19 FOODS THAT ARE GOOD FOR YOUR LIVER

Do You Know

Maintaining a balanced diet and ensuring that your nutrition is something that you focus on can be an essential part of cleansing the liver, especially if you have a pre-existing liver condition.

The best thing that you can do to make sure that your liver is working at an optimal level involves limiting your intake of unhealthy foods and replacing them with a number of liver-friendly foods.

Here are some of our personal favourites

  1. Green leafy vegetables

When it comes to helping your liver function in the most efficient way that it can, there is no better option than consuming green leafy vegetables. We all know that leafy greens are healthy given that they are packed to the literal brim with vitamins A, C, and K, but did you know that your liver appreciates them just as much as the rest of your body does?

They work wonders, regardless of whether you would consider green leafy vegetables to be kale, arugula, spinach, or collards. You simply have to choose one that you like to eat.

The way in which green leafy vegetables and the liver is quite unique because it actually comes down to the amount of chlorophyll that the leaves contain. Chlorophyll is a substance that can help to purify the blood that your liver has to process. Leafy greens can also help to neutralize some of the harmful environmental toxins that your liver would otherwise have to try and deal with, like pesticides and chemicals.

2. Turmeric

Turmeric is a type of treasured spice among people who like to detox.

The health kick of recent years has also made it a popular addition to the shopping lists of a large number of people. It has actually been used as a type of medicine for approximately four millennia, being the literal strongman of both Ayurveda and Chinese medicine thanks to the strong anti-inflammatory properties that it contains. This is not an outdated thought as modern medical studies have also proven that it can cure and help with a number of different illnesses. It should not come as a surprise that turmeric can also help the liver. It does this by flushing out a large number of the normal toxins that build up in our bodies over time, meaning that our livers have to do a little bit less work. Turmeric can also prevent fat from accumulating in the liver, a problem that could lead to conditions that are difficult to manage, like fatty liver and cirrhosis.

3. Garlic

Garlic is a type of food that most people will not think of when they initially think of foods that can benefit their health, putting it in the same line-up as salt and pepper. Before you do that, you should know that garlic actually contains sulfur compounds that are capable of activating liver enzymes. This is something that can help with the overall digestive process in your body and it can also help to flush toxins out of your body. But, garlic actually has another trick hiding somewhere. It contains a large amount of allicin and selenium, nutrients that can quite literally nourish and cleanse your entire body and the blood that flows through it. Allicin works because it is capable of warding off any invaders that might be attacking your immune system, and selenium works because it is a type of naturally detoxifying mineral. This makes them a perfect pair because they help to minimize the amount of work that your liver needs to do. It is worth noting that whole garlic cloves work much better than any other alternatives if you are looking for foods that are liver-friendly.

4. Brassica vegetables

When we talk about Brassica vegetables as an umbrella term, we are actually talking about a family of plants that is more commonly known as the mustard family. This family includes everything from weeds to the popular vegetables that can be found in most supermarkets, including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, choy sum, and turnips. All of which are significant sources of nutrients.

They are all capable of stimulating your immune system and decreasing your risk of certain types of cancer. The best thing about consuming any of these brassica vegetables is that they are known to increase the levels of the natural antioxidant enzymes inside of your body. This means that they help our bodies by getting rid of dangerous environmental toxins and toxins that have accumulated over time. This lowers the number of toxins that our liver has to take on, helping to keep it healthy.

5. Lemon and citrus fruits

Any fruits that contain high levels of vitamin C are fantastic because they can help to flush environmental toxins from the body. Lemons, in particular, can also help to lower the amount of cholesterol that is present in the liver, but most people like to avoid the bitterness of lemons. A great way to get around this is by adding a glass of lemon water to your morning routine, something that will eventually become a natural part of your day that you do not have to think about. But, that only scratches the surface of what lemons can do.

They actually aid the digestion process by helping to break down any food that is present in the stomach. This occurs because lemons are incredibly acidic and because they stimulate the stomach in a way that leads to the production of more digestive fluids. In this scenario, your liver has to work less because your stomach is doing more. A win-win situation.

6. Broccoli

Chances are, you already know just how much eating broccoli can be beneficial for your body. It contains a high level of both antioxidants and chlorophyll, while also being high in fiber. The fact that broccoli contains chlorophyll is an important quality when it comes to hunting for liver-friendly foods. This is because chlorophyll can help to cleanse the blood inside of our bodies and given that our liver is essentially a giant blood filtration system, this means that our liver has to do a lot less work. But, broccoli also contains something known as glucosinolates, a natural component that exists in a number of different plants.

