Summer Strings
July 16 – 27, 9am – 3:30 pm
Many professional musicians got their start in the Summer Strings program that has been a part of the community since the 1950s. At Summer Strings, students participate in large ensembles, chamber music groups, learn fiddle tunes, and dive into STEAM-inspired projects. The Program is day-long for all students working on skills that will enhance their string playing as well as more general musical knowledge. Beginning students start the day learning their new instrument in a group setting, then spend the rest of the day with a variety of music-related activities, including STEAM program projects. More experienced string players will be placed in an ensemble according to years of experience and/or an audition.

Connecticut Audubon
Summer Camp in Fairfield

June 4 - Aug. 17

The Connecticut Audubon Society’s summer camp at the Center at Fairfield is a state licensed summer camp, offering full- and half-day sessions in a unique learning environment. Campers, ages 4 through 14, attend week-long, science and nature-themed programs that use the Larsen Wildlife Sanctuary and the Center’s interactive classroom facilities to inspire and build a life-long connection to the natural world. Campers explore woods, ponds and streams to investigate nature’s riddles, learn about habitats, develop outdoor skills and meet live animals. Junior Science Lab sessions, offering advanced inquiry and hands-on experimentation, are available to students who have completed grades 6-8. Students, ages 14-18, can apply for half-day or full-day Junior Counselor volunteer positions. All camp programs are led by teacher-naturalist and college-educated staff with experience in education and/or science. First aid, CPR and Epi-Pen trained staff are on site, and our high staff-to-camper ratio ensures all campers a safe, educational and enjoyable camp experience. Silvermine Arts Center

The Silvermine School of Art summer camps and workshops for students ages 4 through 17 offer extraordinary opportunities for young children as well as high school students. Students learn from regionally and nationally known artists while meeting new friends and having fun on Silvermine’s 5-acre campus with its barns, classrooms, sculpture walk and picturesque waterfall.  Younger ones will gain new competence; older students can deepen knowledge of technique and composition or strengthen a portfolio for college.  

We offer over 110 art studio sessions in painting, drawing, photography, woodworking, ceramics, metal sculpture, printmaking, jewelry and mixed media. At every level, from beginner to advanced, enjoyment, participation and play are givens, and Silvermine’s campus and many landscape views adds to the experience of attending camp or taking summer workshop. 

Camps and workshops run in one-week sessions for ages 4 to 17. The price range is $240 to $475 depending on the hours and number of days.  Sessions are available for two age groups:  Juniors (ages: 4-10) and Youth (ages 11-17).  The first session begins on June 18 and camps run through August 24.

After creating a supportive and nurturing ensemble through ensemble building activities and theater games, campers will explore and rehearse a forty-five minute version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream - directly adapted from the script used in our mainstage production. Campers will learn acting techniques for creating character, the difference between monologue and soliloquy, general stagecraft, and more.

Learn how to turn your smartphone into a camera package and make movies at the Ridgefield Playhouse this summer! Filmmaker Katie Torpey will teach tweens and teens the fundamentals of filmmaking and visual storytelling using their smartphones. Campers will watch and analyze movies, receive hands-on instruction on storytelling, writing, directing, editing, camera equipment and lens. During the 2-week session, each camper will make their own short film and collaborate with other campers to make a film together. Every camper will get to show their film on the big screen and leave camp with the knowledge, skills and equipment to go off and make their own films in the future.

Summer Nature Immersion Experiences 

Spend summer at the Bartlett Arboretum, where environmental programs offer a unique transformational journey to help youth discover the natural "unplugged" world around them. Our programs are hands-on, incorporating STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) as we investigate the Bartlett’s extraordinary 93-acre campus. Through rotating study in Improv, Shakespeare and Modern Acting in age-appropriate groups (grades 5 & 6; 7 & 8; high school)5th and 6th grade, 7th and 8th grade, high school), students will tap into their own creativity to assemble a showcase performance on the final date drawing upon the instincts, teamwork and timing built in Improv, the technique and discipline developed in Modern Acting and the power tapped through Shakespeare’s language. Students will explore scene work for stage and screen as well as develop original scenes and sketches, including their own conceptual Shakespeare scenes drawing dialogue from the sonnets. Showcase performance is July 6, 2018 at 7:00pm.

Summer Arts Camp

Explore the exciting possibilities this summer break with Summer Camp at the Westport Arts Center! Get creative, innovative, and have fun through the arts by choosing from a catalog of unique and contemporary weeklong workshops. All workshops offer something for everyone ages 4-12. Morning camps run 9:30am – 12:30pm and include a snack; afternoon camps run shorter, just 2 hours, from 1:30 to 3:30pm. AM: Culture Arts
From Japanese silk painting, to Native American dream catchers, students will be exposed to an array of materials and medias!
Ages 4-7.  $395 (members, $370)

PM Graphic Novel
This course will guide students as they design their own characters and illustrate their own stories on professional-standard comic strip storyboards and book covers.

Special Arts

Offering insight into artistic processes and techniques and promoting self-awareness and self-esteem through projects, fostering critical thinking and creative innovation.

Glass Blowing with Dylan Cotton

Students learn all about the hot glass studio and glassblowing in Cotton’s studio, including history, technology, terminology and techniques to make their own glass works

AM: Clay Creations
Build, sculpt, and manipulate professional-quality air-dry clay, using a mix of clay tools, upcycled materials, and your hands to make sculptures, creatures, and more!

Students will be introduce to a different artist each day, completing a project unique to the style of that artist.

July 9 – 13
AM: All About Me
Using relief printing, stamping, and monotype, students will explore the world of printmaking, creating works that combine fine-line, texture and layered colors.
Ages 4-7.  $390 (members, $365)

PM: Illustration and Imagination
Students will be introduced to traditional Indian Miniature Painting, and then bring to life imaginative scenes through detailed drawing, watercolor and gouache paints.

Magical Masks
Students will bring 3 different characters to life as they create 3 completely unique masks following different techniques.

PM Digital Darkroom and Photography
Starting with the basics, students explore the new technologies and build a portfolio over this weeklong session. Learning how to use a digital camera on manual settings, they will discover the skills it takes to digitally edit their work and professionally print their images with hands-on experience.Requires students to be in possession of own DSLR camera and a laptop with Adobe Photoshop Elements available during class hours.

AM: Summer Studio
Responding to the independent young artist wanting choice and freedom, this class allows students to choose from two different projects each day, so they can explore a vast array of materials and mediums.

Students work on a small scale with brightly-colored polymer clay and hi-end sculpting tools to bring animation to objects.

AM: Painting Workshop
Exploring the world of art through watercolor, gouache, and acrylic paints, students learn color theory, and creating vibrant and fun works of art.

Starting with their  own hardcover sketchbook, students will meet artists and designers who will help them build their graffiti skills, learn different writing and drawing styles, and play with design.

Tie-Dye
Tie-dye isn’t just t-shirts! Students will explore 5 different methods of tie dying, combining math, pattern, and color theory to create amazing works of wearable art!

Westport Historical Society
Time Travelers Summer Camp
Join an award-winning education team for one of three Time Travelers Summer Camp sessions. Each week-long session is open for children ages 7-12 and will take place from 9 am to 3 pm. Each session will also include a one-day field trip to a local site during the week and a special end-of-camp celebration on Friday. $250/Members, $300/Non-members, $75 for daily registration and $10 sibling discount. Global Archaeologists
Aug. 20-24 
Travel in time and around the globe to discover artwork, events, and traditions from different countries and cultures. Each day a different continent! Includes a trip to Compo Beach.
