GE Halts Supersonic Engine Development

GE Aviation has announced the cessation of work on its Affinity supersonic powerplant, following the shutdown of its sole customer, Aerion. The Reno, Nevada-based company’s decision comes after Aerion’s failure to secure sufficient funds to continue its AS2 program.

GE’s Vision for the Affinity Engine

When GE launched the Affinity engine, it introduced a new class of medium bypass ratio engines designed for both supersonic and subsonic flights. The company had described the Affinity as the first civil supersonic engine in over 55 years, a groundbreaking technology meant to propel the Aerion AS2 into flight. At the time of its unveiling, GE emphasized the engine’s ability to offer exceptional performance at both supersonic speeds over water and subsonic speeds over land, all while complying with existing regulations.

Ambitious Plans Derailed

GE’s collaboration with Aerion began in 2017, with the goal of a design review in 2020, followed by the production of test articles. However, the collapse of Aerion left those plans unfulfilled. Despite this setback, GE confirmed that the engineers involved in the Affinity project have been reassigned to other ventures, with no impact on staffing.

The Supersonic Race Continues

With GE stepping back from the supersonic race, Rolls-Royce is now the leading contender to power Boom’s Overture airliner. Rolls-Royce has been working with Boom to integrate its propulsion systems into the Overture, a project that takes its inspiration from the Concorde era, when Rolls-Royce engines powered the iconic supersonic aircraft. Despite GE’s departure from the Affinity program, the company still holds a partnership with Boom, providing the J85-15 engines for the XB-1 demonstrator, which is expected to take flight soon.

A rival company, Spike Aerospace, has yet to announce the engine choice for its S-512, a twin-engined supersonic jet set for certification by 2028.

PHI Expands Fleet with AW189 Helicopter Deal

PHI Group has strengthened its fleet strategy with a new agreement for up to 12 AW189 super-medium helicopters from Leonardo Helicopters. This move further diversifies the US offshore operator’s fleet, as it moves away from reliance on the Sikorsky S-92 model.

Details of the New Deal

The agreement, which includes both firm orders and options, will see deliveries of the AW189 helicopters begin in 2025. The AW189s will be configured for offshore oil and gas transport missions, expanding PHI’s capabilities in the sector.

Strategic Shift Toward Super-Medium Aircraft

The decision to add AW189s to its fleet follows persistent issues with the availability of the S-92, notably caused by parts shortages. PHI had previously indicated its interest in super-medium models, noting the potential of the Airbus H175 as a viable replacement for much of the S-92 fleet. This latest order reflects PHI’s long-term commitment to expanding its offshore services in response to the anticipated growth in the oil and gas industry.

Support and Training Included

As part of the deal with Leonardo, PHI will also receive comprehensive service support and training solutions for both the AW189 and the AW139, another model already operated by the company. This agreement enhances PHI’s ability to maintain a robust and diverse fleet.

Greece Secures AW139s for Civil Protection

In other helicopter news, Greece has signed a deal for three AW139s to be used in disaster relief and civil protection missions. Set for delivery in 2026, these helicopters will be operated by the country’s fire brigade and based in Attica. Their flexible cabin configurations will allow for rapid adaptation to various mission requirements.

Macquarie Doubles Down on 737 Max Order

Macquarie AirFinance has solidified its commitment to the Boeing 737 Max by placing a direct order for 20 additional 737 Max 8 aircraft. This follow-on order follows the company’s acquisition of a similar number of jets from Kuwaiti lessor ALAFCO, resulting in a total of 40 737 Max aircraft in its portfolio.

Expanding the Aircraft Fleet

The new order, set for delivery between 2029 and 2030, represents a significant step in Macquarie’s long-term fleet expansion strategy. The lessor’s firm orders with aircraft manufacturers have now risen to 86, strengthening its standing in the global aviation market.

Legacy of the ALAFCO Deal

Macquarie previously absorbed a portfolio of 53 jets from ALAFCO in a $2.2 billion deal, including 20 737 Max aircraft that were originally scheduled for delivery to ALAFCO between 2024 and 2026. With this follow-on order, Macquarie continues to bolster its position in the market, ensuring it has a robust lineup of the latest, most fuel-efficient aircraft available.

Fuel Efficiency and Growth Expectations

The 737 Max 8 aircraft are equipped with the CFM International Leap-1B engines, offering enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced emissions compared to older models. Macquarie’s move reflects its confidence in the future of the 737 Max and its belief in the continued growth of the aviation industry.

Expanding the Fleet Further

In addition to the 737 Max order, Macquarie has also agreed to a $1 billion acquisition of 23 more aircraft from ALAFCO’s portfolio. With a current fleet of 236 aircraft, Macquarie is positioned to continue its significant expansion in the aviation leasing market.

Airbus Helicopters Prepares for First ACH160 Delivery, Awaiting FAA Approval

Airbus Helicopters is on the verge of delivering the first ACH160, a VIP-configured medium-twin helicopter, following extensive test flights at the manufacturer’s Marignane, France base. The delivery of the first ACH160 is slated for a private operator in the New York area, contingent upon US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval, which is expected in the coming months.

H160 Set for New York Destination

Currently undergoing final tests in Marseille, the ACH160 represents the next step in Airbus's ambitious helicopter development. Despite the excitement surrounding the aircraft, the delivery hinges on obtaining FAA certification, which, despite some delays caused by the pandemic, is expected to proceed smoothly.
