I Was Built for This!
Do it scared. Move anyway.
There are moments in life when everything around you suggests you should panic.
The room gets smaller.
The options feel fewer.
The pressure gets louder.
And still, somewhere inside you, there is a voice saying:
This is not where my story ends.
I've had to remind myself of that lately.
Not because I feel fearless.
Because I don't.
I've had moments where I've questioned the road, the timing, the opportunities, and even myself. Moments where what I thought would happen didn't happen. Doors I expected to open stayed closed. Plans changed. Certainty got replaced by questions.
And if I'm being truthful, there have been moments when fear got loud.
But underneath that fear, I've been hearing something stronger:
You've been here before.
Maybe not in this exact circumstance.
But I've been stretched before.
I've been uncertain before.
I've had to figure things out before.
I've walked into rooms without knowing how the story would end and somehow found my way through.
I've experienced disappointment and kept moving.
I've had plans fall apart and built new ones.
I've been told no and eventually found another yes.
I've had to reinvent without losing myself.
So at some point, I had to stop asking:
"What if I fail?"
And start asking:
"What if I'm built for this?"
That's why Yasiin Bey's "UMI Says" has been sitting differently with me lately.
I've known that song for more than two decades. The music hasn't changed.
I have.
And I'm hearing something in it now that I probably couldn't fully appreciate when I first heard it.
Life is happening right now.
Not when everything lines up.
Not when the fear disappears.
Not when the money is right.
Not when somebody finally chooses you.
Not when you feel completely prepared.
Right now.
We spend so much time negotiating with tomorrow.
I'll start tomorrow.
I'll apply tomorrow.
I'll make the call tomorrow.
I'll take care of myself tomorrow.
I'll pursue the dream when I'm more prepared.
I'll tell them how I feel later.
I'll take the chance when I'm less afraid.
But tomorrow isn't something we own.
It's a possibility.
This moment is what we have.
And I've had to remind myself:
Do it scared.
Courage was never the absence of fear.
Sometimes courage is simply refusing to let fear make the decision.
I think we underestimate how much evidence we already have that we can survive difficult things.
Look at your own life.
You've made it through days you thought would break you.
You've recovered from losses you couldn't imagine carrying.
You've figured things out without instructions.
You've started over.
You've been rejected.
You've been underestimated.
You've cried.
You've doubted.
You've questioned whether you had anything left.
And you're still here.
That doesn't guarantee the next chapter will be easy.
But it should remind you of something:
You have receipts.
Your life has already provided evidence that you are stronger, more resourceful, more resilient, and more capable than fear wants you to remember.
Sometimes I think life feels like that scene in a movie where the hero is trapped in the basement.
Everything looks bad.
The door is locked.
The odds aren't good.
The audience is sitting there thinking:
"How in the world are they getting out of this?"
But here's the difference between the hero and everybody watching:
The hero isn't studying the credits.
They're looking for the window.
The loose board.
The phone.
The weak spot in the door.
Anything.
They're looking for the next move.
That's where I think some of us are right now.
We've spent enough time narrating the danger.
Maybe it's time to start looking for the exit.
You don't have to know the entire plan.
You don't need to see five years from now.
You don't even need to know exactly how this chapter ends.
You need the courage to make the next move.
Send the email.
Submit the application.
Make the phone call.
Start the business.
Have the conversation.
Take the walk.
Ask for help.
Say you're sorry.
Tell somebody you love them.
Put the idea into the world.
Try.
Because lately, I'm becoming less afraid of failing and much more afraid of never finding out what might have happened if I tried.
Failure can teach me.
Failure can redirect me.
Failure can humble me.
Failure can reveal another route.
But regret?
Regret can only tell me what might have been.
And I don't want to build a life around "what if."
So I'm reminding myself:
I was built for this.
Not because I have every answer.
Not because I know exactly what's coming.
And certainly not because I'm never afraid.
I'm built for this because everything I've survived has prepared me to meet this moment.
And my faith tells me the story isn't finished.
There have been moments lately when I wanted to settle.
Take the easier road.
Grab the low-hanging fruit.
Convince myself that smaller might be safer.
And every time I start negotiating myself downward, I feel that same tap on my shoulder:
Nah. Bigger.
Bigger doesn't always mean more money.
Sometimes bigger means more courage.
More discipline.
More patience.
More faith.
More sacrifice.
More willingness to become uncomfortable long enough to become who the next chapter requires.
That's the part nobody puts on the motivational poster.
Growth can be uncomfortable.
Faith can be uncomfortable.
Becoming can be uncomfortable.
Sometimes you have to be willing to stand in the uncertainty without allowing uncertainty to define you.
You have to be able to say:
I'm scared.
I don't know exactly how this works out.
I don't have all the answers.
And I'm moving anyway.
Because there is no perfect tomorrow waiting for us to finally become courageous.
There is right now.
So my people, keep fighting.
Not each other.
Fight for the life inside of you that's still trying to come out.
Fight the voice telling you it's too late.
Fight the comfort that's making you smaller.
Fight the comparison convincing you everybody else is ahead.
Fight the disappointment trying to convince you that one closed door means the hallway is empty.
Fight the fear that keeps whispering:
"What if it doesn't work?"
And every once in a while, answer it:
"But what if it does?"
I'm going to keep fighting.
Keep building.
Keep applying.
Keep creating.
Keep loving.
Keep believing.
Keep shining.
I don't believe I'm at the end.
I believe I'm in the scene that reveals what I'm made of.
And when fear shows up—and it will—
I'm not waiting for it to leave.
I'm taking it with me.
Do it scared.
Move anyway.
Your moment isn't tomorrow.
Your moment is right now
