ITL at the 3rd Africa Congress of Accountants
(ACOA 2015)
Intercontinental Trust Ltd was one of the proud sponsors of the ACOA 2015 which was held in Mauritius from the 11th to 14th May 2015 at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre. The event, organized by the Pan African Federation of Accountants in conjunction with the Mauritius Institute of Professional Accountants, regrouped nearly 900 delegates from over 39 accounting bodies scattered over 40 countries.
The ACOA is a biennial event and is considered to be the premier accounting event on the African continent. It provided the ideal platform for accounting and finance professionals to share their expertise and discuss about the many challenges being encountered by the accountancy profession all over Africa.
Our CEO, Ben Lim, was one of the main speakers in a panel session chaired by Pierre Dinan, a renowned local economist, and which reflected on “Mauritius as an international financial centre and a financial hub to Africa”. Ben outlined the confluence of factors that have propelled Mauritius into becoming a recognised financial services centre for Africa. He also provided an insight on the Mauritian economy, its demographics and the recent major developments in its finance, technology and infrastructure sectors. Sunil Benimadhu, the CEO of the Stock Exchange of Mauritius, figured among the other panelists and he spoke about the competitiveness of the Mauritius exchange as a platform for listing and capital raising. The two other panelists of this particular session were Daniel Ng, Head of Corporate Banking and Transactional Products and Services at Standard Bank Mauritius and Luc Merven, the General Manager of the Shoprite Holdings Group in Mauritius. While Daniel elaborated about the sophistication of the banking platform in Mauritius, Luc briefed the audience about the Shoprite group’s experience of using Mauritius as a platform to invest in Africa.
There were several other interesting sessions all throughout the conference and speakers debated and brainstormed about the multiple facets of the accountancy industry; a few of the main topics covered included the enhancement of private-public partnerships, adaptation to technological advancements, taxation and its impact on development in Africa and the role of private equity in promoting all sizes of business in the continent.

As a Gold sponsor of the conference, Intercontinental Trust Ltd would like to thank all the speakers and delegates who contributed into making ACOA 2015 a grand success.
