Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) in Germany: What Freelancers and Businesses Need to Know*

Starting June 28, 2025, the BFSG (Barrier-Free Accessibility Act) sets new rules to make digital products and services accessible to people with disabilities in Germany.

What’s affected?

  • Products: Digital devices (computers, smartphones), self-service terminals (ATMs, ticket machines), consumer electronics (smart TVs, routers).

  • Services: E-commerce sites, mobile apps, online booking systems, telecommunication, and banking services.

Who’s exempt?

  • Micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees and under €2 million turnover are usually exempt if they offer only services.

  • However, if they produce or sell physical/digital products, they must comply.

  • Exemptions can also apply if compliance causes disproportionate burdens—this must be reported..

Transition period:

Some sectors have up to 15 years to fully comply.
