Christ is All - Jennifer Woodley

“Christ is all and in all.” Colossians 3:11 (NRSV)

Right now our circumstances may be overwhelming, our life may feel pointless, we may be burdened with sickness, sin or sadness. We are hard pressed on every side, but in Christ we are not defeated. If we will accept His help today, we will have a Leader and a Guide who will meet all our needs. If we will, in faith, believe the words of our dear Jesus, ‘And remember, I am with you always to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20), we will experience His strength and comforting presence right now.

Christ is All. Take these words as our motto. May these words shape our prayers, strengthen our faith, and give us the assurance of His love and access to the Father. May they make us strong for the work He has appointed for us today. Yes, Christ, our Christ, is all that we need. May these words prompt us to abide in His love. May they give us the assurance that He dwells in our heart, so that we may “know the love of Christ that surpasses all understanding” (Ephesians 3:19). Allow these words to rest deeply in our heart so that they fill us with joy, with hope and with an eternal assurance that we are not alone, but loved by Christ beyond our knowing.

Today, Jesus would say to each of His children, ‘Do not worry and do not grow anxious. Rest quietly with me. I know what you need, what lays ahead and I will love you. Trust me as you allow me to be your all.’

Previous Challenge Entry (Level 4 – Masters)
Topic: DEPOSIT (03/11/21)
TITLE: Two Cents Worth | Previous Challenge Entry
By Jack Taylor

It was the perfect day for this adventure. The sun had already sucked the last dewdrop from the withered grass. The last chicken had offered up a small brown egg for breakfast. The twice used tea leaves stained the luke-warm water just enough to give the illusion of something more. And rubbing the dried jasmine between her palms gave Hannah the joy of imagining Eden at its finest.

There was no one to check on and no one who cared enough what she was up to. The two sets of rags draped off the pegs on the wall seemed to quiver in anticipation. One set was designated for the garden if the rain came again. The other for special adventures like this one. She donned the latter and reached for the small leather purse – her sole remaining treasure.

Shading her eyes, the old woman reached for her walking stick, stretched her back and stepped into the furnace that hovered over the landscape. Her goal perched on an impossible summit. From her little hovel, there was nowhere to go but up. The light glinting off the Temple blinded even her feeble eyes.

The breakfast egg had been her sole sustenance over three days and her shaky limbs demanded numerous rest stops along the way. Pilgrims, merchants and curiosity seekers swarmed by her, giving her little notice. A little boy, dragged by his father up the hill, paused to cock his head and wave. Hannah smiled and shared a small wave back. It had been years since her grandchildren had travelled from the north to see her.

By the shadow shrinking into her feet, she reckoned it was noon. Vendors haggled with customers over prices as the hungry bargained for what they would consume. The leather purse in her hand burned for her attention. There were two coins – the smallest change – but the coins might buy bread. Didn’t the children of the Almighty deserve something to sustain them in their worship?

She sluffed off the gurgle in her belly and pressed on another dozen steps before resting. The hills around were barren. The hillside covered in gravestones across the narrow valley would soon be her final resting place. If only there was someone to mourn her passing. She shook off the unfamiliar shroud of self-pity and took another dozen steps. This was a fine city and there was no finer Temple in the land to honor her maker.

A parade of religious zealots, dressed in swishing black robes, chanted in cadence as they swooped by- full of vigour and zeal for their task. It was impossible to miss the wake they left behind as their piety settled like a cloud over the hilltop. The crush of the faithful in their shadows almost knocked her off her feet so she waited for a gap in the flow of humanity.

The scent of the sacrifices pulled her back to the first visits in this place. What a joy it had been as a young girl to ride her father’s shoulders into these sacred grounds. To scan the eager faces from nations all over the known world and to feel a part of something otherworldly. To purchase a lamb, to feel forgiven, to offer up an abundance from all that the Creator had provided.

And now, years after the plague had taken her parents and brothers. Years after her only sister had moved to the Galilee. Years since she had seen anyone she could call family, she still took these steps.
She watched the religious approach the offering boxes and with great fanfare deposit great sacks of wealth. She sheltered in the shade fighting the shame of what she had.

While the faithful lauded the gifts of the robed ones, she slipped up to the boxes and dropped in her two cents. It was all she had but she gave it with a sense of release and gratitude. Her life was now fully in the hands of the Almighty.

She turned away toward the gate and that’s when she saw him. The young teacher surrounded by gawking disciples. The sparkle in his eyes matched the smile on his lips. His nod in her direction felt like the kiss of God on her heart. A strange shiver raced up and down her spine.

She lowered her eyes and shuffled back to the entrance. She had made her deposit in heaven and a strange hope filled her soul.

God's Exclamation Point, The Free Gift of Righteousness!
Michael Edwards
Have you ever had someone say to you, here is a free gift?

