“We love him, because he first loved us,” (1 John 4:19 KJV).
I still belong to a prayer chain from a church I attended years ago. Today, an old friend from that church posted a request on the chain — a friend who’s been trying to win family members to Christ for years. In the request, she wrote, “pray for me as I continue to love my family to the Lord”.
Her simple request made me pause and read it over. The words ‘Love them to the Lord’ were so packed with truth. It reminds me how we can get so caught up in trying to win people, or trying to lead people, or trying to convince people to turn to Christ, that we simply forget Christ’s command to love people. How often instead of loving, we get anxious or doubtful and afraid of what to say. We make it all about us and our success or failure to ‘bring people to Christ’, by becoming overly anxious or discouraged about how our witness is going or how it’s measuring up. Perhaps we just need to trust the Spirit and remember that Jesus wins, Jesus leads, and Jesus convinces people through His loving Spirit shining through us — not only through our words but through our actions. It might mean taking the time to pray with someone or for someone in faith, or sending them a card, or writing a letter, or developing a friendship, or paying a visit, or providing some kind of material need as the Lord directs.
God help us not be anxious when it comes to our witness, but simply rest in You — determining to love our friends and family to the Lord in Jesus Name.
