Light in the Darkness – by Harriett Ford

For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his beloved Son, Col. 1:13 ESV

As a child, I never let my foot or hand hang over the edge of the bed at night. What monster might lurk underneath? It seems children instinctively know there is a kingdom of darkness. The first thing God does in Genesis is to dispel the darkness upon the face of the deep. Darkness is defined as the absence of light. Yet God did not create the sun until the fourth day (Genesis 1:14-19)? Where did that light come from?

Could it be that Jesus, the Light of the world, overcame the darkness on those first three days to establish a pattern of victory, declaring the end from the beginning? Egypt experienced a plague of total darkness for three days and no one could see anyone else or move about. Yet the Hebrews still had light in the places where they lived, (Ex. 10-21-23). Victory.

When Jesus hung on the cross, darkness covered the earth for three hours (Mat. 27:45). The Light of the world went out. During that unnatural darkness, Satan must have thought he had won the victory (I Cor. 2:8). Wrong. He was defeated.

I once walked through a dark night of the soul. It seemed the sun's light had been extinguished from my world. I could not see beyond disappointment, disease, and defeat. Then I heard a quiet whisper, “You don't need the sun's light to find your way. You only need the Light of the world.”

His word is a light unto my path. No matter how deep the darkness, His word renews my hope and allows me to walk by faith and not by sight. Victory.
