Summer 2023 magazine preview

Letter from the Editor

Every now and then as a publisher, you see something so remarkable that you just have to find space in your magazine to show the world. Such is the case with Michal  Štros' innovative use of modified vintage lenses to produce the stunningly artistic shot that graces the cover of this Summer's issue of DIVE.

And, speaking of photography - make sure you check out the fantastic winners of our returning Big Shot underwater photography competition in association with Aggressor Adventures, where some truly talented individuals have presented us with their amazing shots of the largest underwater subjects.

Best wishes,

Graeme Gourlay, publisher

Indonesia is widely regarded as being home to the best scuba diving in the world, and there are two particular spots that Mark B Hatter considers to be the ‘bullseyes within the bullseye’ of the Indonesian archipelago. Follow his journey with Aggressor Adventures to Raja Ampat and the Lembeh Strait.

If you want to dive with a lot of wrecks and a lot of sharks, North Carolina is a place you need to visit. Timo Dersch reports from its treacherous Atlantic coastline, where large gangs of ragged-tooth sand tiger sharks appear to enjoy hanging out on the wrecks as much as human divers.

Underwater photography is so much more than just taking photographs. Producing brilliant art requires dedication, experimentation and – as Czech photographer Michal Štros reveals – modification of the equipment. Check out Michal’s guide to his modified vintage lens technique, and the stunning portfolio of pictures he’s created to accompany it.

Marine biologist, writer and broadcaster Helen Scales details how nudibranchs – one of the smallest creatures in our oceans – and sperm whales – one of the largest – are both as equally important and as equally threatened, in our exclusive extract from her new book, Around the Ocean in 80 Fish & Other Sea Life.

DIVE’s Big Shot Megafauna photo competition definitely came back with a big bang! We received hundreds of photographs of sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles, dugong, manatee, seals and manta rays and spent long hours whittling them down to find the winner. Check out the winning photograph and the highly-commended runners-up as they were meant to be seen, in art-quality print.

Also in this issue of DIVE: Profile of master boat and RIB builder, Apex Boats; the importance of voicing pre-dive concerns; reviews of top ocean reads The Bathysphere Book and Many Things Under a Rock; review of upcoming underwater indie movie The Dive; Marine Curio – harp sponge; and more!

DIVE Magazine is created with some of the best writing and underwater photography in the world. Much more than a simple guide to the latest widgets for your scuba gear, we explore in-depth (pun absolutely intended) stories from the world's oceans, from the pristine reefs of remote islands to the devastating consequences of unsustainable human activity. We produce four art-quality coffee-table print publications each year, plus an app and webviewer through which you can access all of our latest content and more than 100 of our back-issues in digital format.
