How “Personal” Can You Get? – by Florence Simmons

“Where can I go from your Spirit? If I go up to heaven, you are there…If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me…[and] will hold me fast” (Psalm 139:7-10).

Have you ever thought that God was far from you, somewhere way up in the heavens, and that He wasn’t concerned with only one small insignificant person?

The Psalmist David gives us an amazing view of his God. He describes Him as knowing everything about David – when he sits and arises, even his thoughts. God knows David even better than David knows himself. David admits, “Before a word is on my tongue, you know it completely, O Lord” (verse 4). Now that is getting pretty personal when God knows what you are going to say before you speak. Many times we ourselves don’t even know.

In verses 7-12, David describes God as seeing all: “If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on wings of the dawn…even there your hand shall guide me… [and] will hold me fast.”

David is convinced his God is everywhere he goes and in everything he does. This highly personal touch might make a person a little squeamish about God’s eyesight. You might ask, does He even see me in the shower? No fear. David’s God is your God. He knows all about you. He will hold you fast. He is your personal God.
