of Your Articles?
We STRONGLY recommend you do this today and occasionally in the future as you add more articles

We appreciated your patience when FaithWriters was down for over two days a few months ago, due to issues with our service provider. The issue we experienced makes this message of even more importance. We do not want you to lose your articles. Therefore, we have been pushing this for over a year and hope you have already taken advantage of it.  You can download a copy of your articles in mass, with one click on the site.

We back up the site regularly but cannot give you a 100% guarantee of there safety. Things happen online as you know. Hackers are a big issue and some out there would like to take a Christian site down. If you log into the site and look in the middle left column of the My Account page under Update and Manage Your Profile/Account, you will see the following link on the website.

Click Here to Download a Copy of Your Articles in Mass

When you are logged into the site, click on that link on the website and a copy of your articles will be downloaded to your computer in a zip file. It will be fairly quick depending on your internet speed and number of articles. Save them to your computer or a thumb drive.
While this should download all of your articles, sometimes a couple are missed for some unknown reason. Therefore, double check the downloaded articles by opening each one on your computer. If an important one is missed, you will need to manually copy it to your records from the site. Then going forward, make sure to keep a copy of each new article you post.

Make sure to do this today to protect your writing. Log in HERE.

Christian Ambassadors Have Diplomatic Immunity
Michael Edwards

For sin will have no “dominion” over you, since you are “not under law” but under grace. Rom 6:14 ESV

Virtually all Christians agree we are saved by grace through faith alone. Yet there is a long-standing debate about the meaning of the phrase “not under law” found in many verses. (Rom 3:19, Rom 6:14-15, 1 Cor 9:20-21, Gal 3:23-25, Gal 5:18, Gal 4:5, Gal 4:21, Acts 13:39). Some argue that the law is done away with for Christians while others argue that the law still applies. While many think these two groups will never agree, could it be that the actual truth is right in their midst? I believe the following allegory can help.

The Ambassador

When an ambassador represents their country and its leader in a foreign land, it is a well-known fact that they are NOT under the dominion or authority of the law of the foreign host. The laws of the host country exist as always to protect the population from each other's fallen nature, but ambassadors have diplomatic immunity assigned to them.

“The purpose of these privileges and immunities is not to benefit individuals but to ensure the efficient and effective performance of their official missions on behalf of their governments.” http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/150546.pdf

This undeserved favor is not based on their person and covers the ambassador all the way from jaywalking to murder. It is assigned by their home country solely due to the position they hold. Diplomatic immunity is reciprocal between countries and thus both countries benefit. This immunity means that if they do break the law, they cannot be criminally prosecuted by their host country. No matter what the crime, the worst thing that happens is deportation. This immunity is provided to give the ambassador “safe passage’ so they can perform their mission in the host country.

This truth does not give the ambassador a license to break the law at will. After all, they are entrusted to do a job and represent their home country in the best way possible. If they do act in a deplorable manner and commit heinous crimes in their host country, it hurts and offends the residents of the host country. Thus, reflecting poorly on their home country and its leader who appointed them as ambassador. Transgressing the law in their host country is the complete opposite of how they are supposed to act.

Jesus Kingdom is Not of This World

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world. "John 18:36 ESV

A Christians Diplomatic Immunity

God first forgives and imputes his righteousness (Gen 15:16, Rom 4:5, 9:30) to those who believe God and therefore trust in Jesus. At that point, a Christian is no longer of this world, just in this world. God’s kingdom is now our home.

Like Jesus, Christians are Not of This World

I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. John 17:14,16

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, Phil 3:20 ESV

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, Eph 2:19 ESV

Christians are Ambassadors of God’s Kingdom to This World

Then instead of immediately removing the now saved believer from this fallen world, he appoints believers as ambassadors for his kingdom.

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 2 Cor 5:20 ESV

and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. Eph 6:19-20 ESV

Jesus Prays for and Protects His Ambassadors

Jesus prays to the Father in John 17 that we would stay here to make God the Father and the Son known. He also lovingly prays for our protection from the evil one. As his ambassadors, he prays that we will never again come under any condemnation (John 3:17-18, Rom 8:1). Satan, the ruler of this world (John 14:30), used the law to condemn us.

I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. John 17:15

Satan’s power against mankind came from the law. Sin has no power to condemn those who are not under the law but under grace.

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 1 Cor 15:56 ESV

by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities Col 2:14-15a

God the Father answers Jesus prayer to keep us from the evil one by removing satan’s weapon against us, the law. God forgives us and then places us under grace where sin has no power to condemn us, where sin is not counted against us. In essence, as residents of God’s kingdom, he provides us with diplomatic immunity (grace) from prosecution while we are on our mission to make him known.

Sin is Not Counted Against a Person Who is Under Grace

For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. Rom 6:14 ESV

…sin is not taken into account when there is no law. Rom 5:13 ESV

For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. Rom 4:15 ESV

…For apart from the law, sin lies dead. Rom 7:8b

So, we see the truth in the midst of the long-standing argument about the law.

If the law no longer existed, there would be no need for grace.

So, the fact is, God's law still exists, but Christians have been placed under grace. We have been given diplomatic immunity so we will have “safe passage” in this world to complete our mission as ambassadors for God’s kingdom.

Now just like the ambassadors of this world, this does not mean we should willfully do what the law tells us not to do. We need to remember why we are still here. We have been appointed by God to represent him and his kingdom in a manner that will lead the lost to believe and trust Jesus. If we lie, cheat, steal and offend those who are lost, this will not lead anyone to believe in and trust Jesus. We need to love them and show them the same grace we have been shown, always pointing them to Jesus and his kingdom.

