Autumn 2025 magazine preview

AUTUMN 2025 - BLUE CORRIDORS

Humanity’s relationship with whales has been a complex one, from hunting them to a point from which it was thought they might not recover, to an extraordinary amount of important scientific research.

In this issue, we explore that relationship as Josef and Lenka Litt share their experience swimming with pygmy blue whales, and Steve Pretty delves into the science of whale song with Richard Sabin, principal curator of mammals at the Natural History Museum.

We also take a look at Aqaba's underwater military museum, the effect that Jaws had on shark populations, and take a journey on board the Turks & Caicos Aggressor, plus the winners of our latest Big Shots competition.

Best wishes,

Jo Caird, Editor

TIMOR-LESTE'S PYGMY GIANTS

Every year, hundreds of pygmy blue whales pass by Timor-Leste on their migration route to Australia. Josef and Lenka Litt were afforded the chance to swim with a mammal that is pygmy by name, but giant by nature.

SHARK-INFESTED WATERS!

The Turks & Caicos were once the haunt of the Caribbean's most fearsome Pirates, but they are also surrounded by glorious coral reefs and rather unfearsome sharks. Jenny Stock took her camera on board Aggressor Adventures' Turks & Caicos Aggressor II to check out the islands' treasures!

50 YEARS OF JAWS

Steven Spielberg's movie Jaws, based on Peter Benchley's book of the same name, has often been cited as the reason behind the decimation of great white sharks - but was it really? Melissa Hobson takes a look at the mark the movie left, and why its author became a lifelong shark conservationist.

MILITARY DIVING

Aqaba's beautiful and easy-to-dive coral reefs are already a draw for divers, but it's often overlooked compared to Egypt's much more expansive reefscape. Anthony Leydet explores one option that other Red Sea dive spots don't have, however, a purposefully sunk military museum, complete with tanks, helicopters and aircraft.

THE SOUND OF SCIENCE

Sound travels much further and much faster underwater than it does above the surface, and in an environment where even the best visibility isn't very far at all, is much more critical for survival. Steve Pretty talks to Natural History Museum curator Richard Sabin about the extraordinary world of underwater sound.

PATTERNS & TEXTURES

As always, our Big Shot Patterns & Textures underwater photo competition produced some outstanding entries, from super-macro shots of coral polyps to the complex markings of giant sharks. Check out all the winners and highly commended entries here, plus news of our Best Big Shots of 2025 competition...

THE FUTURE OF DIVING

Earlier this year, Garmin launched the Descent S1 buoy, a sonar-based communications device that enables diver tracking and two-way communication between the surface and the depths over a 100 metre radius. Mark 'Crowley' Russell dived with it, and reviews how the scuba diving world just changed.