Have you ever given a gift and told the person, here is your free gift?

Maybe, you might, if the person from past encounters had a hard time accepting gifts. Your intention would be to make it extremely clear that the gift you were giving them was really a gift, and there was nothing required of them to receive it or keep it. Once they accepted it, it was theirs forever. They did not owe you anything, need to pay you back or give you a gift in return. It was a gift and gifts are always free of charge, or they are not gifts. Gifts are not earned, they are received.

Both words “free” and “gift” say essentially the same thing. There is no charge.

I have written a number of New Covenant Bible studies, and the following verses in Romans 5 tell us how to reign in this life as a believer. They show up a lot in my studies. I think God is trying to make something very clear here, using the term free gift five times in three verses.

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Rom 5:15-17 ESV

Greek is the original language of the New Testament. The Greek word behind “free gift” in these verses is “dórea” and has a short definition in Strong’s Greek 1431: a free gift. I use an online editor to double check my studies before submission and it always wants me to remove the word “free” in front of “gift” for the following reason.

“It appears that free gift is a tautology. Consider changing it. Tautological phrases such as final outcome and past experience express the same information twice. Avoid using repetitive words when writing, especially in formal situations.” Grammarly Editor

Right after the fall of mankind, God told Adam that he would need to earn everything in this life. I think this may be why so many of us have a hard accepting a gift.

By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, Gen 3:19a ESV

Maybe this is why God tells us five times in three verses that His righteousness and our salvation is a free gift. Everything has been done for us. God wants us to enter His rest in the promised land. In the Jews promised land, the homes were built, the vineyards were planted, the wells were dug and God’s promise still stands. We are co-heirs with Christ. Oh, what a free gift! Romans 5:17 tells us we reign in life by embracing the free gift of righteousness and the abundance of grace found only in the one man Jesus Christ. Our righteousness is freely given to us from God. It is His own righteousness and no one can condemn those God has justified.

Note: Some of the translations of these verses in Romans 5 do not add the word “free” and just say gift. But you now know that the Greek word behind the word gift, does mean “free gift”. Maybe the other translations had their online editor correct them before publishing. I am sure mine will be upset with me today for using the term free gift 19 times in this message.

If you have not trusted Jesus for your salvation yet, maybe God is telling you something. Your free gift of forgiveness, His righteousness, salvation, rest and so much more is waiting for you. It is the desire of God’s heart that you accept His free gift and embrace all it has to offer today. Go HERE to trust in Christ.

Support FaithWriters Spread of the Gospel

Fishers of Men in Over 230 Countries
Together We Spread the Gospel On the Net

Not all of us can go around the world as missionaries in person, but we can reach the world online. We can even reach many places missionaries cannot go in person. The world needs sites like FaithWriters, prepared Christian authors and as many Christian articles and books that point to Jesus as possible. The web especially needs your Bible studies, apologetic articles, calls to salvation, nonfiction and fiction articles and books leading people to Jesus. Together we attract lost people from all over the world who need Jesus along with believers who need their minds renewed and encouraged. God has given us a great opportunity to reach many people who may have never heard of Jesus. The image above marks the location of our visitors.

Numerous people from around the world have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. We contact every person who leaves an email address and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country. Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two-minute video from Kimberly on how she found God on the internet

A few unedited emails from people who have accepted Jesus on the site.

1) This first one was from a person who hacked FaithWriters a few years ago. We feared the entire site might be lost. We prayed for our hackers and posted articles letting them know that their salvation was more important than the website. The shutdown of the site stopped and we received this message through our evangelism page. I am certain is was our hacker.

We Always Respond to Emails

If you do not receive a timely response to an email, we did not receive your email, or you did not receive our reply. We are constantly battling overwhelming amounts of spam and sometimes emails we should receive end up in our spam by accident.

You should check your spam and make sure that writer-support@faithwriters.com, feedback@faithwriters.com, bea@faithwriters.com and michael@faithwriters.com are on your email providers approved list.

If you have tried more than once and did not receive a reply, click on a contact link at the bottom of most FaithWriters pages and send us a message telling us of the issue. We will try and email you from another email provider.

Do This Today!

Do You Always Keep a Copy of Your Articles?
We STRONGLY recommend you do this today and occasionally in the future as you add more articles

We appreciated your patience when FaithWriters was down for over two days a few months ago, due to issues with our service provider. The issue we experienced makes this message of even more importance. We do not want you to lose your articles. Therefore, we have been pushing this for over a year and hope you have already taken advantage of it.  You can download a copy of your articles in mass, with one click on the site.

We back up the site regularly but cannot give you a 100% guarantee of there safety. Things happen online as you know. Hackers are a big issue and some out there would like to take a Christian site down. If you log into the site and look in the middle left column of the My Account page under Update and Manage Your Profile/Account, you will see the following link on the website.

