WINTER 2025 - NEVER STOP LEARNING

Letter from the Editor

As we ring in the dawn of 2025 with DIVE's Winter magazine, it's worth remembering just how lucky and how privileged we are to be able to visit the underwater realm.

This issue covers some of those themes as Jenny Stock dives with three teenage Filipino girls who have embarked on an inspirational Young Dive Ambassadors programme run by Atlantis Dumaguete, and Graeme Green speaks to ocean campaigner Cristina Mittlemeier about the work she engages in to try and save its inhabitants.

We have accumulated much knowledge about our oceans - and diving - over the last century, but new discoveries often remind us how little we really know, which is why we must never stop learning.

Happy New Year and best wishes for 2025,

Graeme Gourlay, publisher

OCEAN INSPIRATION

Cristina Mittermeier has spent much of her life working to protect the world's oceans - but the creatures that live beneath the waves don't always appreciate her efforts. Graeme Green talks to her about close calls with ocean giants, her new book Hope, and her favourite dive spots around the world.

DISCOVERING ATLANTIS

Atlantis Dumaguete is one of The Philippines' premier dive resorts, but it also has an unwavering commitment to the education of local youngsters. Jenny Stock talks to three girls who are learning about the underwater world through the joys of diving in one of the most diverse regions of the planet.

CRUSTACEAN CORNWALL

Lobsters are a favourite of many divers - they are also favourites on the dinner plates of many others. Lewis Jeffries documents the drive to make British lobster fisheries sustainable through the National Lobster Hatchery in Padstow, Cornwall, accompanied by some of his fantastic photography.

CORAL CAMEOS

The Coral Triangle is home to the greatest amount of ocean biodiversity in the world. In his latest book, Coral Triangle Cameos, Alan J Powerham focuses on some of the smallest, most interesting critters, accompanied by some of the best underwater photography ever seen - check out some of the highlights in this winter's issue of DIVE.

THE BIGGEST SHOTS

We've seen some amazing underwater photography submitted to our Big Shots photo competition in association with Aggressor Adventures over the last year. Check out the best of the best from 2024, as voted for by readers - and stand by for the next iteration, DIVE's Big Shot Portraits!

AND THERE'S MORE...

Also in this Winter's issue - Mark 'Crowley' Russell talks to musician and author Ross Merrin about his decision to train as a BDMLR Marine Mammal Medic, and espouses the merits of Continuing Diver Education in his regular Dive Skills column; Jenny Stock reviews the Insta360 X4 360° action camera and we feature an extract and review of Lasse Spang Olsen's The Diver and the Cook - the incredible true story of a sailor rescued from a sunken boat by a team of commercial divers.
