ACE AWARDS SUCCESS
Some 200 guests applauded the winners of our inaugural ACE Awards (including Curtain Call's Lou Ursone, pictured right with James Naughton) at Norwalk's Shore and Country Club, May 19. Former SEC chair, Arthur Levitt, surprised many by his trenchant criticism of the lack of support for the arts and his admonition to "Go to shows, buy art, listen to music, tell your friends to do the same, and get involved in arts institutions with leadership and philanthropy." CONNECTICUT LEAGUE OF HISTORY ORGANIZATIONS

For over 50 years, the Connecticut League of History Organizations (CLHO) has strengthened and sustained its member organizations by sharing knowledge and experience, and promoting best practices among the museums, historical societies and all others who steward Connecticut’s heritage collections. Programs and services include an Annual Conference (June 6, 2016), and StEPs-CT. StEPs-CT is a two-year professional development program for smaller cultural organizations, created with Connecticut Humanities, in partnership with the Connecticut Historical Society, based on the "Standards and Excellence Program for History Organizations" (StEPs), developed by the American Association for State and Local History. CLHO also makes Awards of Merit to institutions and individuals who, demonstrating the highest professional standards, further the understanding of Connecticut history, in four categories: Project, Publication, Educational Program and Individual Achievement. The 2016 awards (to be presented June 6) include our own Fairfield Museum and History Center. New this year are CLHO's Colleague Circles, developed with specific interest groups in mind and to focus on topics and issues of interest to particular groups. See CLHO's website, Facebook page
THE PINK RHUBARB

Founder and Director: Jane Mossa

The Pink Rhubarb is a new organization celebrating the people, resources and ideas that help grow food, make food and teach us the art of using our hands. Offering resources and programs in cooking, gardening and crafts, promoting healthy, creative living, The Pink Rhubarb is a “culinary journal” that explores food, edible education, gardening and creativity for children and adults of all ages. Founded by Jane Mossa, a food consultant, culinary arts graduate, chef, stylist and gardener, who is passionate about the farm-to-table community, its lifestyle, products and makers, The Pink Rhubarb is the realization of her lifelong dream to teach cooking, gardening and the art of craft. Delighted to share her ideas and inspiration, Jane writes that "Garden-to-Plate is all about teaching future generations how to enjoy using their hands: in the kitchen, garden or at the table. It is an essential life-skill to be used and shared over a lifetime." The Pink Rhubarb offers classes, camps and workshops for all ages and its digital pages feature a variety of topics from container gardening, cooking and nutrition, to sustainable living and simple crafts. THE BALLET SCHOOL OF STAMFORD is very proud that one of its star graduates, Claudia Schreier ('04) returns to present her 2013 work Harmonic, winner of the 2014 Breaking Glass The Emerging Female Choreo-graphers Project competition, (performed with guest artists from Dance Theatre of Harlem and The Suzanne Farrell Ballet) in a program this Friday May 27, together with Sleeping Beauty. Act 2 of Sleeping Beauty is choreo-graphed by new CAFC member Meghan Bonneau McCool.
The BARNUM MUSEUM hosted a successful WWI Digitization Day Tuesday May 24. As part of Remembering World War One: Sharing History/Preserving Memories the Connecticut State Library is gathering WWI keepsakes at digitization events throughout the state. At the Barnum, eight donors shared artifacts and stories of ten soldiers, most from the Bridgeport area. 28 images and many stories were captured. At left Edward Schafer, a cook and prolific writer, who shared many stories about his war experiences. Click here.
The COASTAL ARTS GUILD OF CT was pleased to find and now to introduce Alec Lessard, its new marketing intern. Alec lives in Shelton, and has just graduated with a degree in advertising from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. His specialties are design and strategy both of which he will be employing with the Guild over the summer. Read more...
FAIRFIELD MUSEUM celebrates People’s United Bank as sponsor of its Family Focus series. Programs presented on school holidays and vacation days by the Museum’s Education Team, connecting history, the arts and community are now offered free-of-charge because of the Bank's generosity. "This sponsorship offers free, enriching programs - storytelling, crafts, lectures and educational activities - and is a rewarding partnership for everyone involved," said Director Michael Jehle.
Congratulations FAIRFIELD THEATRE COMPANY (FTC) for receiving the Business Owner of the Year Award from CT Main Street Center - the first nonprofit so to be honored. CT Main Street Center's Associate Director commented that "not only is the business model and entrepreneurial approach examined and considered, but also the impact of an award-worthy business owner on the whole of the downtown – which is critical to the jury’s selection in this category.” FTC will be among five award recipients at a celebration in Storrs, CT on Monday, June 6. NEW PARADIGM THEATRE (NPT) just brought an up-and-coming young designer onto Channel 8 and Channel 12 (his first TV appearance). Vaughn Sims is a University of Bridgeport Fashion Design student who came to the attention of NPT founder Kristin Huffman through NPT's work with the Bridgeport Council of Churches. Vaughn will present his fashion line, developed out of trash and recycled items for NPT's Trash to Treasure fundraiser (June 4th at the Fairfield Circle Inn) to benefit NPT's scholarship fund.
PROJECT MUSIC is celebrating the final days of its second season, with more than 100 inner-city students (compared to 55 last season) seeing their worlds expand and their music and life skills multiply as they are immersed in serious music education four days a week, after school at Chester Addison Community Center. K–6 students are self-identifying as musicians and performers, engaging in frequent public performances at Loft Artists Association, 9th Note, Waterside Park, DOMUS gala, Treetops, and a culminating King School concert after a 3-day residency with Baltimore Symphony’s OrchKids and BRAVO Waterbury!’s El Sistema programs. The First RIDGEFIELD INDEPENDENT FILM FEST (RIFF) wrapped up Sunday, May 22 with the RIFF Awards being presented in a ceremony at the Keeler Tavern Museum. Girl In The Chair by M. Louis Gordon (who grew up in Ridgefield) won Best of Fest at the RIFF Awards. Other local prizewinners include Ridgefielders Joseph Lipstein (R.I.P The Big E's) and  and Greg Condon (Beat & After Beat). SUZUKI MUSIC SCHOOL OF WESTPORT is excited to be moving into new facilities in the heart of downtown Westport at 246 Post Road East (just east of Imperial Ave). The school is refurbishing the property to give it 7,000 sq ft for the music school, an 85-seat recital hall, and gallery space. The school is working with the Westport Library, Senior Center and other partners to develop programming and to ensure the space will be used by the community for concerts, lectures, and community events. Ribbon cutting scheduled for Sept. 24.

