Professional Learning Communities and Collaborations

BLM at Schools: Join the Community Blog

Do you teach a great lesson around one of the 13 principles of the Black Lives Matter movement? Are you trying to revamp your "classroom management" approach to reflect an abolitionist stance? Struggling to refocus your curriculum with an antiracist lens?

We want to hear from you!

BLM at Schools NYC is starting a community blog for educators to share, reflect and engage with each other on antiracist pedagogy throughout this Year of Purpose. Submissions need not offer neatly packaged curriculum or rosy success stories (although those are welcome, too!). We're building a space for educators from across NYC to challenge, support and inspire one another as we work to passionately affirm that Black Lives Matter in every lesson, every class, every day. Please send submissions (1000 words max.) to Naomi, nrsharlin@gmail.com and Steph, skadison@bhsec.bard.edu

"But they're illiterate": Discourses of the Illiteracy of Bilingual Latinx students in Heritage & Foreign Language Education

Erica Saldívar GarcíaNew York University

Friday, November 6, 2020
2 – 3:30 PM, via Zoom
The Spanish heritage language education of bilingual Latinx students has been partly premised on the idea that while these students can generally communicate in Spanish to some capacity, they lack fundamental literacy skills. This belief manifests itself in everyday discourses in schools used to justify bilingual Latinx student's placement in beginning foreign language classes and other courses designed to develop academic literacy. In this conversation, Dr. Saldivar Garcia will provide a historical overview of how the concept of literacy began to take center stage in Spanish heritage language education, using widely available curricular materials, and share implications for working with bilingual Latinx students.

Wildly Safe with Upper Manhattan Forest Kids:

In our bustling city with many modern conveniences, it's sometimes easy to forget the natural state of things. And while there's so much to love about city life with its neat grid lined intersections and ornamental plants, there's a whole world of natural wildness located in our city's green spaces that also offers amazing experiences. Even as the weather gets colder there's so much to gain from staying outside a bit longer. If we're dressed and prepared appropriately, the outdoors can be enjoyed far into the winter months quite safely and comfortably.

We invite you to come along with us and our wilderness adventures in the North Woods of Central Park! Registration for our November classes is now open for children up to 6 years old. Click here to register now!

Mark your calendars for Thursday, January 21st, 2020! LaToya Strong and Wendy Barrales, creators of the New Teacher Institute, a series of teacher workshops "rooted in Black and Indigenous liberatory practices that support early career educators," will continue to offer space for teachers to come together to learn and build community. We will continue to post reminders, as the date approaches.
