Fear Of Missing Out – Toni M. Babcock
Do you or anyone you know suffer from social media FOMO? I’m talking about ‘Fear Of Missing Out’. It attaches itself to another fear called FOGS – Fear Of Getting Started. If I have any reluctance at all about getting started doing anything (like writing a short article like this) FOMO is the perfect strategy to put it off. The key is to keep scrolling down on my timeline and newsfeeds so I don’t miss any adorable animal videos, bombshell political headlines, hysterical memes, or pious platitudes to live by. I can’t forget to comment or click ‘like’ on my favorite posts – it’s so rewarding!
A lot of us can relate to this obsession. The fact is it’s hard to reconcile how fast the hands on the clock spin around while we’re glued to our phones or computers. Finally, we realize ‘Yikes! I’ve been scrolling for nearly an hour! Whaaat?’ Honestly, when was the last time we entertained our Bibles with that much rapt attention?
The Bible is where we gain wisdom and understanding. It makes us think slowly and methodically, comparing scripture with scripture. It requires us to ponder, meditate, and dig deep to discover its truths. It doesn’t grab our attention with clickbait and the opportunity to generate likes. Yet, God’s Word rewards us with so much more.
Beginning right now, let’s generate some ‘Fear Of Missing Out’ of what God has to say in His Word. Let’s seek His wisdom and delight ourselves in Him. We’ll become much better servants of the Lord, and witnesses to His mighty deeds.
“Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.” (Proverbs 4:5-6 KJV)
