My Octopus Teacher

This 2021 Oscar Winner for Best Documentary, directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed, documents a year spent by filmmaker Craig Foster forging a relationship with a wild common octopus in a South African kelp forest. The two form a bond where the octopus allows Foster into her world to see how she sleeps, lives, and eats. The filmmaker describes the effect of this mentorship-like relationship the octopus provided him, teaching him a lesson on the fragility of life and humanity's connection with nature. More...
Short Cut Film Festival

The Westport Library is delighted to welcome the Short Cuts Film Festival 2021 to the Trefz Forum (and online). Now in its 11th year, these curated films come from the Tribeca Film Festival in New York and other prestigious festivals. The first of three programs takes place this Thursday and includes: "The Fantastical Girl with the Thermal Gun," (Winner, Best Narrative Short;) the animated and poignant "Death and the Lady," and "Two Jacked," a film with a twist. Co-directors of Death and the Lady, Geoff Bailey and Lucy Steuve, will be special SHORT CUTS guests, joining in the talkback with producer Nancy Diamond. More...

The Great Wilton Pumpkin Fest

The grounds of the Wilton Historical Society will be strewn with pumpkins, gourds, mums and corn as you find a bountiful harvest of fall fun. Watch a blacksmith hard at work at the forge; see docents in Colonial dress hearth cooking with pumpkins, weaving and flax breaking, munch a donut and sip some cider. Lots of things for kids to do – pumpkin decorating, lawn games such as “Ring Toss with Pumpkins” and “Corn Hole” While you’re at the festival, be sure to register and pick up your kit for The ‘History is Here’ Wilton Scavenger Hunt. Then, set out to follow the clues to a dozen places around town, put stickers on your map to mark the places you have found and then stop back at the Historical Society from 3-4 pm on October 23 for doughnuts and cider to celebrate all you have learned and see if you’ve won a prize.
