Why Tobago is a great place to learn to dive

The rich and diverse reefs of Tobago, coupled with calm and sheltered waters, make the island a perfect place to learn to dive - but there's plenty to entertain advanced divers also.

Tobago diving is split between the island's Caribbean and Atlantic coasts, with the Caribbean side mostly clear and calm with shallow reefs and perfect learning conditions, but without the hordes of divers that clutter up reefs in other locations. For more experienced divers, the strong currents of Tobago's exposed Atlantic coast make for thrilling drift dives and the chance to spot larger pelagic species.

Tobago’s best entry-level dive sites

Nutrient-rich waters flowing from the outflow of the Orinoco River ensure that the reefs around Tobago are filled with a stunning array of marine life - including the largest brain coral in the Western Hemisphere. With 50 different dive sites around the island there is much to choose from. Here's some of the top spots for beginners.

Tobago’s Carnival Waters

DIVE correspondent, conservationist and artist Francesca Page visited Tobago and found that the rich colour she experienced below the surface was repeated in the carnival atmosphere of the island back on land. Read about her adventures here.
