"I think as a company, if you can get those two things right - having a clear direction on what you are trying to do and bringing in great people who can execute on the stuff - then you can do pretty well."

Mark Zuckerberg

The mission to dock HE Space to CS Group has launched - Scott Millican retires

After 40 years, Scott Millican, founder and shareholder of HE Space, has decided to retire.

Lia Millican and Scott Millican

In 1982, Scott Millican founded HE Space. Since then, the company has expanded and grown to the market leader it is today. From the very start, Scott placed employee care and support at the heart of the business.

After 40 years, Scott has decided to retire. It was important for him to make sure the prospective buyer is a company which shares HE Space’s core values. The transaction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023.

Scott Millican commented: “I am happy and proud to announce that we have launched the mission to dock HE SPACE to CS GROUP. In the forty years since HE SPACE was founded, we have had the privilege to significantly contribute to the space community in Europe, the world and its orbit. As the planet enters increasingly critical conditions, a long-term commitment to the space industry is absolutely necessary to serve the protection of the planet and all its inhabitants. I have no doubt that HE SPACE will find this commitment in its new owner, and I am grateful both for the confidence that CS GROUP has in the further potential of the business, and for the dedication of so many people at HE SPACE and across the space community that has brought HE SPACE to where it is today.”

CS Group is a French multinational with a strong presence in the space industry. Its employee-focused values align closely with those of HE Space and it has a vision to build the international business with HE Space at its core.

At the forefront of innovation at Space Tech Expo Europe

Europe's biggest B2B space innovation event returned to Bremen (Germany) in mid November this year. Space Tech Expo Europe is the

ultimate showcase of the space industry's current and future potential so HE Space couldn't miss the chance to see first hand some of the industry's most exciting new technologies and products.

Impressions of Space Tech Expo Europe 2022 in Bremen.

From November 15 to 17, HE Space was again represented with a stand at the Space Tech Expo Europe in Bremen. It was a real pleasure to meet familiar faces from the European space industry and to make new contacts.

Melanie Högemann, organiser and host of the stand reports that “everyone I spoke to enjoyed talking in person rather than just seeing each other only via video call.” This also underlines our corporate approach: there is nothing better than a personal exchange to explain what we do and how we do it.

Our recruiters Tobias Bruns and Chiara Grossardi had many conversations with students interested in a career in space. Our business developers Ben Kawak and Jason Maroothynaden travelled to Bremen from France and England to strengthen their networks and talk to potential new customers.

“Already during the event we were convinced that it was really worthwhile to participate in Europe’s largest exhibition for the space industry. That’s why we have already registered for next year’s edition,” Melanie concludes.

Would you like to know how to win hearts and minds with your presentations?

At the end of September a group of HE Space on-site colleagues working in the Netherlands and Germany gathered at the Noordwijk office to take part in the training ‘Winning Hearts and Minds - Presenting with Confidence’ offered by coaching experts, Naijberg Milne.

"Winning Hearts and Minds - Presenting with confidence" is an intensive two-day course designed for small groups (8 participants) with the aim of transforming professionals of different backgrounds and personalities into engaging and effective presenters who will get their message across. The course has been developed over 20 years and combines insights of psychologists and behavioural experts with the practical methods of professional stage performance.

Here is what our colleagues shared after taking part into the course:

"It was a quite different experience from any other training course that I did, even with respect to presentation skills. The focus of the course was to improve the presentation skills by using techniques from the acting world, who are people that perform on stage for a living. To take advantage of this course, you really need to be able to take a risk and commit yourself to doing the work. I think we all came out of the course with a much better understanding on how to improve our presentations and to engage with the audience." Fausto Vieira, Applications Engineer at ESTEC.

"Presenting with confidence is not just an appealing title for the module of this program, but a promise. Francois and Jean-Sebastien lead each trainee through a personal journey of discovering and bringing out surprising presenting skills that one did not think nor know to have. And they do this in the most gentle way to make each type of personality comfortable in the situation. There is a very high chance that one will leave the classroom with an enhanced confidence to have the potential to become a good presenter and with a valuable and practical package of tools to work on to become such. And a big regret that the module is already over…" Francesca Castagna, Payload Operations Engineer in Munich.

A new session of this popular training is scheduled for February 2023. There are only a few more spots available, so if you're interested in joining please contact your local HR Advisor as soon as possible.

How to solve a space challenge in two days - ActInSpace hackaton 2022

The international ActInSpace hackaton returned in November this year across 34 countries and 66 different cities worldwide. Some HE Space colleagues helped out students in the Netherlands at the Space Business Innovation Centre (SBIC) in Noordwijk.

ActInSpace is an international innovation contest where young professionals work hard for 2 full days to meet challenges designed by space organisations like ESA, Airbus and CNES. At the end of the 2 days, they present a business case with their solution for the problems we face in space or on earth using space data or space technology. This year ‘s winning team Ecosmic focused on avoiding space collisions using intelligent satellites with star trackers. They will compete again in Cannes against other national winners at the international final on February 13 and 14 2023.

This year in Leiden 10 teams participated and the level of detail in the presentations was high. The students and young professionals had thought about their market position, the technology, competitors, the planning for launching their products and when they would become profitable.

This high level was also achieved with the support of experienced mentors like our colleague Eduardo Soares de Araújo, Scheduling Controller at ESTEC. He has been a mentor for these kind of competitions before and coached the teams.

HE Space also supported the jury which consisted of Raoul Voeten (NL Space Campus), Erik van der Heiden (ESA business broker), Bastiaan de Roo (Director Entrepreneurship of PLNT) and our own Barbara ten Berge (HE Space Marketing and Communication). They looked at the validity of the economic models, the innovation and originality of the project, potential impact on business and/or society, leadership & team and last but not least which project was the most inspirational.

Supporting ActInSpace and other hackathons is a great way to share our knowledge and support students and young professionals in this exciting experience that might even lead to the beginning of a new start-up company. If you are interested in supporting events like this please contact Barbara ten Berge.

HE Space Children's Foundation - looking back at 2022 and future plans for 2023

On 24 November, the HE Space Children’s Foundation board met online. In this year's final meeting, we looked back at the projects we supported and made plans for the year ahead.

In 2022 the HE Space Children's Foundation supported 14 projects in 12 different countries (Surinam, India, Cambodia, Nepal, Ukraine, Myanmar, Israel, Haiti, Kenya, Romania, Ivory Coast, Sudan). We have cooperated with large organisations like IAF and Unicef and trusted local partners.

Thanks to your support we were able to donate to Ukraine and provide critical help to children and their families.

What is in store for next year? In 2023 we plan to support Nosy Komba with a new initiative: organising a Teach the Teachers training. The project has become so successful that there is a need for expansion of the school and more teachers. We have already received some proposals from projects we supported in the past years, but there is always room for new proposals. So if you have any new projects in mind please don't hesitate to get in touch with Barbara ten Berge at btenberge@hespace.com.

We are excited to mention that we have started on the renewal of our website which was becoming really outdated. If you are inspired to help us with the website, in the review committee or with Facebook, then please contact Barbara ten Berge.