TURNAROUND ARTS SCHOOLS GET SOLID SUPPORT

The five-year-old Turnaround Arts Schools have secured support to guarantee the program's future. This project to expand arts education in elementary and middle schools has found new, long-term backing. The President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities (PCAH) and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will partner to keep the Turnaround Arts initiative funded and expanding next year. The program brings music, drama, dance and visual arts into struggling schools. It’s grown from eight to 68 schools since it began in 2012. The Kennedy Center’s executive director, Deborah Rutter, says the new arrangement will broaden its reach and secure its support. First lady Michelle Obama announced the partnership Wednesday at the White House Talent Show featuring Turnaround Arts students and celebrities. At the first White House Talent Show, in 2014, President Obama said: "The arts are central to who we are as a people, and they are central to the success of our kids. This is not an afterthought." Students from Turnaround Arts schools nationwide, including from the five Bridgeport schools in the program, performed for First Lady Michelle Obama, their peers, and artist mentors at the White House. Turnaround Artist mentors included Keb' Mo', Tim Robbins, Bernie Williams, Damian Woetzel, Charles "Lil Buck" Riley, Paula Fuga, Irvin Mayfield, and more. Research following the pilot 2012 Turnaround Arts program showed an average 12.6% improvement in reading proficiency and 22.5% improvement in math proficiency. The new Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which President Obama signed into law in December 2015, provides funding and guidance to include the arts and music as part of a "well-rounded" education. "All struggling schools, through ESSA, have the opportunity to put the arts back into education and transform their schools,” said Mary Schmidt Campbell, PCAH Vice Chair. Save the Date for a June Bridgeport Turnaround Arts Fundraiser at Housatonic Community College. Bernie Williams and students will perform the song they sang at the White House and there will be a silent auction of items from some of the Turnaround Artists.
KRESGE FOUNDATION'S FRESHLO MENU: 
FOOD, ARTS + CULTURE

