Winter 2024 magazine preview

Letter from the Editor

As we head into winter, our latest magazine is filled with warmth and colour, from the absolutely kaleidoscopic pictures of our most recent Big Shot underwater photography competition to the vibrant, tragic mating dance of Australia's giant cuttlefish and the rich coral of the Keys of America's Sunshine State.

Every now and then you also need to expect the unexpected, such as the chance of a chunky but graceful manatee turning up while you're diving around Mexico's Riviera Maya, and posing for some fantastic photographs.

The launch happens to coincide with Black Friday - so if you haven't already done so, now is the time to take advantage of our best discount ever!

Best wishes,

Graeme Gourlay, publisher

The Florida Keys are part of the third largest barrier reef system in the world – and they’ve seen some tough times – but Dutch photographer Raymond Wennekes found an abundance of vibrant and healthy coral, some fascinating reef restoration and conservation projects plus an awesome array of wrecks.

Manatees really don’t fit the description of 'mermaids' once afforded them, but there is something about the poise and grace of Mexico’s sea cows that makes you realise why ancient mariners may have made that mistake. Mark ‘Crowley’ Russell tells the tale, accompanied by Valentina Cucchiara’s beautiful images.

Australia's giant cuttlefish spend their whole lives preparing for their final dance – the one time they get to show their true colours and impress potential mates before the colours fade, forever. Artist Francesa Page reports, photographs and illustrates one of the greatest spectacles of the ocean realm.

The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife's reputation as an inexpensive holiday destination just does not do justice to the grandeur of its spectacular underwater volcanic landscape. Jo Caird explores the island's hidden ancient lava flows, with some stunning photography by Steve Pretty.

DIVE’s Big Shot Kaleidoscope underwater photo competition definitely lived up to its name! Check out the spectacularly colourful winning photograph and highly-commended runners-up as they were meant to be seen – on the beautifully glossy art-quality stock of DIVE’s print magazine.

Also in this issue of DIVE: Mark ‘Crowley’ Russell gives some pointers on what to expect from night diving, we report on Dominica's sperm whale sanctuary; an update on the MPB Geographical video awards and another weird and wonderful denizen of the deep from DIVE’s Miscellany of Marine Curios.
