Good to see you again! We are re-launching the TNI Drugs & Democracy bulletin to keep you informed of new developments in global drug policy and TNI’s work in this field. 

Formed in 1996, the TNI Drugs & Democracy programme explores the underlying causes of drug production and consumption and advocates for evidence-based policies that respect the human rights of producers and consumers.

What does a coca substitution project look like in Colombia?

Crop substitution is a key element in the peace accord signed between the government of Colombia and the FARC in 2016. The success of the peace agreement will depend partially on how substitution is handled. There are tremendous challenges ahead, with coca production dominating the rural economy in many poor parts of Colombia. As we made a visit to the Briceño Crop Substitution Pilot Project, local communities shared their hopes and discontents.

Will Myanmar lead drug policy reform in Southeast Asia?

The government of Myanmar is currently debating amendments to its drug law which could make the country a leader in progressive drug policy reform in its region. The amendments propose a shift away from repressive policies and towards a health-based approach, which could lead the way for a huge improvement to thousands of peoples’ lives. However, in some key areas, the amendment does not go far enough, with some provisions of the law still standing in the way of real progress and even opening the door for human rights abuses.
