In view of the rising number of Covid-19 cases since the second wave of infection was confirmed a couple of weeks ago and the slightly increasing number of hospitalizations linked to the pandemic, the government of Mauritius has decided to extend the lockdown until 30 April 2021. New cases are promptly being identified through an efficient contact tracing exercise and patients who have tested positive to the Covid-19 virus are being placed in quarantine. In addition, the government has rolled out mass testing targeted at people living in “Red Zones”, a term coined for areas in which the virus has proliferated. Moreover, the Covid-19 vaccination campaign is maintained and the government has set the objective of immunizing at least 60% of the population at the earliest in a bid to achieve herd immunity. However, the resumption of certain activities will be allowed as from 1 April 2021 and these will include the following: Banks will be open to the public Bakeries, meat and poultry shops Commercial centres and shops Hairdressers Construction Domestic employees
The following general rules will have to be observed by members of the public: No public gathering will be allowed Sanitary measures to be observed in public places (use of sanitizers, wearing of masks, social distancing etc.) Only holders of Work Access Permits (WAP) will be allowed to travel to their place of work. Those residing in the Red Zones will need a special WAP Shopping will only be allowed on a predefined alphabetical order Old-aged persons are strongly advised to stay at home Minors are not allowed to go out Only civil marriages will be allowed (no public gathering) Funerals can only be held with prior approval from the police force
Contravention of the above rules will entail fines.
