The Tornado - Ken Ebright
“Lord, my Rock, I call out to you for help. Do not be deaf to me. If you are silent,
I will be like those in the grave.” Psalm 28:1 (NCV)
“Lord, what are you doing, don’t you care about me?” That is what I screamed one day as I drove home frustrated from work as a courier in Belleville, Illinois. I did not move from Minnesota to drive around the St Louis area like a chicken with my head cut off, I thought. The career job that was supposed to be, didn’t work out. I felt like the Lord had let me down.
As I arrived home, a good-sized storm rolled in, so I checked the local weather forecast on TV. But as the noise outside grew louder, I sprinted back to the door to see what was happening. At one point, it looked so windy I thought a hurricane had struck our area.
Then a neighbor came home, “Look, what happened!” He pointed to the roof of a nearby apartment building that was gone. Remembering, my disappointment and rant a few hours earlier, I felt like the Lord was reminding me, but for His grace that could have been my house.
In our opening Psalm 28:1, David was being chased by Saul and probably felt like God didn’t care about him at that moment. But we all know that is not true.
I found out later a Tornado had struck that nearby roof. I had thought that the Lord went deaf to me, but He protected me, remaining faithful even when my faith was weak.
If we trust Jesus, no matter what happens, even if we do lose our home, He’ll keep us safe.
