“What if” Indeed - by Judy Sheer Watters

“May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.” (1 Thessalonians 3:13 NIV)

This is not the first time I have heard this “what if.” However, yesterday when I read a devotional by Colin Swann, this unfathomable concept struck home with me. What if Jesus came to visit today and just wanted to “hang out”? That idea alone jars me to the core, as I have never envisioned “hanging out” with the King of Kings, the Prince of Peace. But I look at my daily plans.

If Jesus knocked on my door on Monday, would I invite Him to attend my Toastmasters meeting? On Tuesday, would I rush Him into the car to make it to my three different writers’ groups? Obviously, on Wednesday, I would take Him to Bible Study. On Thursday, would I take Him to visit my sister and our 92-year-old Mom for the day? With Jesus sitting there over coffee and English Muffins, I believe the three of us would be strangely silent for once and sit in awe of His majesty. If this visit came on Friday, would we insist He go to the football game with us?

Perhaps if Jesus came on any day, I might forego all my commitments and selfishly bask in His glory alone, so tempting. As Colin Swann says, “Today would be memorable.” Memorable indeed.

Lord Jesus, May I be attentive everyday as You walk hand-in-hand with me.
