Subject: What Makes a Confession Valid? What about Invalid?

Fr. Chris Alar answers the questions inside

Dear Friend,

With Divine Mercy Sunday just a few days away, and many planning on going to Confession to avail themselves of the extraordinary graces available on this day, we thought it would be a good idea to remind everyone of what is necessary to make a valid confession.

Father Chris Alar answered this question in the Top Ten Questions about Divine Mercy Sunday video we posted earlier.

We've extracted his comments about this specific question in the video below to make it easy to review and share with others, especially those who may not have been to Confession in some time.

What can make a Confession invalid?

This question is equally important, so we recommend you take just two minutes to review and reflect on Father's direction so that you are good to go and open to the fullness of grace.

Fr. Chris Alar, MIC

Provincial Superior of the Marian Fathers at the National Shrine of Divine Mercy

Here's what Jesus told St. Faustina to write about the Sacrament of Penance, or Confession.

Write, speak of My mercy. Tell souls where they are to look for solace; that is in the Tribunal of Mercy [Sacrament of Reconciliation]. There the greatest miracles take place [and] are incessantly repeated. To avail oneself of this miracle, it is not necessary to go on a great pilgrimage or to carry out some external ceremony; it suffices to come with faith to the feet of My representative and to reveal to him one's misery, and the miracle of Divine Mercy will be fully demonstrated.

Were a soul like a decaying corpse so that from a human standpoint, there would be no [hope of] restoration and everything would already be lost, it is not so with God. The miracle of Divine Mercy restores that soul in full. Oh, how miserable are those who do not take advantage of the miracle of God's mercy! You will call out in vain, but it will be too late.
