Wild Horses - by Sheldon Bass

“Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.” (Psalm 32:9 NIV)

At age 17 the Lord was preparing me to understand my own heart. As I stood enthralled by a herd of wild horses ranging over beautiful rolling hills, the sun painting colors on the horizon, God had my attention. It would be many years until the full meaning of that wonderful experience would be made known. The horses represented me; free, untamed, uncontrollable, and not yet fit for service.

I later discovered that fear of losing my freedom was unfounded. The Lord didn’t want to control me, He wanted me to control myself and follow Him (Galatians 5:23).He wanted me to come freely to Him, because of His great love, displayed through Christ on Calvary. He wanted me to seek His wise counsel, and accept His direction.

Yet like those wild horses, my spirit had to be broken and my heart crushed before I could accept His wisdom and be trained in the ways of righteousness. Accepting God’s will is quite liberating from sin and error, and I had perpetrated many blunders. In verse 8 God says: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” God is wise, faithful and trustworthy; we can trust Him with our lives.