A new approach, connecting cultural expression, food and health has just been launched by The Kresge Foundation. It has made grants totaling $2 million to 26 organizations across the country to develop food-oriented initiatives in cities across the nation. FreshLo – for "Fresh, Local & Equitable: Food as a Creative Platform for Neighborhood Revitalization" is a joint effort by Kresge’s Arts & Culture and Health programs. Nonprofits and coalitions receive $75,000 planning awards through FreshLo to design neighborhood-scale projects demonstrating creative, cross-sector visions of food-oriented development. Kresge is the first national funder to intentionally and equitably integrate food, art and community to drive neighborhood revitalization at this scale.  "Food and cultural expression are inextricably tied together, and have been throughout history. FreshLo seeks to use that relationship to help local organizations build creative and invigorating pathways to better health and opportunity in urban low-income neighborhoods," said Stacey Barbas, senior program officer with Kresge’s Health Program. More than 500 organizations applied for FreshLo funding – the most applicants for a funding opportunity in The Kresge Foundation’s 92-year history. The overwhelming response resulted in the Foundation funding six more grants than initially planned. Barbers said she expected that this would be the vanguard of a new movement to put a modern spin on the ancient tradition of "using food to express community, social cohesion, artistic flair and cultural identity." FreshLo embodies The Kresge Foundation’s philosophy that catalytic change to improve opportunity for low-income persons in America’s cities requires a multi-layered approach – not simply one program or sector working alone. By avoiding prescriptive solutions, Kresge has intentionally sought to encourage an expansive, unique and creative suite of proposals through the FreshLo initiative. The grants will support project management, partnership development, community engagement, strategic communications, policy development and other activities directly related to successful outcomes. NEWS FROM THE OFFICE OF THE ARTS
1. FAREWELL TO JOHN CUSANO
The Office of the Arts bids farewell to John Cusano, who has been Community Development Coordinator for the past 11 years. John is a much beloved and respected staff member of the COA, crisscrossing the state to stimulate, advise and connect the arts organizations scattered across its 169 towns. Working in collaboration with the state’s field of local arts agencies, John was responsible for helping to establish the network of now nine Designated Regional Service Organizations (DRSOs), of which the CAFC is one. He was instrumental in re-organizing and managing the Peer Advisor Network and was the chief instigator of the Regional Initiative Grant. His last day is May 31. He will be sorely missed.

2. STRATEGIC PLANNING UPDATE
The COA has just completed the last in its series of 11 charrettes across the state, under the direction of Public City, gathering ideas, and opinions about the role of the arts and the role of the Office in stimulating and promoting the arts in Connecticut. The material from the charrettes will be used by the Office, working with Public City, in building its next five-year statewide Arts & Cultural Strategy Plan. Your own personal input is still requested. You have until May 31 to respond to this simple 3-question survey or to weigh in on social media using #CTArts on COA's Facebook page and Twitter feed

GRAMMY FOUNDATION
MUSIC RESEARCH AND PRESERVATION
OCTOBER 1

Funded by the Recording Academy, the Grammy Foundation's grant program provides support for music archiving and preservation efforts and for scientific research projects related to the impact of music on the human condition. The scientific research projects grant program awards funding of up to $20,000 to organizations and individuals working to research the impact of music on the human condition (such as the study of the effects of music on mood, cognition, and healing; the medical and occupational well-being of music professionals; and the creative process underlying music). The archiving and preservation projects grant program awards grants to organizations and individuals in support of efforts that advance the archiving and preservation of the music and recorded sound heritage of the Americas. The archiving and preservation area has two funding categories — preservation implementation (grants of up to $20,000) and planning, assessment and/or consultation (grants of up to $5,000). Letters of Inquiry must be received no later than October 1, 2016. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.

PLANNING GUIDE FOR BOARD MEETINGS

Joan Garry, Principal at Joan Garry Consulting ("widely known as the Dear Abby of nonprofit leadership") writes in her blog on the value of planning board meetings way ahead: think of board meetings in terms of cycles - and plan accordingly. In her very approachable piece, Planning Guide for Board Meetings she explains the value of planning cyclically and of having a chart, such as the downloadable one above, to help you plan. As ED of GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) she would think about her four quarterly meetings as a group, tying milestone dates to the organization's annual goals. Staff would build work plans around those dates so the board could get all the information it needed to make key decisions for those particular dates. She advises representing the cycle of the year (budget approval; audit; quarterly reports; goal review; work-plan; some professional development; the Big Event planning) onto such a visual, where you can give your board a sense of where each board meeting fits into the larger context of the year. "If you reviewed that planning document each December, you could actually anticipate topics and give folks a fair amount of heads up if they were presenting!...You could even give folks a reasonable amount of time to write a board report and get it to the board so they could actually have sufficient time to read it!" NEW ENGLAND CREATIVE ECONOMY NETWORK MEETING
ARTS RESEARCH
JUNE 17