These can help us and our bodies because they prompt the liver to produce more enzymes, aiding the liver by removing dangerous toxins while also helping our body digest food.

7. Avocado

Avocado is the literal superfood of the modern world. You do not have to look very far to see photographs of avocado on toast and people drinking their morning lattes out of avocados.

But, this trend says a lot in which the modern world focuses on health. Consuming avocados provides our bodies with a range of different vitamins and minerals, all of which can significantly improve the overall health of our livers. They are capable of doing this because of their anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. Avocados contain a rather unique type of antioxidant known as glutathione, one that most people consider being a super-antioxidant. This antioxidant is brilliant because it can filter harmful toxins out of our bodies, protecting the cells in our livers from the damage that those toxins could otherwise cause.

8. Walnuts

Generally speaking, nuts are high in both nutrients and fats, making them a good option for occasional snacking, but you should still try not to overindulge in them.

Walnuts in particular also contain a high level of beneficial plant compounds.

The antioxidants inside of walnuts are essential for people who have pre-existing liver conditions because they can help to neutralise the free radicals that could otherwise cause mayhem among the cells in the liver. One of the most dangerous concerns that arise when it comes to common liver problems is a condition known as fatty liver disease.

But, nuts could be the answer to that too. An observational study was done on a total of 106 people with a type of fatty liver disease that was not related to alcohol consumption.

The study found that people who consumed nuts had higher levels of liver enzymes, meaning that their livers were capable of filtering more toxins.

9. Beets and Carrots

Colourful vegetables are always a little bit eye-catching, and we all know that one of the easiest ways to make sure that we are eating healthily is to try to make sure that we eat ‘all of the colours of the rainbow’, or so to speak. When you think about colourful vegetables, beets and carrots are vegetables that should appear pretty high on the list. Beets, in particular, are known to be a superfood for your entire body as a whole, as well as your liver. Have you ever noticed that beets are similar in colour to the very liquid that your liver must deal with regularly, your blood? It is rather funny that they are because beets are incredibly good at removing the toxins that can be found in your blood.

This helps your liver and the way that it functions because it means that your liver has a lot less work to do. Eating carrots regularly have a similar effect because carrots contain a high level of something known as glutathione, a type of strong antioxidant.

The antioxidant itself is really good at cleansing and detoxifying the liver, so again, consuming carrots means that the liver has much less work to do.

10. Apples

Apples are one of the best liver-friendly types of food that you should focus on if you are trying to improve the overall health and productivity of your liver. They are rich in something that is known as pectin, a substance that is naturally contained within the primary cell walls of a range of different plants. It is best described as a type of soluble fibre and it can help remove a range of different environmental toxins from the blood, including chemicals.

This all means that your liver is left with less of a workload if apples are taking some of that workload away. It is also worth noting that Granny Smith apples contain a high level of malic acid. Malic acid is something that can bind to the toxic metals that can accumulate in our bodies, reducing the overall risk of their toxicity. This means that by eating apples we can really help our livers. But, in reality, any type of apple would be a good option.

But, you do still have to be careful as a lot of commercially sourced apples have been grown in places where pesticides are present, giving your liver even more dangerous toxins to try and clean up. You can avoid this situation by purchasing apples that are organic.

11. Alternative grains

In the modern world, it is normal to eat grains like wheat and rye. Unfortunately, these can be quite a burden for our livers to try and process. Instead of eating these, you should consider eating things like quinoa, millet, buckwheat, and lentils. Lentils, in particular, are rich in fibre and are a source of plant-based protein. Consuming too much protein can be disastrous as our livers struggle to process a lot of protein, but lentils are much easier for our livers to handle and they are easy for our bodies to digest.

12. Cabbage

Cabbage is a really healthy type of cruciferous vegetable, just like broccoli.

It is considered to be a liver-friendly food because it contains a high concentration of phytonutrients, chemical compounds that are amazing when it comes to helping the liver flush dangerous toxins out of the blood. Phytonutrients have been proven to help with the removal of harmful substances, including pesticides, chemicals, prescription, and non-prescription drugs, metals that have accumulated over time, and even carcinogens.

Cabbage is also considered to be a healthy option because it can lower the amount of cholesterol that is present in our bodies. Studies have also been done that have proven that the intake of cabbage decreases the risk of a handful of different cardiovascular diseases.

This all explains why cabbage is commonly considered to be one of the healthiest vegetables that we can eat. Other important cruciferous vegetables that act in a similar way when ingested include cauliflower and daikon.

