The End of Ourselves – by Susan Ferguson The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18 NIV) It’s been said that the human will is much like that of a wild horse, naturally stubborn, and insistent on its way. But when a horse is broken, it obeys the commands of the rider and is deemed valuable. As Christians, we have to be broken so we can be yielded vessels for God’s use and glory. Through brokenness, we can learn obedience and be molded into the likeness of Christ. Anything that brings us to the end of ourselves – failure, heartache, sickness, sorrow, financial crisis – can cause brokenness. When we come to the end of our strength, abilities, and resources, then we can turn to God in full surrender. Why is it so difficult to surrender to God? Our human inclination is to manage our own lives and do what we want to do. God never forces our will into submission but waits for us to yield willingly. When we surrender to God, the conflict of wills ends and our restless hearts find peace. When we let go and let God have control, He can work through us and make something beautiful out of our lives.