The New England Creative Economy Network connects creative community leaders from around the region to discuss New England creative economy models, priorities, and strategies. The goals of the network are to: formalize and increase connections among practitioners; spotlight creative economy projects; share resources across communities; brainstorm on New England priorities and strategies. The next meeting will be held at the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA)'s offices in Boston, just before the opening of the Americans for the Arts conference, on June 17, 8:30-11:30 am.  The focus of this meeting will be on arts research. NEFA will be gathering input on the creative economy research definition and survey methodology for its upcoming New England Creative Economy Employment Report and Artist Survey.  The meeting will be facilitated by researchers from the Economic and Public Policy Research group at the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute. The INTAKE Organization (Instrumentally Native Taking on the Classics) is a youth development and arts education organization, founded in 2011 to improve the quality of life for underserved children, largely from immigrant families, by providing access to quality classical music education through the use of native instruments that represent the community’s diverse cultural backgrounds. INTAKE seeks an office manager professional to be responsible for the full range of administrative tasks within the organization to help ensure the smooth functioning of the internal and external system of the organization. The Office Manager plays a central role in the development and coordination of INTAKE’s programmatic activities, including the ongoing Native Instrument Academy and community development initiatives. Responsibilities may include: support services in expense tracking and book keeping; monitoring email correspondences and meeting follow-ups; assist with event and calendar year planning; administering the organization's online contact databases, pupil records/enrollment, master contracts and insurance policy renewals; assist with coordinating instructor/class schedules. The right candidate will have a Bachelors degree, preferably with a finance background, strong organizational and communication skills. Experience of nonprofits and/or education and being bilingual (Spanish language) would be a plus. The hourly rate, for this approximately 20-hours/week position is $15-$20/hour; negotiable, based on experience. YALE SCHOOL OF DRAMA
PROPERTIES ASSISTANT

The Yale School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theatre (YSD/YRT) seeks a highly motivated and positive individual to join our staff as long term seasonal Properties Assistant. Responsibilities include assisting in providing props, furniture and set dressing for YRT productions, while maintaining high standards for safety and craftsmanship. This position works closely with the Properties Master and Properties Craftsman, as well as advises and oversees student workers. Ideal candidates have professional and/or college-level experience in general carpentry and use of shop tools; and assembling, altering, and repairing furniture, props, and set dressings. Knowledge of Photoshop, Excel, and Word required. Must be able to shop effectively, and track and log receipts. Preferred experience: AutoCAD, CNC routers or laser cutters, mold making and body casting, upholstery and soft goods construction, welding and metal working, as well as budgeting and bookkeeping experience in a professional setting. Minimum salary is $21.87/hr, plus Yale University benefits package. Opportunity to audit MFA level courses while expanding professional resume credits. CONTRACT GRANTS COORDINATOR


The Connecticut Historical Society seeks an independent, part-time Contractor to assist the organization by providing grant program coordination and grant writing services. Contractor should be prepared to test and demonstrate ROI for each project and overall function. The Contract Grants Coordinator is responsible for organizing and coordinating all aspects of grant funding for the Connecticut Historical Society (CHS). COASTAL ARTS GUILD OF CT 
ART TEACHERS

The Coastal Arts Guild of CT invites you to teach art classes with them. Arts and creativity teachers may submit their suggestions of classes they would like to teach, in conjunction with the Guild. Teaching art classes through the Guild, gives you the following support: The Guild's marketing and design team to create materials and promote the class; The Guild's mailing list; its social media outlets; its volunteers, who support your class onsite; a photographer to record the class; a strategic plan for number of students, cost of materials, event planning and location; and a percentage of the net earnings. The Guild is actively looking for art teachers, including master-class instructors, in clay, watercolor, fiber, anime, oil painting, figure drawing, fiction writing, theatrical arts, and more. WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY

P/T PROGRAM COORDINATORR

Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts (CFA) supports the technical and production needs of the departments of dance, music, theater and art and art history, student groups and University departments, and serves as a cultural center for the campus, Middletown and the region. The CFA seeks a part-time Program Coordinator, reporting to the Assistant Director for Programs. This position supports arts programming of the departments of Dance, Music, Theater and Art and Art History. The Program Coordinator also works closely with ICPP and the Zilkha Gallery to advance logistics of associated events, such as talks, receptions, and panels. The Program Coordinator will assist with other programs and events as needed. This is a part time position (.76) that works approximately 28 hours per week over 52 weeks per year. The Lyman Allyn Art Museum, an AAM-accredited institution serving New London and Southeastern Connecticut as a vibrant museum and cultural arts center, seeks an experienced Director of Education for a permanent, full-time (Tuesdays through Saturdays) salaried position. Reporting to the Museum Director this senior staff member will implement excellent and comprehensive programs to further the core mission and stature of the Museum.
