This positive growth occurred despite a reduction in fares following the reintroduction of market capacity.
Solid Ancillary Revenue Growth AirAsia, in the final stages of its separation from parent Capital A, recorded a 5.5% year-on-year increase in ancillary revenue per passenger, contributing to a 5.8% rise in its annual ancillary revenue.
AirAsia X saw even more dramatic results, with a 31% year-on-year increase in its quarterly ancillary revenue, while revenue per passenger grew by 9%.
Fares Decline as Market Recovers The boost in ancillary earnings helped counterbalance the decline in average fares for both carriers. AirAsia experienced a 5% drop in fares due to lower prices on newly launched routes, while AirAsia X saw a more significant 20% decrease in fares as capacity returned to the market.
Nevertheless, both carriers remained profitable during what they termed the "seasonally busiest" period.
Impressive Financial Results AirAsia reported an EBITDA of MYR1.2 billion ($269 million) for the quarter, marking a fourfold increase compared to the previous year. AirAsia X also posted a positive EBITDA of MYR120 million, a 74% rise year on year.
Revenue growth was a key driver: AirAsia saw a year-on-year increase of 8%, bringing its total to MYR4.8 billion. This was largely due to a 9% increase in passenger numbers and a 10% growth in capacity. AirAsia X also saw a 7% rise in quarterly revenue, reaching MYR872 million, fueled by more flights and passengers.
Foreign Exchange Losses Impact Profits Despite the overall positive performance, AirAsia faced significant foreign exchange losses, leading to a net loss of MYR2.2 billion for the quarter, compared to a loss of MYR322 million the previous year.
On the other hand, AirAsia X saw a slight drop in net profit, with MYR22.6 million for the quarter, down from MYR27 million the previous year due to minor foreign exchange losses.
Annual Financial Performance For the full year, AirAsia reported a positive EBITDA of MYR3.15 billion, a twofold increase from the previous year, with revenue growing 39% to MYR18.9 billion. AirAsia X, however, saw a 30% decrease in its annual EBITDA, totaling MYR461 million, primarily due to the reversal of provisions from the prior financial year. However, its revenue grew 28% year-on-year, reaching MYR3.2 billion. | | | | Avion Express Expands with Philippines Operation | | | | Avia Solutions Group is setting up a new regional branch of Avion Express in the Philippines, aiming to meet the increasing demand for seasonal aircraft capacity within the Asia-Pacific region. This move is expected to strengthen Avion Express's presence in a rapidly growing market.
Capitalizing on Post-Pandemic Growth The Philippines is experiencing a robust recovery post-pandemic, driving increased demand for air travel. However, the recovery has been coupled with supply-chain challenges, which have created pressure on local airlines. To meet these challenges, Avion Express Philippines is navigating the final regulatory processes to obtain its air operator’s certificate and necessary licenses, paving the way for smoother operations.
Strategic Base at Clark Airport The new branch of Avion Express will be strategically located at Clark Airport, a key international gateway situated just outside Manila. This location will help ensure optimal access to various parts of the Philippines while reducing congestion at the capital’s primary airport. The carrier plans to operate a fleet of Airbus A320 jets, specifically designed to serve the region’s growing peak-season demand, making it an essential asset for local airlines.
Expanding Regional Presence Avia Solutions Group, already well-established in the Asia-Pacific market with carriers like BBN Airlines Indonesia and Thai SmartLynx, continues to expand its footprint. The company is also working on developing a Malaysian affiliate, complementing its UK-based Ascend Airways. This regional expansion is poised to further solidify Avia Solutions Group’s competitive position in the international aviation market. | | | | | | | | | | Emirates Expands Asian Network with New Routes | | | | Emirates is further expanding its footprint in Asia with the introduction of three new routes, including the Chinese city of Shenzhen. The new services also encompass destinations in Vietnam and Cambodia, further connecting the region with Emirates' global network through Bangkok.
