Friendly Water Dedicates Seven Rainwater Catchment Tanks in January to Start the New Year!

Seven 25,000 Liter Rainwater Catchment Tanks were dedicated and handed over to several institutions within the Kambiri, Kenya community in January. These tanks can hold 175,000 Liters of water combined at any given time. The dedication ceremony was attended by the area Chief, Assistant Chiefs, clergy, teachers, students, and parents. During the dedication each speaker expressed how this project has really helped their children, especially the girls, remain in class throughout the school day rather than being sent to retrieve water. “My child now loves going to school because there is plenty of water and no more being sent to the river to fetch water," said one of the parents.

Just two short years ago, it would take anywhere from 4 - 6 months to complete a Rainwater Catchment Tank (RCT) project. The process includes site preparation, tank building, tank curing, guttering, painting, obtaining signage, and finally, holding a dedication. Today, with improved processes and efficiency, we are taking RCT projects from groundbreaking to dedication in just 4 - 6 WEEKS!

Magale Secondary School Sees Increased Enrollment After Adding Rainwater Catchment Tanks

Magale Secondary School is a public school located in Kakamega county, Kakamega east district, Kenya. They recently improved campus infrastructure by bringing access to clean water through the addition of three Rainwater Catchment Tanks (RCTs), totaling 75,000 Liters of water. This has led to a significant increase in the enrollment of form one students from 160 to 200 children. Their school principal told us ”This is the highest enrollment in the history of Magale Secondary School and we attribute this to the good partnership we have with Friendly Water for the World together with Kambiri Community Development Group."

Abigael Shimoli
Matsakha Village

Kenya

"My name is Abigael Shimoli from Matsakha village. I am 11 years old and in grade five. I was born in a family of two children and raised by single dad. My elder brother passed on just after clearing his final primary education, which really saddened me. Our dad had struggled with him in school, hoping that he would earn money and lift our family.

We were living in a small room together with our grandmother. After my brother’s demise, things changed through the help of Matsakha Development Group (MDG) and they built two houses, one for my dad and one for my grandmother. That’s not all. They visited me in school and gifted me with new uniforms, books, and enrolled me to school lunch program by paying for what is needed for me to be included in the program. My whole year school fees were cleared as well.

I want to promise improvement in my academics as I will not be sent home for fees and other requirements, and I will be comfortable in class as I have a new and clean uniform on me. Thank you, Matsakha Development Group, for changing my life."

Permagardens are one of Friendly Water's

"7 Technologies."

But what IS a permagarden?

Many households struggle to produce sufficient food due to lack of access to water and fertilizers, poor soil fertility, climate change, and poverty. Permagaden technology addresses these challenges by utilizing the natural system for production and creating a highly productive garden using a small piece of land.

Permagardening is an approach to home gardens that improves soil fertility by use of organic manure and water management to produce nutritious crops. Water is channeled into berms that flow to different beds. This water storage technology allows crops to grow in the dry season. Soil is "double dug" down to 60 cm and is amended with composted manure and vegetation. These amendments improve the soil quality, and no commercial fertilizer is added.

Permagarding provides consistent, high-quality food for families, with a higher yield than traditional kitchen gardens. With the presence of Rainwater Catchment Tanks, permagardens are able to grow year-round. Families are empowered by producing their own food, and by not being reliant on foreign fertilizer or foods being sold at market.
