Fairfield County CT

June 2023

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Cynthia Fazekas / Nimbleleaf Art is a lifelong visual artist working primarily in two-dimensional media. Her work draws on the wildness of the natural world and how connecting to it can invoke peace, wonder, renewal, and perhaps something otherworldly. Through her work, she seeks to draw the audience into moments of awe and oneness and share her most sacred and restorative spaces through landscapes, both real and imaginary, with forms that can lean literal or more simplified yet expressive.

MEMBER NEWS

Melissa Benedek was asked by a curator to be in a group show at the Norwalk Art Space on June 16th for the show “If You’re ____ & You Know It: Identifying Emotions” running through September 7, 2023. She will also participate in an Artist Talk along with the exhibit. Melissa was also in a group show at RPAC Gallery - “Quiet Moments,” which ran through June 14th.

Nancy Breakstone’s photograph “After Hours” (digital, 18” x 18”) is showing in the Carriage Barn Arts Center “The Flower Show” along with four of her other photographs. The show runs through July 8th.

Miggs Burroughs' animated gif simulating the 16” x 16” lenticular image he created of the Langners was unveiled at the Westport Country Playhouse last month. In the summer of 1964, while studying theater at Carnegie Institute (now Carnegie Mellon), Miggs apprenticed at WCP, painting sets during the day, ushering at night, and doing errands for the Broadway and movie stars. On his first day on the job, famed Playhouse manager Jim MacKenzie gave him a grand tour of all the nooks and crannies in the theater, ending in a dimly lit backstage area, in front of a door, which he opened, beckoning him to follow him inside. It was a tiny and disgusting little bathroom. Miggs froze for a second as he watched his life flash before him, until he was handed a plunger and said “welcome to show business."

Chloe Castro of Sage Art Conservation has recently completed the conservation treatment of a working table lamp from Rick’s Cafe from the classic film Casablanca. Almost a third of the individual beaded fringe strands were missing, requiring careful examination and planning to recreate the original vintage beaded design, and the fraying silk ribbon that had been the support for the beaded fringe was reinforced. The pattern in the beads is visible once again and it’s looking better than before. The client had thoughtfully retained a number of fallen beads before it had come into the studio for repair, which was immensely helpful, but that left more than 700 beads to source, amend, and then re-string. The "after" image is shown here. If you have any questions about art conservation for your own pieces or collections, contact chloe@sageartconservation.com WEBSITE

Carlos Davila has two sculptures, Tangent and Sine Wave, installed as part of the Art In the Park, Worcester exhibit in Elm Park in downtown Worcester MA. The organizers stated that these two of Davila’s sculptures were chosen for the most visible entry to the park to draw attention to the exhibit and set the tone for the high caliber of work shown. The bright red and orange colors provide a vibrant contrast with the natural surroundings. See more of Davila's work here: WEBSITE

Eugenie Diserio's painting Urban Haze (acrylic, glitter on canvas, 17 x 21”) is in the “Summer In The City” exhibit which opened on June 15 at the Ferguson Library Gallery’s “Art At The Ferguson" co-sponsored by the Stamford Art Association. The show is juried by Eleanor Flatow, Associate Director of Hollis Taggart Gallery and runs to Sept. 21. Eugenie describes her piece as “Feeling a hot city at dusk or in the evening with light sparkling from its structures and skyline." WEBSITE

Connie Stancell is pleased to announce that her paintings will be exhibited in a solo show at the Cos Cob Library through June 29th. The show is hosted by The Friends and Staff of the Cos Cob Library. There was an opening reception in the Community Room on June 2nd. This exhibit features Connie's earlier florals, landscape and still life paintings. As a life long and avid gardener, many of these works began in her home gardens and were then completed in her studio. Her still life paintings began in her studio with her arrangements of plants and fruit and/or other items.

Elizabeth White @art.of_e collaborated on a traveling art exhibition of  5 foot x 5 foot banners that can now be seen near Dewitt Clinton Park on 54th and 12th Avenue in Manhattan. Eight artists met on zoom for 8 weeks to think about ritual, healing, community, mutuality and support. "RITUAL" will be touring the country through mid 2024.

Brian Whelan will be part of the Bloomsday Celebration onFriday, June 16th at 2:00pm at the Pequot Library in Southport. Bloomsday has become a day of celebrating renowned Irish writer and poet James Joyce. In his brilliant 1922 novel Ulysses, June 16 is the day Leopold Bloom meets his eventual wife, Nora Barnacle. This event will be marked by customary reverie and celebration. WEBSITE

JUNETEENTH 2023 CELEBRATIONS IN CT

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, two months after the Confederacy had surrendered. It was about 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in Southern states. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed into legislation a bill that federally recognized Juneteenth, and in late May of 2022, Gov. Ned Lamont signed a bill that recognized the holiday locally as well. See some of the events that will honor this day.

COPYRIGHT AND FAIR USE IN AI- GENERATED ARTWORKS

“Where does the artist end and the tool begin?” is one of many questions raised in a Center for Art Law panel discussion.

Center for Art Law’s 2023 conference brought together students, attorneys, artists, and arts and legal professionals to discuss contemporary and relevant topics at the intersection of art and law. Among the topics covered was one of the most pressing facing artists today: the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in art and the copyright issues surrounding it.
