Subject: District 10 Mid-November Newsletter

Dear Neighbors,

The holiday season is the perfect time of year to reflect on all we are thankful for in our lives. I am grateful for the honor of representing you and for your willingness to invest in our community.

Earlier this month, Austin Independent School District residents overwhelmingly agreed that all of our children deserve to go to school in an environment that supports their learning. I am proud of the high level of voter engagement we saw in District 10 for the bond election. Every school in AISD will see some form of improvement or benefit. Details about each school’s improvement projects can be found at https://www.aecomconnect.com/AISD/bondscenario.html. I’ve also put together a list of improvements coming to District 10 AISD schools, which can be found here

This week, I hope everyone enjoys time with their families and loved ones and is able to rest up for the busy weeks ahead. Happy Thanksgiving!

Kind regards,

Alison Alter
Council Member, District 10

Aquatics Master Plan Meeting Reminder

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, the Aquatic Master Plan Task Force has scheduled additional community meetings at the request of residents who were unable to attend previous meetings. The last of these meetings will be on Nov. 29 at the Lamar Senior Activity Center. This meeting is the final in-person opportunity for residents to give feedback on the master plan before the task force makes its recommendations. The agenda for the meetings will be posted here. Previous meeting have addressed topics outlined in the resolution including equity, sustainability, funding, and site-suitability.

2018 Bond Town Halls

The Bond Election Advisory Task Force is seeking public input in advance of offering its recommendations to Council for a bond package to go to voters in 2018. Council specifically directed City staff and the task force to focus on funding efforts to address flooding, affordable housing, mobility, high-capacity transit, parks, libraries, and existing infrastructure. City departments identified more than $3 billion in needs during the next five years. From that list, City staff developed a $640 million bond package to serve as a starting point for the task force to consider.

While the task force develops its Council recommendations for the bond package, its 13 appointed members want to better understand what City infrastructure needs are most important to Austin residents.

To accomplish this task, the Task Force has scheduled several town halls throughout the city:

     Nov. 28 – University Hills Branch Library, 4721 Loyola Lane – 6:30-8:30 p.m.
     Nov. 29 – ACC South Campus, 1820 W. Stassney Lane – 6:30-8:30 p.m.
     Nov. 30 – Carver Museum, 1165 Angelina St. – 6:30-8:30 p.m.
     Dec. 4 – Spicewood Springs Library, 8637 Spicewood Springs Road – 6:30-8:30 p.m.
     Dec. 5 – Northwest Recreation Center, 2913 Northland Drive – 6:30pm-8:00pm
   •   Dec. 7 – Hampton Branch Library at Oak Hill, 5125 Convict Hill Road – 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Additionally, the task force and City staff have launched an online survey and a bond simulator. Residents also will be able to call Austin 3-1-1 to provide their feedback. The City currently is developing a language access plan to ensure non-English proficient speakers can provide input into this process as well.

More information about the task force can be found on the City’s website at https://www.austintexas.gov/content/bond-election-advisory-task-force. To learn more about the task force’s five working groups and their meeting schedules, visit http://austintexas.gov/2018Bond
Great Hills Market Meeting

I was pleased to see the high engagement from neighbors at our first community meeting regarding the requested rezoning and proposed redevelopment of the Great Hills Market area. In order to give the community adequate time to discuss and understand the proposal, I arranged for first reading on the rezoning case to be postponed to Dec. 7. My District 10 Office has scheduled two supplemental meetings before the item comes to Council to allow for additional conversations between the developers and the neighbors. This gives residents more opportunities to provide input and negotiate potential conditions on the redevelopment.
