Hello Miracle Family,
The ballot came in the mail this week, one of those county-level elections that most people ignore. I almost did too. But I held it in my hand for a moment longer than usual. Not because I was thinking about politics, but because I’d just finished sitting with A Course in Miracles Lesson 284:
“I can elect to change all thoughts that hurt.”
That word — elect — holds powerful intention.. I started thinking about how the Course uses 'choose' a lot, but 'elect' more selectively. It's like the Course is saying, “Pay attention. This one matters.”
In this week’s class, I kept coming back to that idea. I realized that I’m casting votes all day long in how I interpret people, how I talk to myself, and how I respond to the world. Every thought is a ballot. Every thought is a declaration. Peace or fear. Love or guilt. Truth or illusion.
And if I’m honest, I don’t always like what I am electing to rule.
That’s why I went back to the text and pulled out a few more places where the Course uses the word elect. These moments feel like spiritual turning points. Maybe they’ll land for you, too:
“You can elect to remember what you are.” (T-15.IX.7:3)
“He need merely elect to open his mind to the possibility of receiving something new.” (M-9.1:5)
“Ask, then, but do not forget that asking is not done by words, but through the teacher you elect.” (T-12.V.8:10)
“I elected both to teach and to learn so that I could become what I am.” (T-5.VII.6:11)
“As soon as a teacher of God is willing to elect to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all things, he finds himself so much more at peace…” (M-9.2:2)
Those aren’t surface-level choices. They’re directional shifts, votes for what you want to rule your life. And the truth is, every moment is an election. Not just during a season or a crisis, but right now, in this very thought. You're not just choosing how to feel. You're electing which world to live in: Heaven or Hell.
