“Who perceives his unintentional sins? Cleanse me from my hidden faults. Moreover; keep your servant from willful sins; do not let them rule me. Then I will be blameless and cleansed from blatant rebellion. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer,” (Psalm 19:12-14 CSB).
This passage swings from one end of the spectrum to the other: from the acknowledgment of ‘hidden faults,’ to the possibility of committing willful ‘blatant rebellion’ against the Lord. It shows clearly how the psalmist David, a ‘man after God’s own heart’ didn’t want to live in ignorance of his hidden sins, nor did he want to drift toward any blatant sin, or assume the false notion he could live however selfishly he pleased, and still consider himself right with God. That would be the height of presumption.
How seriously do we take our own sins when life’s little aggravations upset the ‘old nature’ and we lash out in small ways and big? Yes, we still have to deal with the ‘old man’ who keeps trying to resurrect himself. How does he do this? By making us ‘forget we were purged from our old sins’ (cf. 2 Peter 1:9 CSB) while we momentarily place ourselves under the power of the flesh and consequently out from under the divine power of Christ who “According as His divine power has given us all things that pertain unto life and godliness…” (cf. 2 Peter 1:3 NKJV).
As Christian believers we know we are justified by faith alone in Christ alone, (Ephesians 2:8-9 CSB). We also know our faith perseveres in Christ alone, so that “…we are not those who draw back and are destroyed, but those who have faith and are saved,” (Hebrews 10:39 CSB). For this, we don’t throw caution to the wind and live as we please; we see the gravity of the cross, we examine our faith – and like David, we call upon God to deliver us from ourselves.
