HAPPENING TOMORROW!

We are thrilled to be able to host another series of workshops led by LaToya Strong and Wendy Barrales, who inaugurated the New Teacher Institute, this past August. NTI was a series of teacher workshops "rooted in Black and Indigenous liberatory practices that support early career educators," and we look forward to continuing to offer space for teachers to come together to learn and build community. The first session flyer is posted here. Mark your calendars for Thursday, January 21st, 2020, with 2 more sessions to follow in the spring and summer. Click here to RSVP for October.

THIS FRIDAY, October 23rd!

Join Martha St. Jean as she leads a workshop on deconstructing Blackness and beauty. After witnessing students partake in a paper bag test, St. Jean decided to explore the messaging of beauty and its effect on our individual and collective psyches. The words of Malcolm X continue to ring true, "Who taught you to hate the color of your skin? Who taught you to hate the texture of your hair? Who taught you to hate the shape of your nose and the shape of your lips? Who taught you to hate yourself from the top of your head to the soles of your feet?" Click here to RSVP

TR@TC Teacher Inquiry Groups

Do you have quandaries, discontents, puzzles, great moments in your teaching?  In sharing, discussing them with other teachers, you may see more about them.  Often doing this leads you to understandings and/or new questions, some of which can be shared as a great service to the field.  Consider and contact Cindy Ballenger at cindyballenger@gmail.com or Christian Wu at caw2214@tc.columbia.edu if you are interested or would like more information.

Developing your Remote Teaching Skills Through Virtual Intervisitations

Special thanks to the teachers who participated in our Intervisitation Pilot, last summer; we have learned so much from those visits, and look forward to continuing to learn from you and your students.

As we approach the end of the first quarter, of a uniquely challenging school year, having the opportunity to connect with teachers outside of our school communities has become crucial to the development of our practice!

Join us again, as we seek to continue developing this professional learning community through intentional thought partnership and sharing of resources.

National Board Certification is a professional teaching credential that recognizes accomplished teachers committed to student learning. Candidates for certification undergo a portfolio process to demonstrate exemplary content knowledge and effective teaching practices. Achieving certification results in a teaching credential recognized in all 50 US states. In NYC, candidates also receive a significant financial incentive, the Master's +30 salary differential. If you are interested in pursuing certification this year (or just want more information), please contact TR@TC alum, Devon Hedrick-Shaw (shaw.dts@gmail.com), who will be facilitating certification workshops.

A message from Alliance for Quality Education

If you are interested in deepening your skills as an education justice advocate and parent leader, we invite you to apply to the Ed Warrior Program. The Ed Warriors program is an 8-10 week community and skills building series. Participants will learn about statewide policies that affect education, NY's political landscape, and a deep dive into organizing, public speaking, & more!

What to expect: The program will begin November 17th and will run until the end of the school year. The first few sessions take place once a month. From January through March, sessions will take place bi-weekly before returning to a monthly schedule. The sessions will take place from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm on the scheduled meeting dates.

If you are 1) a parent of color, and 2) a NYCDOE parent, we strongly encourage you to apply to the program. At the moment, we do not have capacity to accept non-parents and/or non BIPOC participants. We are committed to centering the voices of BIPOC parents and the Ed Warrior is a space to do so. Apply Here

Join Dr. Angel Acosta to find support and process some of the grief and tension that come with navigating the recent wave of structural violence and inequality. Our hope is that this session will aid participants with increasing their capacity to face the reality of life in America at this specific moment, where grief and an overwhelming awareness for overdue change is palpable. This will also be a reception and will create space to meet others, especially people who have gone through Contemplating 400 Years of Inequality trainings.

This space is for everyone interested in building community and connecting across differences. Click here to register