New Service to Shenzhen Emirates will launch daily flights to Shenzhen, utilizing the Boeing 777-300ER, which boasts 332 seats spread across four classes. This new route adds Shenzhen to the list of Emirates’ Chinese destinations, joining Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, and offers enhanced connectivity to the region.
Connecting Asia with New Destinations Alongside Shenzhen, Emirates will introduce a four-times-weekly service to Da Nang in Vietnam starting in June, along with three weekly flights to Siem Reap in Cambodia from the same period. Both routes will be connected via Bangkok, with two-class Boeing 777-300ERs, featuring 421 seats, ensuring efficient service to these growing markets.
Strengthening Regional Ties This expansion underscores Emirates’ commitment to strengthening ties across Asia. The new routes complement the airline’s existing services to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, as well as Phnom Penh in Cambodia, consolidating its regional presence and enhancing travel options for passengers in these dynamic markets. | | | | Elite Air Taxi Software Cleared for Launch | | | | FAA Clears Cutting-Edge Operations Suite A major step toward high-frequency urban air mobility has been achieved. A leading electric air taxi developer has received regulatory approval to deploy its proprietary operational software, setting the stage for a revolutionary on-demand aviation service. The clearance enables the use of a comprehensive software suite designed to manage air taxi networks with the speed and precision required for urban-scale operations.
Advanced System for Seamless Urban Flights The newly authorized ElevateOS platform integrates scheduling, pilot tools, payment systems, and a consumer-facing ride-hailing app. Developed internally to address the shortcomings of traditional airline systems, it was built from the ground up for non-stop, flexible air taxi logistics. Unlike conventional systems tailored to fixed routes, this platform is optimized for high-volume, app-based mobility—much like ride-sharing, but for the skies.
Smartphone App to Hail Flights Passengers will eventually be able to summon electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft through a mobile app. Internal testing has already taken place, with employees booking seats via the software on fixed-wing aircraft. This intuitive interface brings a luxury transportation experience to the fingertips of users, combining instant access with tailored urban aerial routes.
Streamlined Pilot Training in Progress The air taxi firm has also created an accelerated training course, allowing qualified commercial pilots to transition into eVTOL aircraft operations within a matter of weeks. Work is underway to build certified full-motion flight simulators in collaboration with an international training provider. To ensure future growth, the company is developing a certified pilot school aimed at producing new aviators capable of meeting the 500-hour minimum flight requirement for this emerging fleet. | | | | Airbus Helicopters Presses Pause on UAM Development Amid Battery Concerns | | | | Airbus Helicopters is temporarily halting its CityAirbus NextGen program after flight testing is completed, despite ongoing confidence in the future of urban air mobility (UAM) vehicles.
Battery Performance Delays Launch The CityAirbus NextGen project was designed to be a battery-powered UAM vehicle with a range of 45 nautical miles and a cruising speed of 65 knots. However, concerns over battery performance, both current and projected, led to the decision to pause the development. The company recognizes that the technology is not yet ready for commercial operations.
Long-Term Vision for Urban Air Mobility Despite the setback, the company remains optimistic about the potential for UAM vehicles, particularly for reducing noise, increasing safety, and cutting CO2 emissions. However, the market for such vehicles is not expected to materialize in the short term. The necessary conditions for launching a fully operational program are not yet in place, as current battery technology cannot meet the required performance standards for mission success.
CityAirbus NextGen Design Still Valid The CityAirbus NextGen, which uses a lift-and-cruise design with fixed rotors, is still performing as expected in testing. The vehicle is intended for short missions, carrying four passengers and a pilot. While the battery limitations have delayed the program, the design itself continues to meet the expected performance standards.
Challenges Beyond Battery Technology In addition to technical constraints, regulatory hurdles and an immature business model are further obstacles to the launch of a new UAM program. The company plans to continue with regular test flights, focusing on endurance trials and additional testing points. |
