Subject: Supporting Seniors this Holiday Season

The Bridge houses 1,385 New Yorkers with serious mental illness, nearly one-third of whom are over 55 years old.

These Bridge residents contend with the long-term effects of serious mental illness, a condition that accelerates physical aging and carries stigma that can make it difficult to find social support. Many community resources like senior centers are closed to people with mental illness, increasing their risk of isolation.

Our innovative Aging Services program seeks to enable seniors to “age in place”—to remain safely in their homes and communities, avoiding unnecessary placements in institutional care.

Besides clinical interventions, Aging Services staff provide support, guidance, and encouragement to clients who are often aging with few personal relationships. This year, we added a care provider to support clients through the challenging decisions of end-of-life planning.

As we enter the holiday season and prepare for 2019, we invite you to help us bring health, hope, and opportunity to the vulnerable New Yorkers our Aging Services staff helps live with independence and dignity.

Your support is vital to our work. On behalf of all of us at The Bridge, thank you.