13. Artichoke

An artichoke is a fibrous vegetable that has recently made a name for itself as a liver superfood. It contains a phenolic acid compound that is commonly known as cynarin, and this compound can help the way in which our digestive system works. It does this in two ways. Firstly, it promotes the discharge of bile within our bodies, leaving our liver with less work to do. Secondly, it stimulates the production of bile inside the liver itself.

But, the most interesting thing about artichokes was found during a double-blind clinical trial that involved people who were suffering from a non-alcoholic form of fatty liver disease.

The study contained two groups. The members of the first group were taking tablets that contained the extracts of artichokes, while the members of the second group were taking a placebo. By the end of the study, the group who had been taking the tablets that contained the artichoke extracts showed lower amounts of both cholesterol and triglycerides than those not taking the tablets. But, the study also found that elevated levels of liver enzymes dropped dramatically. In fact, the levels almost halved in most cases.

14. Kale

When we start to look at all of the different ways in which we can help our own livers, one of the methods that always springs to mind is to minimize the number of toxins in our bloodstream. This lessens the burden that we place on our liver. We can do this by eating foods that can help to detoxify our blood, like kale. As a plant, kale contains a high concentration of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is known to purify the blood and assist liver function. Kale is also known to help reduce inflammation, making it a perfect option for people who have pre-existing liver conditions. In most liver conditions, inflammation plays a big role and it can make the conditions incredibly painful.

15. Brussels sprouts

Another fantastic example of a healthy cruciferous vegetable that can really help the liver is brussels sprouts, a food that is traditionally eaten around the Christmas holiday.

They contain a high level of glucosinolates, components that are naturally found in a lot of different plants, including mustard, cabbage and horseradish. These glucosinolates help a lot with the detoxification process. Aiding the detoxification process is really important because our livers actually have a lot of work to do. If they have to remove fewer toxins, or if the toxins become easier to remove, then our livers can work more to handle other tasks.

These include processing vital nutrients, regulating the composition of our blood and metabolising medication. This is an important factor to consider if you have to take prescription medications.

16. Tomatoes

Tomatoes also contain glutathione, just like a number of the other foods that are present on our list of liver-friendly foods do. Remember that, as an outstanding type of antioxidant, glutathione can really help when it comes to removing toxins from the body. But, tomatoes also contain something that is more important than glutathione when it comes to the health of our livers, lycopene. High levels of lycopene can be found in tomatoes. It is a bright red phytochemical. This particular phytochemical can also be found in red carrots, watermelons, and papayas. But, it isn’t found in some red-colored fruits, like strawberries.

Lycopene is important because it can be used to prevent several different types of cancer.

A study that was done at Tufts University found that lycopene is particularly effective at treating both liver disease and cancer of the liver.

17. Spinach

Spinach is definitely a type of food that you should be swiftly adding to your current diet if you currently have a liver condition, as long as that liver condition has not been caused by alcohol. But, spinach can also provide people with all of the same benefits that other leafy green vegetables can. Spinach is a great option for people who have liver conditions because it is high in vitamin E.A study that was done at the Cape Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Ohio found out just how important vitamin E really is.

The study was done on mice who were suffering from fat accumulation in the liver and inflammation of the liver. One group was given vitamin E supplements, while the other group was deprived of vitamin E. In the group with the supplements, a lot of the symptoms got better, the opposite can be said for the other group.

This study confirms that there is a correlation between vitamin E deficiency and fatty liver disease.

18. Asparagus

If you are looking to keep your liver functioning in a way that keeps your body healthy, asparagus is one of the vegetables that you might want to consider integrating into your diet. One of the reasons for this is because asparagus has diuretic qualities, meaning that it can be used to help flush toxins out of your body, lessening the workload of your liver and allowing your liver, kidneys, and digestive system to function well as a whole.

Asparagus is also known to increase the levels of ADH and ALDH that are present in your liver, both of which are types of enzymes that are responsible for metabolizing ethanol.

This means that asparagus could be the key to getting rid of a hangover, and it can offer your liver a little bit of protection from the toxic components of alcohol.

19. Olive oil

One of the easiest things to integrate into your diet if you are attempting to protect the health of your liver is actually olive oil. A lot of studies have been done by research teams in the Middle East, one of which found that a diet that contained olive oil helped to protect a number of rats from herbicide-inflicted liver damage. This did not happen under normal circumstances either, all of the rats were exposed to a toxic herbicide that is known to affect how well the liver can remove toxins. It is also worth considering the fact that olive oil is much healthier than other modern alternatives because it is a type of unsaturated fat and it is high in omega-3 fatty acids. These can actually help reverse oxidative stress to the liver.

This also shows how effective the antioxidant properties of olive oil are.
