Here's to hoping you're harnessing the power of the lion, as we enter the month of March. Last month we shared our thoughts on the importance of providing opportunities for your students to share their hopes and fears about upcoming standardized assessments and milestones.
This month, we would ask you to prioritize YOUR self care; get enough sleep, meditate, stretch, nourish your body inside and out. But most of all, surround yourself with the people and things that bring you joy, because a happy teacher is better able to create a happy space for learning.

| | | Literary Ladies Guide
Excerpt from website: Literary Ladies Guide was started in 2012 as an outgrowth of Literary Ladies Guide to the Writing Life, a book by Nava Atlas, writer, visual artist, designer — and major book nerd.
Our goal: To be the web’s most comprehensive resource on classic women’s literature, focusing mainly on women who wrote in the English language, as well as global authors who were translated extensively.
Our mission: To elevate the voices and stature of women writers, and to be inspired by those who came before us. Literary Ladies Guide honors the contributions of women to literature and literary history.
Our hope: To inspire readers and writers from all walks of life through the lives and words of the women authors of the past, and to help readers discover or rediscover those who have been forgotten or under-appreciated.
And for fun and education: We also present articles on literary travels, the bookish life, and advice for writers, mainly from the classic women authors represented on the site.

Excerpt from website: Our Center for Women’s History is the first of its kind in the nation within the walls of a major museum. At the Center, we explore the lives and legacies of women who have shaped and continue to shape the American experience. As a hub for scholarship and education, the Center demonstrates how women across the spectrum of race, class, and sexuality exercised power and effected change. Guided by a committee of distinguished historians and informed by the latest research, the Center features permanent installations, temporary exhibitions, and a vibrant array of talks and programs, enriching the cultural landscape of New York City and creating new opportunities for historical discovery.

| | | | Isabela (Belle) Espinal, a graduate of TR@TC Cohort C and educator at the Hamilton Grange MS, took co-teaching to a new level when she decided to engage in a cross-content collaboration with a teacher from the Hunter Science HS. Following Dominican Independence Day, this "dream team" joined forces to provide their students with a nurturing space to explore their cultural identities and create original works of art to share with their friends and families at the Amsterdam Collective Casa De Cultura. Pictured below is the dream team (Nick Kozak and Bell Espinal) along with a piece from the student exhibit.

| Upcoming Events and Professional Learning Opportunities |
| | | | | TCICP Professional Development: Spring/Summer - Challenging Behavior and Crisis Paraprofessionals is aimed at crisis paras or paraprofessionals from grades PreK to 12. This one-day workshop examines how learning about the brain can help us better understand our students’ behavior and how we can become more effective at both preventing and de-escalating challenging behaviors at school. This workshop will be held on the June Chancellor's Day (June 4) at Teachers College. For more information or to register, click here.
- Unleashing Learning for All: Teaching for Equity and Justice in Heterogeneous Classrooms is for educators who want to learn to plan curriculum and instruction that offer challenges and support for a wide range of learners. This institute will be from June 29 to July 2 at Battery Park City School. For more information and to register, click here.

We are happy to inform you that NYC Ladders for Leaders is accepting applications for the summer of 2020. If you are a student looking for valuable work experience and the opportunity to explore your career options, please complete the Ladders application and take the first step to landing your dream internship.
What Does the Program Offer?
Ladders for Leaders gives students the unique opportunity to explore their interests and discover new ones through:
- Pre-Employment Training: Receive help with résumé and cover letter writing, and interview skills. Learn essential workplace readiness skills and business etiquette.
- Paid Summer Internships: Paid internship opportunities in a variety of industries that match students’ interests. Gain experience with well-known companies like Boston Consulting Group, Bank of America, Amalgamated Bank, Medidata, Office of Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York, Xandr , and Tishman Speyer.
- Opportunities to Join our Growing Alumni Network: Our broad network of alumni, post-internship opportunities, and networking events are open only to past participants of the program.
Who is Eligible?
To apply for Ladders for Leaders, you must:
- Be between the ages of 16 and 21, and currently enrolled in high school or college
- Have a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00
- Be a current resident of one of the five boroughs of New York City
- Have some form of prior work experience, either paid or volunteer
- Be legally authorized to work in the United States

Our Purpose
These routines are designed to tackle literacy barriers that students encounter across content levels. Routines have the power not only to give students multiple and rich experiences in learning but also to transfer ownership of learning to the students themselves. In this way, students are free from the need to depend on teachers for access to knowledge. This transition in learning behavior also allows teachers to listen and observe their students in action.

Mil Mundos Bookstore Expert from the website:
The idea for Mil Mundos Books came about in the Fall of 2018, when construction for newer, over-priced housing was finally spilling over Myrtle Ave into eastern Bushwick, and new businesses in the area were popping up catering primarily to those moving into said housing. But, what about the community of folks already living in Bushwick? Does your community still feel like your own, when you are surrounded by constant work being done to your neighborhood, none of which seems to be for you?
We wanted to create a business with a commitment to accessibility and a mission of empowering those already in the neighborhood. Enter Mil Mundos Books: currently the only bookstore in Bushwick east of Myrtle Ave, with nearly 50% of its titles available in Spanish - the dominant language spoken in Bushwick. We curate for those seeking empowerment through literature, workshops, events, and the sustenance of community. A space where two people can talk excitedly in any language without being told to keep the volume down; where culture is celebrated and held close. Accessibility for those already present in our community is a priority for us, regardless of means.
During a time where engaging with real estate feels completely inaccessible, and entire neighborhoods are being offered up by our elected officials to tech companies bargaining for the best cash deal, we at Mil Mundos feel there is no better option than to hold ground, and insist on making a space where Black, Latinx and Indigenous heritage can be celebrated and explored.

| | READY FOR TENURE
Teachers begin working on probation and are generally eligible for tenure at the end of their fourth year. Tenure isn’t automatically granted at the end of your probationary period. To be granted tenure, you must:
- Be on track to complete all your state certification and city licensing requirements;
- file an application and receive professional certification;
- have a record of acceptable service during your probationary period; and be recommended for tenure by your principal.
Your tenure becomes permanent only after you complete all your certification requirements. Visit UFT.org and sign up for a Tenure PD. Stay on track!

| | PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION
Are you ready to apply for your Professional Certification?
You have five years from the date of your initial teaching certificate to fulfill the requirements for your professional certificate. You should make sure you’re keeping track of your completed requirements by logging into your online TEACH account at the State Education Department website. Do not wait until your fifth year to apply for your professional certificate!
To get your professional certificate, you’ll need to show that you’ve completed the following requirements:
- A master’s degree;
- 12 graduate credits in the certificate area’s content core or a related field (if your master’s degree is pedagogical, this 12-credit requirement is already met by the program);
- Three years of full-time teaching experience;
- One year of mentored experience; and
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
