Etihad Airways Sees Record Profit Surge

Etihad Airways achieves record-breaking performance

Etihad Airways has reported an impressive rise in its annual net profit, reaching Dhs1.7 billion ($476 million), marking a significant milestone for the Abu Dhabi-based airline. This achievement reflects a remarkable 25% growth in revenues, which reached Dhs25.3 billion, alongside a 32% surge in passenger numbers.

Significant improvements in operational efficiency

The airline attributes its success to substantial enhancements in operational efficiency. Both overall unit costs, including and excluding fuel, saw reductions during the year. Additionally, EBITDA grew by 32%, reaching Dhs4.6 billion.

Substantial reduction in finance costs

Etihad also benefited from a considerable decrease in net finance costs, nearly Dhs1 billion, contributing to the boost in profitability. The airline’s previous net profit stood at Dhs523 million.

Fleet expansion and network growth

As part of its strategy, Etihad expanded its fleet to a total of 97 aircraft, adding 12 new planes, including six Airbus A321neos, and reintroducing a fifth A380. The airline also strengthened its global reach by launching 20 new destinations, including cities like Boston, Bali, Nice, and Nairobi. At least 10 of these routes are set to begin in the near future.

Cargo revenue up 24%

Etihad's cargo division also experienced growth, with revenues increasing by 24% to Dhs4.2 billion, driven by higher yields in the latter part of the year.

Wisk Aero Advances Autonomous Air Taxi Testing

Wisk Aero pushes forward with wind-tunnel testing

Wisk Aero, a leading developer of autonomous air taxis, is advancing its testing efforts with a subscale model of its pilotless aircraft at Boeing’s V/STOL Wind Tunnel (BVWT) facility in Philadelphia. This aerodynamics testing program is set to include hundreds of test runs, providing critical data for the development of Wisk's full-sized air taxi.

Testing to support full-size prototype flights

The data collected during these tests will play a crucial role in the design of Wisk’s full-scale aircraft, directly feeding into the aerodynamic simulations that will support the flight-test and certification process. These simulations will help in planning for full-scale test flights, evaluating failure scenarios, and ensuring flight safety.

Boeing's advanced wind tunnel facility

Boeing’s BVWT facility, designed specifically for vertical-lift testing, allows for highly flexible simulations. The test section can be reconfigured for various flight conditions, from hover and low-speed transitions to higher-speed flight, enabling accurate testing of the air taxi’s capabilities across different flight regimes.

Gen 6 air taxi and future plans

Wisk is working toward launching passenger-carrying, autonomous flights with its “Gen 6” air taxi before the decade ends. The company is currently assembling its first full-size prototype in Mountain View, California. This prototype marks the first step in a series of full-size models that will undergo flight tests to inform the certification of the Gen 6 aircraft.

Boeing’s support and facilities

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Boeing, Wisk Aero has benefited from the expertise and resources of its parent company, utilizing Boeing’s facilities to refine its designs and advance its air taxi technology.

Subscale model testing for precise data

The subscale model, approximately one-quarter the size of the Gen 6, is being used to simulate various flight conditions, such as extreme angles of attack and side-slip during hover. This data will provide a strong foundation for further refining the full-scale aircraft’s aerodynamics and flight performance.

Dubai Aerospace to Acquire Nordic Aviation Capital for $2 Billion

Approval of $2 Billion Acquisition

Shareholders of Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) have approved the company’s acquisition by Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE), a deal valued at over $2 billion, including outstanding debt. The acquisition received strong support, with 85% of shareholders voting in favor. The transaction is set to close within the first half of the year, pending regulatory approval.

NAC’s Fleet and Clientele

NAC’s portfolio, at the close of the previous year, included more than 230 owned and committed aircraft. The company has established relationships with around 60 customers worldwide, enhancing its appeal to DAE. These assets played a significant role in the acquisition's attractiveness.

DAE’s Expansive Aircraft Portfolio

DAE’s aircraft portfolio is considerably larger, comprising 506 aircraft. This includes 223 Boeing models, 216 Airbus jets, and 67 ATRs. Of this total, 329 aircraft are owned, 110 are managed, and 67 are committed for future delivery, reinforcing DAE's position in the industry.

Strategic Industry Move

This acquisition will further strengthen DAE’s presence in the aviation market, expanding its fleet and customer base significantly. The integration of NAC’s assets into DAE’s existing portfolio marks a major strategic move within the aviation leasing industry.

BAE Systems Invests $65 Million in Electric Aviation Expansion

New Facility in New York

BAE Systems is expanding its electric aviation capabilities with a new technology development and production site in Endicott, New York. This strategic expansion, backed by an $8.5 million state tax credit, represents a $65 million investment by the aerospace firm. The new facility will focus on the development of high-voltage energy storage technologies to support the growing electric aircraft market.

Increased Capacity for Energy Storage Systems

The expansion will add 150,000 square feet to BAE’s existing Endicott site. This additional space will house new pilot production lines, fully automated high-volume manufacturing capabilities, and a cutting-edge engineering laboratory designed for testing battery cells and energy storage systems.

Long-Term Vision for Electric Aviation

While the focus has shifted from electric air taxis to hybrid-electric propulsion in recent years, BAE’s commitment to the electric aircraft segment remains strong. The company sees electric systems as essential to the future of aviation, positioning itself at the forefront of this market with its expanding infrastructure and expertise.

A Forward-Looking Commitment

This expansion strengthens BAE’s role in the commercial aircraft electrification sector, with the company planning to complete the project in the coming years. The new site will enable enhanced energy storage system development, increasing production capacity and supporting future electric aircraft programs.

Airbus Eyes 820 Aircraft Deliveries in 2025

Airbus forecasts a target of 820 commercial aircraft deliveries for this year, surpassing the 766 units delivered in 2024.

This forecast comes as the airframer disclosed its full-year financial results. The rise in deliveries for the previous year contributed to a 6% increase in revenues for the commercial aircraft division, which reached €50.6 billion.

In 2024, Airbus delivered 57 A350s, 32 A330s, 602 A320neo-family jets, and 75 A220 aircraft, while generating adjusted earnings of €5.09 billion, marking a 5.7% increase.

Impact of Higher Deliveries and Investments

The company attributes the rise in revenue to the higher number of deliveries, though this was somewhat offset by investments made for future production and development.

With net orders totaling 826 aircraft, Airbus’s order backlog stood at 8,658 at the end of the year, signaling strong demand across its product range.

Outlook for 2025 and Potential Challenges

Airbus's outlook for this year remains cautiously optimistic, with expectations for a “broadly neutral” impact on adjusted earnings from the integration of Spirit AeroSystems' work packages. Compensation from Spirit is anticipated to mitigate any adverse effects on free cash flow.

The company assumes no additional disruptions to global trade or the supply chain and has excluded potential impacts from new tariffs that could emerge under the current U.S. administration.