Click Here to Download a Copy of Your Articles in Mass

When you are logged into the site, click on that link on the website and a copy of your articles will be downloaded to your computer in a zip file. It will be fairly quick depending on your internet speed and number of articles. Save them to your computer or a thumb drive.
While this should download all of your articles, sometimes a couple are missed for some unknown reason. Therefore, double check the downloaded articles by opening each one on your computer. If an important one is missed, you will need to manually copy it to your records from the site. Then going forward, make sure to keep a copy of each new article you post.

Make sure to do this today to protect your writing. Log in HERE.

Article Comment Emails Not Getting to Your Gmail?

In the past, some members have had issues receiving notification emails when their Challenge or other articles receive a comment. We just did a test of the system and placed a Gmail test address in my profile. I then posted a comment on one of my articles. I also did this test on a Challenge article for a member who said she was not getting the emails. In both tests, the email notification of the comment did come through to the Gmail address, but in both cases it went to the junk file in Gmail. So, FaithWriters automatic email system is working to Gmail but may be going to your junk.

If you have not been receiving notifications of comments on your articles, post a test comment on one of your own articles and then check the junk tab on your Gmail. Be aware, my junk tab in Gmail showed there were no junk emails until I clicked on it and found the comment notification email from FaithWriters in there.  If you find any emails from FaithWriters in your junk, move them to your inbox and hopefully next time they will not go to junk. Make sure to check your junk on a regular basis and click on the other tabs just to check. Each time move them to your inbox. There is also a tab titled "view all email" that should be checked. Sometimes Gmail divides email up into different tabs, so check all the tabs once in awhile just in case. This is something you should check if you have Hotmail or others too.

Another Great Way to Improve The Critique Circle

Fellow Members Need Your Help.

Providing comments and critiques for fellow members is of great encouragement to them. It is also the perfect way to improve your writing skill.

Tips on Giving Critiques

Critiquing the work of others requires balance. Being too nice will not help your fellow writers develop their work; being too harsh can crush a writer’s ego (particularly new writers, who tend to be shy about sharing their work). How can you achieve the right balance? Here are some tips:

Take care to point out both what works, and what doesn’t. If you’re new to critiquing, a good hint would be to point out one thing you like (a phrase, a description, an idea) for each thing that bothered you.

Whenever possible, be specific when pointing out things that you didn’t like (don’t just say “I didn’t like this part” or “I’d cut that,” say “I didn’t like this part because…” or “I’d cut that because…”).

Try to offer suggestions when you think a change is needed. Suggestions, even to the point of an offered rewording, can be very helpful; even if the suggestion isn’t exactly right for the author to use, he or she may get a good idea from it, or at least a better understanding of the point you are trying to make.

Be honest and direct, but in a polite and caring way. Holding back your feelings about a piece because you’re afraid to share your thoughts isn’t going to help anyone. Just be mindful of how you share your opinions!

We Also Need Your Article to Critique!
Members and paid editors provide the critiques in the circle. You can even submit your judged Challenge entries to the circle.

"I have a few, very few, trusted friends who will edit me with a scowl. Most people want you to feel good so they give you compliments about your writing, and these don’t help at all (except emotionally). Really, you need some grouches to edit your work." Philip Yancey in a FaithWriters interview.

This is a real chance to help others and receive some very constructive and private critiques of your writing.

Increase Sales With an Audio Book
                          or
Make a Nice Income From Home

Recently, I had an email exchange with Dave Walker, a longtime FaithWriters member who grew tremendously in the Writing Challenge. Dave's book, God in the ICU, has done very well with almost 600 Amazon reviews the last time I looked. He was happily surprised to see a significant increase in sales due to the addition of an audio version. You can view Dave's book and listen to a small audio portion HERE. Dave's book was perfect for an audiobook.

Dave did his narration, and for some, that might work out great. But there is an easier way and it is not that expensive. You can learn about it HERE. ACX is an Amazon company, on their site you can place your book up for narrator auditions. You then get offers from narrators who read a sample for you, posting it on ACX. You choose the one you like and make a deal. This is all done online.

I recently had an audiobook done of Gravity on ACX, by a great narrator and believer named R.F. McCoy. You can hear a sample HERE. If you like R.F. McCoy's voice, make sure to request an audition from him. He was professional, diligent and on schedule. You can find his profile on ACX. It costs nothing to request auditions and you will probably get several. I paid Bob $500.00 and keep any profits myself after Amazon's cut. You can also offer to split profits and pay nothing if a narrator agrees.

When your narration is complete and you have paid the bill, your book is automatically loaded for sale on Audible and other outlets. Everything is professional and that's what you want for your audiobook.

Another thought for some readers is to apply to be a narrator. ACX will show you how to do this on their site. If you have a good voice, you could make a nice income from home.
