Cosplay has roots in masquerade balls 🎭 of the 15th century and the fancy-dress parties of the 19th century. The first International Cosplay Day was organised in 2010 by Jennifer Alice to connect cosplayers worldwide 🌍. Today, cosplay is celebrated everywhere; from small community gatherings 🏘️ to giant conventions like Comic-Con in San Diego 🎬 and Japan Expo in Paris. Some cosplayers spend hundreds of hours ⏳ handcrafting their costumes, while others creatively repurpose household items 🪡🧵. Cosplay has become so influential that there are professional cosplayers who earn a living through sponsorships, events, and social media 💼📸. Many cosplayers also practise acting and voice work to fully embody their chosen characters 🎤. In Japan, cosplay cafés ☕🎌 are popular spots where staff dress as anime or game characters to entertain guests.
