The conflict that raged within Jesus at the garden of Gethsemane was a struggle only a God-man could endure and overcome. The agony He experienced there was far more intense than any dread He might have felt over the humiliation He would face, the beatings He would endure or the atrocities of crucifixion. He sweat drops of blood over the consequences of taking upon Himself the thoroughly diabolical weight of sin. Jesus knew what He was doing and why He was doing it and made the choice to be the Lamb of God.
The incredible account of Jesus taking upon His sacred shoulders the vast evil that ruined and perverted the entire human race should cause us to gaze in awe at the Christ of the cross. The fact that we are not awestruck over The Radical Jesus and what He accomplished for us at Calvary proves just how spiritually deaf, dumb and blind we are. Everything about the atonement is radical! When we mortals sincerely strive to understand this truth, we will come to adore our Precious Savior with passionate devotion. Words fail to adequately describe what Jesus did on Calvary because our finite minds cannot fathom the immensity of the work. For Jesus to take upon Himself the sins of the world and become the Paschal Lamb is knowledge worth selling everything to obtain.
As the Son hung on that Cross, He took upon Himself the entire guilt of mankind’s sin. At that moment the Son, who became sin for us, faced the full fury of the Father’s just wrath. Only God could withstand the wrath of God. For a short space of time the triune God experienced the incalculable agony of separation within the godhead. We could never comprehend the immeasurable implications and expressions of this divine act of love for mankind. Such wonders are beyond the moral or intellectual capacity of men to comprehend. This is truly radical!
The worst curse of hell is not fire, it is separation from God; yet this is the agony Christ experienced on the cross. By taking our sin upon Himself, Jesus received the judgment we so justly deserved. He suffered hell so that no one who would ever place their faith in Him would have to taste its eternal horrors. Oh, what love divine! That God would pay such a price for wretched souls like us is truly Good News!
All of heaven must have gazed in horror as they watched their God expire upon the cross. When He rose from the grave heaven rang with new songs of exuberant joy! The victorious Christ had conquered sin, death and hell! From that moment, the power of Christ’s resurrection was available to transform sin-laden humanity so they could be born again into His radical kingdom and enter into intimate fellowship with an infinitely holy God.
