I have struggled with anxiety since I was thirteen. As an adult, I’ve sometimes felt as if life is like walking through a minefield: you never know when something is going to blow up in your face.
But this is not the perspective God wants us to take. He is eternal, all-powerful, loving, just, and sovereign. In his wisdom, he “knows the end from the beginning.” So rather than expecting bad things from life and becoming fearful, cynical, or negative, the Lord wants us to expect good things from him, to have faith in his power, love, and blessings. He asks us to choose to look at situations from the perspective of that faith and from the standpoint of those who are his beloved children filled with the presence and power of his Holy Spirit.
This means we can wake up every morning with great expectations of the good that God has in store for us, rejoicing in him and in the day he has made. Psalms 118:24 Of course, this doesn’t mean everything we experience is sunshine and roses. Great pain, injustice, and trials will come, sometimes without warning. But God invites us to bring every concern and need to him with requests bathed in thanksgiving. His promise is that we will then have his indescribable peace to protect our hearts and minds from fear and despair. Philippians 4:6-7 We can also ask God to open our eyes to his blessings, his guidance, provision, comfort, and strengthening power in the middle of those hard times. And we can trust him to bring good even from those things our enemy meant for evil. We can then say with the psalmist, “Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” Psalm 27:13-14.
Now those are great expectations.