Fishers of Men in Over 230 Countries
Together We Spread the Gospel On the Net

Not all of us can go around the world as missionaries in person, but we can reach the world online. We can even reach many places missionaries cannot go in person. The world needs sites like FaithWriters, prepared Christian authors and as many Christian articles and books that point to Jesus as possible. The web especially needs your Bible studies, apologetic articles, calls to salvation, nonfiction and fiction articles and books leading people to Jesus. Together we attract lost people from all over the world who need Jesus along with believers who need their minds renewed and encouraged. God has given us a great opportunity to reach many people who may have never heard of Jesus. The image above marks the location of our visitors.

Numerous people from around the world have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. We contact every person who leaves an email address and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country. Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two-minute video from Kimberly on how she found God on the internet

A few unedited emails from people who have accepted Jesus on the site.

The shutdown of the site stopped and we received this message through our evangelism page. I am certain is was our hacker.

Another Great Way to Improve The Critique Circle

Fellow Members Need Your Help.

Providing comments and critiques for fellow members is of great encouragement to them. It is also the perfect way to improve your writing skill.

Tips on Giving Critiques

Critiquing the work of others requires balance. Being too nice will not help your fellow writers develop their work; being too harsh can crush a writer’s ego (particularly new writers, who tend to be shy about sharing their work). How can you achieve the right balance? Here are some tips:

Take care to point out both what works, and what doesn’t. If you’re new to critiquing, a good hint would be to point out one thing you like (a phrase, a description, an idea) for each thing that bothered you.

Whenever possible, be specific when pointing out things that you didn’t like (don’t just say “I didn’t like this part” or “I’d cut that,” say “I didn’t like this part because…” or “I’d cut that because…”).

Try to offer suggestions when you think a change is needed. Suggestions, even to the point of an offered rewording, can be very helpful; even if the suggestion isn’t exactly right for the author to use, he or she may get a good idea from it, or at least a better understanding of the point you are trying to make.

Be honest and direct, but in a polite and caring way. Holding back your feelings about a piece because you’re afraid to share your thoughts isn’t going to help anyone. Just be mindful of how you share your opinions!

We Also Need Your Article to Critique!
Members and paid editors provide the critiques in the circle. You can even submit your judged Challenge entries to the circle.

"I have a few, very few, trusted friends who will edit me with a scowl. Most people want you to feel good so they give you compliments about your writing, and these don’t help at all (except emotionally). Really, you need some grouches to edit your work." Philip Yancey in a FaithWriters interview.

This is a real chance to help others and receive some very constructive and private critiques of your writing.

Increase Sales With an Audio Book
                          or
Make a Nice Income From Home

Recently, I had an email exchange with Dave Walker, a longtime FaithWriters member who grew tremendously in the Writing Challenge. Dave's book, God in the ICU, has done very well with almost 600 Amazon reviews the last time I looked. He was happily surprised to see a significant increase in sales due to the addition of an audio version. You can view Dave's book and listen to a small audio portion HERE. Dave's book was perfect for an audiobook.

Dave did his narration, and for some, that might work out great. But there is an easier way and it is not that expensive. You can learn about it HERE. ACX is an Amazon company, on their site you can place your book up for narrator auditions. You then get offers from narrators who read a sample for you, posting it on ACX. You choose the one you like and make a deal. This is all done online.

I recently had an audiobook done of Gravity on ACX, by a great narrator and believer named R.F. McCoy. You can hear a sample HERE. If you like R.F. McCoy's voice, make sure to request an audition from him. He was professional, diligent and on schedule. You can find his profile on ACX. It costs nothing to request auditions and you will probably get several. I paid Bob $500.00 and keep any profits myself after Amazon's cut. You can also offer to split profits and pay nothing if a narrator agrees.

When your narration is complete and you have paid the bill, your book is automatically loaded for sale on Audible and other outlets. Everything is professional and that's what you want for your audiobook.

Another thought for some readers is to apply to be a narrator. ACX will show you how to do this on their site. If you have a good voice, you could make a nice income from home.

Please let us know if you have signed up for this program.

We Always Respond to Emails

If you do not receive a timely response to an email, we did not receive your email, or you did not receive our reply. We are constantly battling overwhelming amounts of spam and sometimes emails we should receive end up in our spam by accident.

You should check your spam and make sure that writer-support@faithwriters.com, feedback@faithwriters.com, bea@faithwriters.com and michael@faithwriters.com are on your email providers approved list.

If you have tried more than once and did not receive a reply, click on a contact link at the bottom of most FaithWriters pages and send us a message telling us of the issue. We will try and email you from another email provider.

Article Comment Emails Not Getting to Your Gmail?

In the past, some members have had issues receiving notification emails when their Challenge or other articles receive a comment. We just did a test of the system and placed a Gmail test address in my profile. I then posted a comment on one of my articles. I also did this test on a Challenge article for a member who said she was not getting the emails. In both tests, the email notification of the comment did come through to the Gmail address, but in both cases it went to the junk file in Gmail. So, FaithWriters automatic email system is working to Gmail but may be going to your junk.

If you have not been receiving notifications of comments on your articles, post a test comment on one of your own articles and then check the junk tab on your Gmail. Be aware, my junk tab in Gmail showed there were no junk emails until I clicked on it and found the comment notification email from FaithWriters in there.  If you find any emails from FaithWriters in your junk, move them to your inbox and hopefully next time they will not go to junk. Make sure to check your junk on a regular basis and click on the other tabs just to check. Each time move them to your inbox. There is also a tab titled "view all email" that should be checked. Sometimes Gmail divides email up into different tabs, so check all the tabs once in awhile just in case. This is something you should check if you have Hotmail or others too.
