Fear has a way of making itself sound reasonable.
It tells you to stay guarded. It tells you to watch for what other people are doing wrong. It reminds you of what happened before and gives you plenty of reasons to believe that staying suspicious is the safest choice.
But fear is not the same thing as guidance.
In this week’s video, REWIND MOMENT: Why a Fearful Mind is Always Vulnerable, we look at A Course in Miracles, Chapter 9, Section III, “The Correction of Error.” The Course points out how quickly the ego becomes alert to the errors of others—and how natural judgment can feel when you are looking through fear.
The problem is that the more attention you give to what everybody else is doing wrong, the easier it becomes to overlook what fear is doing in your own mind.
What Are You Using the Situation to Prove?
When someone disappoints you, hurts you, or behaves in a way you do not understand, your mind may immediately begin building a case.
They cannot be trusted.
They should know better.
You have every reason to stay guarded.
Maybe the facts are accurate. But there is still another question worth asking: What are you using those facts to prove?
Are you using them to prove that fear is necessary? Will that separation keep you safe? That somebody else has to change before you can be peaceful?
You do not have to deny what happened in order to question what your mind is doing with it.
Try bringing one situation to mind this week and ask yourself:
What am I judging most strongly here?
What fear is underneath that judgment?
Am I using this situation to justify staying afraid?
What might I see differently if I did not have to defend the fear?
You do not need to force yourself into forgiveness or pretend you feel peaceful when you do not. Start by becoming willing to see the fear clearly.
The Course is not asking you to become better at correcting everybody else. It is inviting you to notice where the real correction can begin.
And sometimes that begins with a very simple recognition:
I may have reasons for my fear, but I do not have to keep giving those reasons authority over my peace.
