| During our meeting in July, this question was raised: Can Guardian Angels be in two places at once? Here is the answer from Fr. Wolfgang of Opus Angelorum, thanks to the work of our facilitator, Eloise. | | | To give a broader understanding, the angels cannot be at two different places at the same time.According to Thomas Aquinas, the angels, even though being purely spiritual, they are still finite creatures and cannot be in more than one place at a time. They are not bound by space like a body (you cannot measure a spiritual being in inches and feet, in fact they can penetrate matter), but when he is said to be “in a place,” it means he is present there by his power and acts on a body or in a location. His presence is definitive—meaning he’s wholly present wherever he is acting, but only in one place at any one time. However, angels are extremely fast in movement, so they may appear to be in multiple places in fast succession to the point that it seems to our human perception he can be present in various places at the same time. He can be in Ohio now and a split second later in Alaska. Now to the question whether an angel can do more than one thing at the same time? Thomas Aquinas says that an angel can know many things simultaneously, because they have infused knowledge and do not rely on the senses, so they can grasp many truths at once in a unified act. From here Thomas Aquinas teaches that an angel can perform multiple operations if those actions flow from a single intention or act of will, because angelic action is rooted in intellect and will, not in bodily movement.

The Consecration to the Guardian Angel The angel inflames the well-disposed soul with the love of God and gives true spiritual gladness and joy, taking away all sadness and disturbance which the enemy brings on. The reason why the good angel imparts such consolations on a soul is to move and enkindle the will, inflaming it with charity, which is the principal good of the spiritual life. It is exactly this love which gives us then the strength to be self-controlled, to bear our sufferings with patience, peace, and even joy. In sum, it enables us to embrace our daily cross with love. For when the will is moved by love and joy, all things become lighter. Share a consolation you have received sometime in your life. How do you plan to consciously entrust your body, senses, imagination, memory, intellect, and will to your Guardian Angel’s protection and guidance regularly?
