News & Opportunities for Individual Creatives in

Fairfield County CT

April 2023

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Lynn Moore creates hand-cut, one-of-a-kind art crafted from discarded materials, natural objects and handmade paper. Lynn’s creative process involves searching for the perfect combination of materials and colors to bring her vision to life. Lynn is deeply inspired by the beauty and complexity of the natural world. She is constantly seeking new ways to incorporate organic materials into her work, such as leaves, twigs, and feathers. Her love of birds is evident in the delicacy and movement of each piece.

Lynn’s art is a celebration of the beauty and potential of discarded materials, and a reminder that we all have a responsibility to care for the planet we call home. Her work invites us to slow down, take a closer look, and appreciate the simple things in life that are often overlooked. WEBSITE

Nate Santana operates under the moniker Dead Society Poetry. DSP is a multimedia artistic exploration into our relationship with technology. DSP also conducts sociological analysis on the material realities of poverty and income inequality through music, poetry, and video art. WEBSITE

Brian Whitely is a multimedia artist combining painting and sculpture into both large and small scale work. His art incorporates subtle mark-making, line, color, and texture, creating an interplay between these understated elements. Brian works out of a studio at Metro Art Studios in Bridgeport. INSTAGRAM

ARTS & HEALING

If you missed our April Spotlight on Arts & Culture on "The Arts and Healing," or just want to hear it again or share with friends, you can hear it now as a podcast on Soundcloud.

On the show, we examined the power of creative expression as a means of coping, healing, and restoration. How can the arts can be a bridge to mindfulness, reflection and transformation, particularly in the context of the current state of our world? Examples included teaching painting, especially to young people, a concert, a play, and more.

Our guide for the show was Creative Wellness Coach, Dianne Niklaus. Guests were: Darcy Hicks, visual artist and Director of Education at The Norwalk Art Space; Felicity Kostakis, artist and art teacher; Tatiana Mori, Director of the Greenwich Arts Council; and Patricia Spugani, Community Outreach & Lighting Designer at Town Players of New Canaan, which recently produced Ordinary People to contribute to the mental health conversation.

IRELAND ASKS: WHAT IF ARTISTS COULD DITCH THEIR DAY JOBS?

A government pilot program is giving 2,000 artists $350 a week with no strings attached, allowing them to concentrate on creative pursuits. The program is the latest sign of growing international interest in universal basic income — when governments pay ‌their citizens, employed or not, a lump sum each month. Proponents of the idea, including antipoverty groups, left-wing politicians and libertarian organizations, say guaranteed income ensures a population’s sustenance and health better than other social welfare policies. Opponents say it’s simply giving the work-shy cash for nothing. What do you think? Read more and let us know.
