WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Liang-Fang Chang is part of the adjunct music faculty at Western Connecticut State University and CT State Community College at Naugatuck Valley and the Director of Music at Saugatuck Congregational Church in Westport. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree with the highest honors from the Fu-Jen University in Taiwan and her Master of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music. She received her Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Iowa, where she won a highly competitive fellowship, and also recorded many contemporary works for UI’s prestigious Center for New Music 40th Anniversary CD. In addition to being a renowned solo pianist, Liang-Fang has extensive experience as a chamber musician. WEBSITE

Brett Masterson is an abstract artist, musician, acrylic and spray painting enthusiast, upcycler, creator, muralist, clothing designer, art and music lover as well as the owner of freshacrylics.com He expresses his work in a surrealistic style - creating imagery and dream-like artwork. His work is improvisational and unites conscious and subconscious realms of experience and imagination. His works include spray paint, acrylics and marker on canvas, instruments, walls and furniture. In addition to painting, he composes and performs live music. Armed with a loop pedal, Brett layers guitar, piano, harmonic, lyrics, and a variety of percussion instruments to compose "in the moment" music. WEBSITE

Janice Mauro is a fellow member of the National Sculpture Society, a Silvermine Guild Member, and sculpture member of the Artists Collective of Westport. She has been an instructor in the arts for many years, and attended various residency programs. Her award-winning sculpture has been shown nationally and internationally, and also included in several permanent collections. She has created works featured in various notable Broadway Productions, such as The Lion King. She began her career as a studio assistant for Richard McDermott Miller, a renowned figurative sculptor based in New York City. Currently, she works from her wooded home studio in Connecticut, which serves as inspiration for her creations. WEBSITE

AUGUST SPOTLIGHT ON ARTS & CULTURE: HIGHLIGHTS FROM SIX YEARS OF INTERVIEWS

David Green sits behind the WPKN microphone one last time to share clips from some of his favorite Spotlight broadcasts over the years. Sitting with David is Erika Wesley, the incoming CAFC executive director, commenting on David's selections. Melissa Benedek has two pieces in the Ridgefield Guild of Artists’ 46 Annual Juried Exhibition Urban Poetry (48 X 48) and Falling Into Place (48 X 48) can be viewed at RGOA through October 15th. WEBSITE

Janine Brown will be showing 𝙉𝙤𝙬: 𝘼𝙨 𝙖 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙖𝙘𝙩 which builds on the evolving nature of "the now" as it pertains to the present and reminds viewers of the impossibility of a finite definition of Contemporary Art. She will be showing new homemade biorubber work alongside a wonderful group of twelve other artists at Pen + Brush in NYC. She will also be showing work from her Faded Memories Series in the Masters Exhibiting Member-Only Small Group Show – All Media. The photo transfers document the Iowa farm where she grew up after the deaths of her father (1975), mother (2008), and brother (2022). WEBSITE

Eugenie Deserio's painting, Tornado (acrylic on canvas, 36 x 36”) was selected for the 2023 Annual Member Show at Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan. This kickoff to the season, celebrates the range, interests and talents of members working across all styles and media and is on view through Oct 12th. WEBSITE

Carol Dixon has three of her oil paintings on view at the Sorokin Gallery, 96 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich: Sea of Cortez, Oil & Spray Paint on Canvas, 36” square; Katonah Meadow, Oil on Canvas, 40” square; Mediterranean Sea, Oil on Canvas, 40” square. WEBSITE

Katherine Evans has two paintings at Silvermine’s 73rd A- ONE (Art of the Northeast) national juried exhibition opening Saturday, September 16, 6-8PM. She thanks Madeline Cornell, Gallery Director, Winston Wächter Fine Art, NYC for selecting these two paintings to be in the show: Deep Dive III, 72”x 60” and Buddha’s Gate IX, 36”x36.” WEBSITE

Joanie Landau has two pieces juried into the Ridgefield Guild of Artists’ 46 Annual Juried Exhibition, taking place September 16 through October 15. FB’s Irises Photomontage Blue Story and Iris Solo B+W were selected by Juror Carey Mack Weber, Executive Director of Fairfield University Art Museum. The Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony takes place on September 23, 4-6 PM. Also, her piece, Justice and Equality was chosen for the Carriage Barn Annual Member Show, which runs through October 12th. WEBSITE

Barbara Loss was honored to participate in a film documentary project by Ricardo Bacalao called "I Never Left" about Cuban women artists from New York. WEBSITE

Justin Perlman has his large scale sculpture Winter displayed on the campus of University of St. Joseph in West Hartford. The exhibition was created as a companion to the ongoing outdoor sculpture exhibition on the campus. Justin has contributed work for this gallery exhibition meant to examine the artistic process by the participating sculptors, through small works, prints, and drawings by the featured artists. Margaret Esme Simon will be featured in two shows: The Greenwich Pen Women Art Show in the Beaux Arts Gallery of the Round Hill Community Church in Greenwich. There will be a reception on Sunday, September 17, 4:00 - 6:00pm.; and The Masters Show at the Rowayton Arts Center, a 10 person show selected from Exhibiting Members at the Rowayton Arts Center. She will have 7 pastel portraits in the show. The opening reception will be on Friday, Sept 15, from 6-8:00pm, and the show will be on view through Oct 7th. WEBSITE

Emily Teall is moving into a new studio at the Silvermine Arts Center. She looks forward to welcoming visitors to her new studio by the beginning of October. She is also proudly participating in a couple of new shows. Redeeming Lot's Wife is included at the Loft Artists Association Juried Show, where it won 3rd Place. The show is juried by Kimberly Hendrickson and will be on view through October 8th. Pareidolia ("I'll Hug You Tighter") will be included in the Stamford Art Association's show, Connecting Nature and People, at the Ferguson Library from Oct 3, 2023 - Jan 18, 2024 with an opening reception on Oct 3, 6-7:30pm. Juliette Tehrani will be exhibiting a selection of her abstracted nature series at the All is Abstract group show at the GR Art Gallery in Stamford. WEBSITE

Sherri Wolfgang is grateful and honored to be exhibiting at The New York Figurative Exhibit through September 29th at the Salmaugundi Club in NYC. This showcase of exceptional contemporary figurative art is an overview of representational art that focuses on the human figure and face, as seen in the context of New York City and contemporary life. EMERGING CREATIVE AWARD

Nominate someone who is a breakthrough creative leader starting to blossom as an impactful and innovative contributor to the CT arts scene. The candidate needs to exhibit commitment and promise in being a leader in the arts community; be a creative engine behind new projects and initiatives; have a vision for creative life in CT. If you know a special someone who fits this description, take a moment to nominate this individual. Self-nominations will be accepted.

ARTIST RESPOND PROGRAM

Deadline - October 25


The Artists Respond grant program awards funds to CT artists for community-based art projects. Artists may apply for a grant of $3,000 to support artist fees and project related expenses. Artists may partner with organizations (nonprofits, business, etc), but the project may not be an extension of the organization's work.The Artists Respond program will invest in wide range of community-based projects from large audience events to small group activities.

BRUCE MUSEUM ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

The Bruce Museum is accepting applications for their inaugural Artist-in-Residency program through the support of the Art Bridges Foundation. They will host one Artist-in-Residence for a period of nine months, from Nov 1, 2023 to July 31, 2024. This residency includes an educational component, through which they encourage the Artist-in-Residence to facilitate discourse between the exhibition, their practice, and Museum visitors.
