MAY 2020 I Spring Edition Newsletter
A message from TR@TC...

Borrowing from the words of wisdom offered by a mental health expert, Angelo Ortiz, during a recent chat on psychology and communities of color, we invite you to enter the month of May with these three words:
Release
Allow
Hydrate

Release the worries about circumstances that are beyond your control, and allow yourselves (and your students) to invite creativity, positivity, and joy into the uncertainty that surrounds us. Hydrate with abandon, because teachers know, better than anyone, just how magical it is to be able to drink “all the water” and because water supports digestion, regeneration, and deep thinking. And while you focus on these three words, we encourage you to ask yourselves the following questions:

  • What can engagement look like in the remote learning space?
  • What new opportunities does being in the homes of your students offer, as you approach the end of the school year?
  • How can you collectively prioritize wellness in the coming months?
  • What do you (and your students) care about right now?

We cannot overlook how challenging this academic year has been for all members of the school community, especially those who looked forward to graduation ceremonies, prom, and other milestones that make up the very fabric of the academic spaces we inhabit. What we can do is persevere and believe that together we can make this crisis into a time of learning, growth, and connection.

In closing we offer our heartfelt gratitude and commitment to continue supporting your endeavors to nurture, protect, and teach the children of this great city-and beyond.

Yours in appreciation,
The TR@TC Team

Youth Activism
From website:  "We seek a society in which more Black, Latinx, Asian American, and Native American youth are able to advocate for policies and candidates that improve their safety, their education, and their futures.

To do so, we want to support those of you who are prioritizing the needs of underrepresented voices in the political process. We aim to support efforts that advance the knowledge, skills, and engagement of young people of color towards greater civic participation and political activism.

This work is being done with the interests, identities, and life experiences of young people of color front and center and using creative and innovative strategies including, but not limited to media, technology, online campaigns, and grassroots organizing to achieve your goals."

Support Teaching Artists
Many artists and healers are experiencing food and shelter insecurity, as a result of the closures and cancellations triggered nationwide by the COVID-19 pandemic. Consider hiring teaching artists to supplement the learning in your classrooms- especially artists of color, who reportedly suffer the most during economic contractions. Here are a few resources to support in this endeavor:

Sharing our stories
For most education professionals, this has been a time of hyperactivity, as we rush to the aid and support of our school communities, families, and friends. We encourage you and your students to pause and allow yourselves time to reflect and document your lived experiences; it is important that the voices of all communities be reflected in the narratives surrounding this time in history.
  • Citizen Archivists - This is a work in progress initiative that endeavors to collect, curate, and preserve the narratives of all community members, during the global pandemic. Please email teaching.residents@tc.columbia.edu, if you'd like to contribute with your students.
  • The Women of Color Archive - This labor of love was birthed by Induction Mentor and Scholar, Wendy Barrales, in an effort to document and preserve the powerful, intergenerational stories of women of color. If you'd like to learn more about how you can contribute to this project, please email JAD2222@tc.columbia.edu.
  • Siembra Initiative - A grassroots program of Sofrito Media Group that creates free or low cost training opportunities for entrepreneurs, small business, non profit organizations, art circles and community activists to increase their social footprint and elevate influence online. If you want to book a virtual session or wish to donate to the Siembra Initiative, please email SiembraInitiative@sofritomediagroup.com

TR@TC Literary Spotlight

Excerpt from Synopsis: "Afterlife is a compact, nimble, and sharply droll novel. Set in this political moment of tribalism and distrust, it asks: What do we owe those in crisis in our families, including—maybe especially—members of our human family? How do we live in a broken world without losing faith in one another or ourselves? And how do we stay true to those glorious souls we have lost?"

Excerpt from Synopsis: "Rich with hard-won wisdom and humanity, set in locales from Miami and Port-au-Prince to a small unnamed country in the Caribbean and beyond, Everything Inside is at once wide in scope and intimate, as it explores the forces that pull us together, or drive us apart, sometimes in the same searing instant."

Excerpt from Synopsis: "Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people..."
