“Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.” Colossians 3:1 NASB From the moment we make our profession to accept and follow our Lord Jesus, we’re all on a ‘milk bottle’ level of understanding faith. None of my academic credentials have any part in my growing and learning experiences of walking by faith, neither is trusting in my fleshly reasoning. I think back over those many years of my Civil Service career, and all the many hats I wore with regard to my responsibilities. Unlike my career successes, my faith was not something I manufactured or manipulated in my own power. The Bible declares faith is given to us from God above, (Romans 12:3). Our trusting God is best understood by what John the Baptist tells us: “He (God) must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30). But how do we best do that? How do we learn to let go of all our human reasoning, so that God’s preeminence reigns? I have learned over the years, what God is telling me with regarding ‘keep seeking those things which are above’…and ‘letting go of my ‘old self’ was to determine areas where I was not wanting God to be preeminent in my life – where I instead wanted to serve myself. For sure, we’re all challenged daily, learning to ‘let go.’ It’s determined individually how we’ll succeed as we search out our own hearts (Psalms 139:23-24). Answering the title question, ‘What does it mean to be raised with Christ? In Colossians 3:2 the Apostle Paul gives the best answer; it’s learning to ‘set my mind on things above,’ which is to ask myself, what in my life does not bring God honor? — then following up on the exhortation in Colossians 3:23 which proclaims … ‘Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men.’ Thank You Father.
