EVA Air Unveils New Premium Economy on 787-9

EVA Air is set to elevate its passenger experience with the launch of a new premium economy product on its Boeing 787-9 fleet. The carrier's latest seat design promises an enhanced experience, debuting on a newly delivered aircraft. This aircraft has already begun commercial operations, flying from Taipei to Jakarta.

A Modern Evolution of Comfort

This new premium economy seating represents the fourth generation of such products offered by the airline since 1992. It will be installed across the airline’s incoming fleet of eight Boeing 787-9s, scheduled for delivery through 2029. While the airline has yet to confirm whether retrofitting will occur on existing aircraft, data shows the airline operates 16 787s, which include a mix of -9s and -10s.

Improved Space and Design

The updated premium economy seats will feature a seat pitch of 42 inches, offering an additional 4 inches of legroom compared to the current offering. Designed for seven-abreast configuration, these new seats promise a more spacious and refined experience. While the manufacturer remains undisclosed, the seat design closely resembles the Z535i model by Safran Seats.

Expanded Routes for Premium Comfort

As more 787-9s join the fleet, EVA Air plans to introduce this upgraded product on key international routes, including Milan, Vienna, and San Francisco, further enhancing its premium service offerings for travelers seeking greater comfort.

SpiceJet Eyes Long-Haul Expansion with Widebody Fleet

SpiceJet has not ruled out the possibility of acquiring widebody aircraft for long-haul routes, as it looks to recover from financial challenges and expand capacity. The airline, known for its low-cost operations, is exploring options to cater to the rising demand in India.

Exploring Future Fleet Options

Currently operating mainly Boeing 737 aircraft, SpiceJet is in discussions with major aircraft manufacturers regarding the potential acquisition of widebody aircraft. These future acquisitions are part of a strategy to strengthen the airline’s long-haul capabilities, with the aim of capitalizing on increasing demand both within India and internationally.

Long-Haul Operations on the Horizon

SpiceJet’s interest in expanding into long-haul operations comes amid a surge in widebody orders from other Indian carriers, including major national airlines. While SpiceJet has limited experience in long-haul operations, the airline previously wet-leased widebody aircraft for repatriation flights during the pandemic.

A Stable Future for SpiceJet

As the airline stabilizes its operations, the addition of widebody aircraft remains a key part of its growth strategy. With the return of its first Boeing 737 Max 8 in late January, SpiceJet is working to strengthen its position in high-demand markets, such as Jeddah and Riyadh, with plans for more 737 Max 8 aircraft to join the fleet in the coming months.

Play Airlines' New Model Shows Early Signs of Recovery

Icelandic low-cost carrier Play has reported a significant full-year loss but remains confident that the overhaul of its business model is yielding early positive results.

The airline recorded a net loss of $66 million for 2024, nearly double the previous year's $35 million, with revenues rising by 4% to $292 million. The weak performance is attributed to a challenging summer, marked by overcapacity in the North Atlantic market and the effects of seismic activity earlier in the year.

Shift in Strategy Shows Promise

Despite the financial losses, Play points to a “positive shift” in its performance during the fourth quarter. The company had announced a major strategic pivot last October, moving away from hub-and-spoke operations to focus on leisure traffic, charter flights, and wet-leasing. This new direction appears to have shown early signs of success by the end of the year.

Focus on Efficiency and Flexible Operations

In the fourth quarter, Play’s revenue dropped by 10% to $59 million due to a reduction in the number of aircraft in operation. However, the carrier improved its operating loss by 23%, and its pre-tax loss also showed improvement. Despite these gains, the net loss widened due to a write-off of deferred tax assets.

Load factor, passenger yields, and unit revenues all increased in the fourth quarter, marking a promising trend.

Growth in New Business Areas

The airline also reported that the point-to-point segment of its network, which focuses on direct flights rather than connecting traffic, turned profitable last year. This segment will account for 30% of its capacity in 2025. The airline’s fleet, consisting of 10 Airbus A320neo-family jets, is in high demand, with Play securing a long-term wet-lease agreement for three aircraft with a European carrier through 2027.

As part of its new strategy, Play plans to operate some of its fleet outside of Iceland, and it aims to finalize the process of obtaining a Maltese Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) by spring. Three or four aircraft will operate under this AOC, flying from other European bases rather than being based in Malta.

Confident Outlook for 2025

The airline’s board believes the changes to its business model will significantly improve its financial performance starting in the second quarter of this year, with no further capital increases expected for the remainder of the year.

Jetcruzer Secures ZeroAvia Propulsion for Electric 500E Aircraft

Jetcruzer International, a U.S.-based aerospace firm, has become the first purchaser of a 600kW electric propulsion system developed by ZeroAvia, a leading low-emission technology provider. This groundbreaking deal marks a significant step toward the development of Jetcruzer’s electric aircraft, the 500E, which aims to transform aviation with a focus on sustainability.

Electric Flight Testing Takes Shape

Jetcruzer, located in California, plans to use the ZeroAvia propulsion system for extensive flight testing as part of its 500E aircraft program. The 500E is envisioned as an electric version of the Jetcruzer 500, a once-abandoned push-prop aircraft project originally developed with a Pratt & Whitney PT6 engine. After being acquired by Jetcruzer in 2017, the aircraft was redesigned, and the 500E project was launched.

A Vision for Sustainable Aviation

The 500E represents a bold shift toward electric flight. The aircraft will feature a six-seat hydrogen-electric configuration, with plans to enter service in 2028, followed by the 1250E model in 2030. The integration of ZeroAvia’s advanced propulsion system, which includes four 200kW bidirectional inverters and a direct-drive motor capable of reaching 2,200rpm, will be a key component in these innovations.

A Bright Future for Electric Aviation

ZeroAvia’s 600kW propulsion system is expected to be delivered to Jetcruzer in spring. This move further strengthens ZeroAvia’s position as a leader in the electric aviation sector, with the company also producing these systems for third-party customers at a new facility in Everett, Washington. The partnership underscores the growing demand for cleaner, more efficient aircraft solutions, with Jetcruzer poised to lead the charge in this sustainable aviation revolution.

FAA Greenlights Archer’s Pilot Training Program for Air Taxis

Archer Aviation has reached a key milestone with the approval of its pilot training program by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This certification allows the company to begin training pilots for its Midnight electric air taxi, advancing the aircraft toward commercial operations.

Certified Training Facility for Electric Aviation

The FAA's approval under Part 141 rules confirms that Archer's training academy meets the rigorous standards for structured pilot education. This follows a similar achievement by Archer’s competitor, Joby Aviation. With this approval, Archer is now equipped to train and qualify pilots for its groundbreaking electric aircraft.

Midnight Air Taxi on Track

The Midnight air taxi, designed to carry up to four passengers, is set to serve short-range urban routes, covering distances between 20 and 50 miles at speeds up to 130 knots (241 km/h). Additionally, the aircraft is being developed for potential defense applications. Archer is actively pursuing FAA type certification for the Midnight, a complex and costly process necessary for its operational debut.

Expansion Amid Financial Challenges

In addition to the pilot training approval, Archer has secured an operating certificate under FAA Part 135 rules and a repair station certification under Part 145. Despite financial pressures within the electric air taxi sector, Archer continues to advance its development, even while reporting significant losses. However, the company has bolstered its position with substantial funding to support ongoing operations and progress.
